Horse Health
11-11-20 (US)

Horses need a balanced diet of high-quality hay, alfalfa, oats or grains, and vitamins and minerals. Whether you have a high-performance horse, a pregnant mare, foals, or a breeding stallion, tailor their diet to their purpose to keep them performing at their top level.

Introduction to Horse Feed and Supplements
Feeds provide animals with the protein, carbohydrates, fiber, vitamins, and minerals they need. Some feeds are designed to be the primary source of food for the animals, while other feeds are designed to provide animals that eat forage with the extra protein and energy they need to complete their diet.

Supplements provide animals with extra minerals, vitamins, and other compounds they may require to meet specific needs.

When an animal eats forage, it means the animal grazes on grass in a pasture or field or eats some kind of preserved forage such as hay, silage, or haylage.

Here are the elements of a basic horse diet.

Water for a Horse
Make fresh water available at all times. Water deficiency will get a horse into serious trouble faster than any other dietary problem. A horse's average water consumption is approximately 10 to 15 gallons per day. Working horses or lactating mares may consume as much as 30 gallons or more within a 24-hour period.

Horses competing in long-distance events should be allowed to drink as long as they are kept on the move. When the ride has been completed they should be cooled off before being allowed free access to water.

Bulk or Roughage
The preferred method of providing bulk to your horse is to offer pasture and/or hay 24 hours a day. If this isn't practical, supply a minimum of 1% equivalent of the horse's body weight in good quality roughage per day. Feed horses as often as possible and no less than two or three times per day. Horses are grazers that require roughage continually and regularly. Know the protein level of your roughage source so you can properly balance your horse's diet.

Energy
Balance the protein content of your horse's grain mix with the protein level and amount of the selected roughage to ensure the protein-to-calorie ratio is maintained within acceptable limits. Feed your horse grain only when needed to provide adequate levels of energy and protein.

Energy status is evaluated by assessing the body condition of the horse. You should ensure your horse maintains moderate body weight. Ribs should be covered with a layer of fat but easily felt. The topline of the horse, or span of the back from neck to rear, should appear to be fairly flat when viewed from the side.

Protein, Fat, or Fiber for Horses
The daily amount of protein and amino acids required is determined by the horse’s age, weight, growth rate, breed, health, metabolic rate, and environmental conditions. Balance the percent of protein to the grain mix with the percent of protein level of your roughage. Your county or state agriculture agency can test your hay to determine protein content. Or purchase high-quality horse feed specifically formulated for your horse's life stage and activity level. Each type of feed contains different percentages of protein, fat, and fiber. These levels are not accidental. Different types of feed are designed to have the right amount of protein, fat, and fiber for a particular animal.

Horses receiving alfalfa hay as bulk should be fed grain with a lower percent protein content than horses that are fed grass hay due to the higher protein content of alfalfa. Young, growing horses should not be fed excess amounts of protein, as this has been associated with certain types of developmental orthopedic disease.

Minerals
Do not haphazardly supplement individual minerals to a horse’s diet. Used incorrectly, many minerals can cause more harm than good. Ensure that your horse’s mineral and vitamin requirements are met and properly balanced by knowing your horse’s mineral requirements and feeding it with a fortified product according to labeled directions.

Vitamins
Mature, healthy horses can quite often meet their vitamin requirements via intestinal synthesis or metabolic synthesis by consuming feedstuffs that contain natural vitamins or their precursors. Young horses, performance horses, or horses under a greater than normal degree of stress due to disease, environment, or temperament may require vitamin supplements.

If you provide vitamin supplements, remember that your horse will also require mineral supplements. The best solution is often a micro-nutrient supplement that contains both minerals and vitamins.

How to Feed a Horse
Horse feed comes in three forms (or a combination of the forms):

The pelleted feed has the ingredients milled and formed into pellets.
Sweet feed is feed in the form of fresh grains plus pellets
Block feed has the ingredients milled and formed into solid blocks.
Equine minerals come in two forms:

Loose minerals can be offered by a separate mineral feeder or added to feed just as p

Sharing your life with a horse can be a rewarding experience, but it includes the responsibility of caring for your equine companion for life.

Your horse depends on your love, care, and commitment. You'll show your love through grooming, petting, riding, and the occasional treat.

You must also show your commitment by providing for her needs 365 days a year, in good weather and bad. With good care, your horse can live 35 years or more.

Here are some general horse care considerations:

1. Routine horse care is a significant and ongoing expense
The purchase price of a horse is often much less than the cost of maintaining a horse for a year. Make sure you are realistic about your ability to afford quality care before you acquire an equine companion.

2. Horses need a regular supply of food and water
In most cases, they need to have hay or pasture throughout the day, with additional grain feedings twice a day. An average-size horse will eat about 20 lbs. of food a day and drink at least eight gallons of water. Because their stomachs are relatively small and their digestive systems surprisingly delicate, horses need to nibble or graze throughout the day, rather than have one or two meals a day.

3. Horses need hoof maintenance
Plan to hire a farrier (blacksmith) every six to eight weeks for routine hoof trimming or shoeing.

4. Horses need veterinary care
At least once a year, your horse will need to be vaccinated against tetanus and other diseases. The veterinarian will also provide routine dental care. Keep in mind that medical emergencies, which are always an unfortunate possibility, can cost several thousand dollars to treat.

5. Be aware of parasites
Since horses are constantly exposed to intestinal worms from the ground they graze on, they must be on an anti-parasite regimen as prescribed by your equine practitioner. Carrying a heavy burden of worms can cause serious illness or death in equines, so regular and timely treatment is crucial to your horse's health.

6. Don't forget about shelter
Horses need constant access to a dry, safe, comfortable shelter to protect them from rain, wind, and snow. In warm and sunny weather, the shelter you supply will provide your companion with much-needed shade and relief from biting insects. At a minimum, you should have a well-constructed, three-sided shed into which your horse can retreat at all times. You will need to remove manure from the stall or shelter every day.

7. Horses need exercise
To supplement the exercise your horse will get when you ride him, he should have a paddock or pasture in which to relax and stroll. No horse should spend all day confined in a stall, except on a veterinarian's recommendation. The pasture should be bordered by safe, sturdy fencing that will keep the horse safe and secure. Barbed wire is not an acceptable fencing material—it has been the cause of many serious injuries.

-10 HORSE CARE TIPS FOR A HEALTHY AND HAPPY HORSE-

Many riders and horse owners spend a notable amount of time training. The health and appearance of the horse are often neglected.

“You will be surprised how many horses come to the demonstration ring having chips in their tails or where there is still p**p stains on the fur,” said Richard Petty, who has been judging horses since 1978.

But how to make sure your horse is mentally and physically healthy?

1) Feeding: If good fresh grass is not available, hay is the most important source of nutrition for horses.
Always try to prefer hay that is as fine-stemmed, soft, green, and leafy, and try to avoid hay that is excessively sun-bleached, or smells moldy, musty, dusty.

Also, don’t forget a salt lick or mineral block in the paddock.

2) Supplementary feed: Regularly working horses may need supplementary feed if the horse is losing condition.

Consult your veterinarian for suitable supplementary feeds. Make sure the horse is getting enough Omega-3 which is necessary for the horse’s diet to get a shiny coat.

3) Water: Fresh clean water should always be available to horses since dehydration can contribute to poor health and can be deadly.
Unhygienic water can also withhold bacteria or viruses that can make your horse sick. Troughs and waterers must be cleaned frequently.

You can try to add some apple vinegar to the water to keep it clean.

4) Grooming: Grooming is an essential component of horse care. It is more than just brushing the horse. It requires knowledge, attention, and care.

A quick grooming every day helps increase blood circulation and gives you the chance to check your horse's body, especially the parts of the body that will come into contact with tack.

Don’t hesitate to invest some money in good quality grooming equipment to get a healthy coat.

5) Stable: Horses spend some of their time inside stalls. For good horse care and safety, barns, sheds, and stalls have to be suitably designed.

All stalls, fences, windows, and doors, walls, and ceilings should be free of dangers. According to the Canadian Agri-Food Research Council, a loose box should be at least 3mx3m to 3.6mx3.6m for an average size horse.

Horses appreciate the extra room to move around.

6) Paddock: Good horse care involves providing the best environment, which is safe and natural for the horse.
The horse’s surroundings must be free from hazards such as holes, rusty farm machinery, and loose wire fences. Fences around the horses must be repaired regularly to prevent injury and escape.

7) Company: This is the most important element for a horse’s mental health because they are herd animals and need the companionship of another horse, donkey, mule or pony or another animal such as a sheep or goat., whether in the same paddock or in a neighboring paddock.

Keeping the horse with older and experienced horses may also help him overcome his fears and problems when hacking.

8) Exercise: Daily exercise is essential for the overall health of your horse.
A daily workout has many benefits such as increasing stamina and endurance, improving the functioning of the heart and lungs, facilitating and maintains proper bone and hoof development, etc.

A basic exercise work can be composed of 4 steps: warming up, stretching, workout exercise, the cool-down.

9) Riding: If your horse can be ridden, attending a riding club,s or taking regular riding lessons can help you to learn to ride properly.

Before riding, the priority should be taking precautions for a safe ride both for your horse and yourself.
After the riding, don’t forget to care for and reward the horse because being ridden is not his job. He also deserves some games, care, and rewards.

10) Equipment:
Buying proper riding equipment is fundamental to ensure your safety and prevent harm to your horse.
When purchasing equestrian clothes and gear, it is important to keep in mind the various viewpoints such as quality, durability, and budget.
In the equestroom online boutique, we are offering high-quality tack at very competitive prices.

Our face masks for horses come in the standard pull-on style. Or, you can add a heavy-duty YKK zipper under the jaw which allows you to place the mask over a bridle.

Fitting your slinky Face Mask – Most horses are very tolerant of having things pulled over their heads. Your mask should fit smooth, like swimwear, on the horse’s head, but not too tight to create a rub. Center your horse’s eyes in the middle of the holes. If the eyes are too far in one direction, the face slinky can rub your horse’s eyes when he moves or stretches. Then, make sure his ears are in the holes’ center. If they aren’t, the sleazy could rub his ears and cause discomfort. Finally, adjust the noseband to keep the slinky face mask in place.

For extra visibility, available in Hunter Safety Orange.

Have a horse that isn’t average? Call us or use this Measuring Guide.

Your slinky face mask contains 80% nylon/ 20% spandex fabric. Therefore, it is machine washable and air dries fast. For best results, follow our simple Care Instructions. You should wash your face mask at least once a week to prevent a buildup of bacteria.
