Spring is here! And with that comes a warning about Leptospirosis, a disease caused by infection with Leptospira bacteria.

All dogs are at risk of leptospirosis, regardless of age, breed, lifestyle, geographic location, time of year, and other factors. The following situations can increase that risk:

➡Exposure to or drinking from slow-moving or stagnant water sources, like ponds, rivers, lakes, or streams
➡ Roaming on rural properties (because of exposure to potentially infected wildlife or farm animals or urine-contaminated water sources)
➡ Exposure to wild animals (especially rodents) or farm animals, even if in the backyard
➡ Contact with other dogs (such as in urban areas, dog parks, or boarding or training facilities)

Once upon a time there was a family, that was fostering an akita pup. He was a foster fail. He had multiple behavioral problems and unknown physical conditions because he was very scared and acted aggressively at the vet. His motto became the best defense is a good offense.
His family sought the help of Dr. Colleen Koch, DVM, DACVB- our board certified veterinary behaviorist. His owners are amazing and do what they can to help him out. Through their patience, management, and behavior modification; everyone’s quality of life is improved.
He still is fearful at the vet; however, with the right pre-visit medications on board the team at Lincoln Land sedates him and he gets everything done.
The last time he was here we found he had, at some point in his life, fractured his hip (no wonder he was uncomfortable!), he also had terrible skin problems- a biopsy showed a very treatable disease, he also had allergies and was hypothyroid. All of these were treated appropriately which further improved his quality of life.
Today, was another 30k mile check up. He did great! His coat is much improved, he did have a tooth that was fractures and needed to be removed and a urinary tract infection.
When our special patients are here it is all hands on deck, working together to get all procedures done quickly and efficiently.
We are so grateful the owners have taught him to love wearing his muzzle and some cooperative care it helps to keep everyone safe and comfortable!
He is not a mean dog, just a scared, painful pup.

Many of you may not know this, but Dr. Joe and Dr. Colleen bought Lincoln Land Animal Clinic from Dr. Vernon Lindell.
Dr. Joe worked with Dr. Lindell when the clinic was just large animal clinic and Dr. Joe wanted to do some small animal. Lots of fun times were had together.
Until we meet again Dr. Lindell- rest in peace: 1931-2025
