Prince LOVES my socks. Today he was allowed some free time and found a pair of socks. Here’s how I handled it:

I kept my distance, said, “Yay! You found my socks!” and walked to the kitchen away from him. He dropped the socks to follow. I tossed a small handful of treats onto the cot. As he ate those I went and picked up the socks and put them away.

Not all dogs willingly drop the socks (or whatever). In that case your effort to prevent must be higher to avoid the situation altogether as you work on it.

Lots of dogs learn to play keep away and catch-me-if-you-can games because they’ve learned their people will chase them when they get something.

Never chase your dog!

If your dog has a habit of getting things they shouldn’t then engaging you to chase them you need to prevent this. Put your things away. No longer allow this much freedom by leashing your dog, supervising closely and confining them when you can’t watch them.

Teach them to trade and drop.

But most importantly:

🛑STOP TRYING TO TAKE THINGS AWAY FROM YOUR DOG.

As a mobile practitioner some things, like dental procedures and x rays, I need to refer to trusted local brick and mortar clinics. I'm excited that in addition to dogs and cats, I can also soon refer exotics patients (birds, reptiles, rabbits, etc.) to see the new doctor joining the team at Village Animal Clinic. Congratulations to Dr Hughes on starting her new job with the talented people at Village!
