Tuff Start Rescue

Tuff Start Rescue We rescue those facing euthanasia due to health problems, financial constraints or abandonment. Tuff Start Rescue was started in 2011.

We rescue dogs and cats that would otherwise be euthanized due to full pounds, health problems, financial constraints, or just for being a stray or feral (cat). We are a nonprofit organization and rely soley on donations to care for these animals and to give them a second chance at the life they deserve!

These two TSR Alumni kitties had been in the home where their poor Dad had passed away, naturally, several days to 2 weeks before anyone knew. 💔

Mousey (2020 Alum) was captured on Day 2 and appears completely unscathed, with the exception of not being able to get enough attention. ❤️

Cody (2017 Alum) was finally captured on Day 5, after evading all of our prior efforts, including traps full of our best offerings (tuna, sardines, rotisserie chicken, treats, catnip, etc). We resorted to thermal and snake cameras which allowed us to confirm his brilliant hiding spot, lined with his fur, and ending up sawing through the bathtub to expose his spot. Of course, the loud noise likely spooked him as we saw him scurry into a bedroom. He was finally captured when he ran into a closet and surrendered with his head down. We will never forget the sadness wefelt seeing him like this. He is still pretty shutdown, but is coming around, sits well for his fluids, has been eating and just started talking a bit (he has THE best little cry and facial expression when he talks). We will love him through this, just like we did when he was originally rescued almost 10 years ago.

UPDATE: 🥰
Both kitties are doing very well and are settled into their routinesback to Jackie's house to be in our "Forever Foster" program, as she was their original foster Momma. ❤️

Cody recently had a dental cleaning and a small mass removed by his eye. They are both doing great and happy little kiddos again!

Pete came to us as a tiny 2-pound kitten with some BIG medical issues. Thanks to a CT scan, we were able to get the facts on our little man. Pete was diagnosed with 2 congenital issues:

- PRAA (Persistent Right Aortic Arch) which is abnormal tissue that traps the esophagus, preventing normal passage of food, causing regurgitation.

- PSS (liver shunt), which is an abnormal connection of a blood vessel, bypassing the liver, resulting in seizures and disorientation.

Because Pete was/is not clinical for his PRAA, we proceeded with his liver shunt surgery first. He recovered like a trooper and has been doing great! He was able to come off all of his medications too! His doctors don't know if he'll ever become clinical for his PRAA, but he is currently well-managed with a strict canned food diet.

Over the past year, we have taken in 15 cats from a local colony, living outside an elderly couple's home. Many of the cats were undersocialized, young adult cats (approx 1 year old) and have needed a great deal of time and space to adjust. Thankfully, they are making great strides in their loving foster environments and 9 of the 15 have been adopted into loving forever homes! The remaing 6 are still adjusting, while waiting for their special someone!

Fannie, Marmalade, Caviar, Waffles, Carlita, Zorro, Carmel, Presley, Earl, Carlos, Carl K, Priscilla, Grayson, Carlotta, Gilbert Fluff.

Did you know over 20 of our rescue kiddos are on an expensive Rx and/or special diets?! This can make for an expensive “grocery run” but it is so essential for their continued care and health!
When you donate you allow us to continue to provide these important meals.

We wanted to make sure to honor the rescue kids we lost this year. Hope & Skinny Mike (aka Magic Mike). They were both a part of Tuff Start Rescue and living in our “Forever Foster” program. 🌈❤️

Edited to add: because we lost 2 other sweet souls (also in our Forever Fosters Group) at the end of 2023 (after last year's memorial post), we wanted to also include sweet Teensie and Sadie. 🩷🌈

Some of our special kiddos in our rescue are part of our 'Forever Fosters' group. This group is for those who, due mainly to medical and/or behavior issues, will always remain in our Tuff Start Rescue Family. This means they will live the rest of their lives with their loving foster families. 🩷

Donations to our beloved “Forever Fosters” help cover their costs each month (medical, food, litter, etc). We are so thankful for their dedicated foster families who know just how to spoil them so perfectly!

This sweet goofball came to us with a severe urinary blockage that required him to be hospitalized in the ER for 6 days! Once out of the hospital, we learned he had a urethral tear and needed a PU surgery (re-routing of his urethra so he urinates as a female cat). He still has issues with this from time to time, is prone to infections and while he leaks drops of urine frequently, we simply adore him and his zest for life! He is on a prescription diet and medications to help with his urinary issues.

Watson came to us as a very sick boy! He was severely hyperthyroid (which has since been treated thanks to a very generous donor), had a non healing wound (almost healed!) and severe hip dysplasia (he will be having surgery to correct this soon). He is such a sweet older boy and would love a home to call his own!

This little sweetie came to us, as an alternative to euthanasia when she was having urinary accidents after the family had brought kittens into the home. Tilly wants everyone to know that sometimes cats do not like kittens! She had a full work up (urine and blood testing, ultrasound, etc) and has no medical reasons for doing this. While she has been with us, she has not had a urinary accident. Tilly is looking for a loving foster or forever home.

Bonded sisters, Almond and Macadamia, were adopted from us as babies, then returned 4 years later due to no fault of their own. When they came back to us, they had full workups and we found bladder stones and crystalline debris (ouch!), so both girls now eat a prescription diet for urinary health. On recheck ultrasounds, both girls' bladders are now completely normal! They are looking for a long-term foster (or forever!) home.

He came to us when he was unable to walk, due to a gun shot that caused damage to his spinal cord. After a Neurology Consult + MRI, we learned that the bullet had irritated his spinal cord causing severe inflammation. Thankfully, they were hopeful he would walk again!

Approximately 6 months after his horrible trauma, our sweet boy can walk again! He still struggles with control going potty when standing (hard to squat, etc) but he is a walking miracle and oh so sweet!

He is on a special food to keep his GI tract regular and currently on 2 medications to help with inflammation. This sweet boy is looking for a loving foster home to help along his recovery journey.
