This is a sagittal image of the right limb of the pancreas in a 6 year old canine mix. The pancreas is dorsal to the descending duodenum.
What is your diagnosis?
Pancreatic edema
The anechoic “stripes” represent fluid between pancreatic lobules. Pancreatic edema is often present with acute pancreatitis, but can also be seen with hypoproteinemia and portal hypertension.

Echo Image of the Month
This is a right parasternal long axis inflow outflow view in a cat. The arrow is pointing at SAM - systolic anterior mitral valve motion. Although SAM is associated with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy there are other things to consider.
Answer these questions:
1. Does SAM always mean outflow obstruction?
Yes
2. Is HOCM the only disease SAM is seen in?
No
3. In what other situations can we see SAM?
Systolic anterior motion is a significant finding in patients with right-sided heart disease, volume contraction, and hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy.This phenomenon often indicates some degree of obstruction to blood flow, with potential causes including the Venturi effect, improper papillary muscle alignment, and mitral dysplasia. Understanding SAM is crucial for effective diagnosis and management of related cardiac conditions.

The objective of this program is for the attendee to become a proficient, confident soft tissue sonographer, by immersing them in soft tissue ultrasound over a 3 month period. The student will be with us for 4 days in session 1, and 3 days in sessions 2 and 3.
Each session is approximately 1 month apart. Each session will build upon the prior session.
Knobs, measurements, labeling, scan technique of the abdomen, scanning protocol, artifacts, normal and abnormals, disease processes, and aspirate and biopsy technique will be taught.
