Happy Thursday! We just wanted to share three recent acts of kindness from our community 💕

💖 Steve, a manager at Tractor Supply, brought us a truckload (literally!) of dog and cat food. He said he’s adopted dogs from us before and loves being able to pay it forward.

💖 Erica saw a post of our extremely matted Doodle friend and immediately volunteered her services, taking a huge task off our vet team’s shoulders and helping this guy feel a lot more comfortable.

💖 The Sweetwater Housing Community held a donation drive for us and collected tons of linens, food, treats, and even human clothing and monetary donations.

We’re so thankful to be supported by such a generous community! Thank you all ❤️

You may remember us posting back in January that our shelter, thanks to Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity, achieved a CARE REDI Copper certification… and we’re proud to announce that we’re the first shelter EVER to do so! 🥳✨ Our staff attended ‘s virtual Racial Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion course and became part of their mission to empower animal shelters to be inclusive of marginalized groups in their work.

A huge win that has stemmed from this is the increased reach of our Bo’s Hope program. Our Community Pets in the Park days in particular have allowed us to go into neighborhoods throughout our city rather than simply hope that people come to us when they’re in need, and we’ve gotten to supply a huge portion of our population with free vaccines, free microchips, free grooming, and free dog and cat supplies. With a newfound awareness of our own biases and potential barriers to adoption or care, we have the opportunity every single day to allow our community members to tell us what they need, and we are consistently reaching out to underserved communities for their perspectives. This knowledge helped us move beyond performative actions and transformed how we approach our role in our community.

Thank you, CARE! We can’t wait to continue learning, and we’re grateful for our role in fostering a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable Jacksonville—for people and pets alike. ❤️

Remember Miracle Max (now Luka)? We shared the beginning of his story a couple weeks ago (https://buff.ly/qW7G5GM ) and can't wait to share his happy ending. We're already crying, so buckle up...

When we last left off, our vet had just performed an emergency surgery to remove a huge corn cob that was blocking Luka's intestines. He left for a foster home to recover, and was in much better spirits than when he came to us.

Soon, though, Luka's fosters had to rush him in the middle of the night to Veterinary Emergency Group, or VEG, in critical condition. Their team discovered that fluid was rapidly filling the space around Luka's lungs: he was "suffocating from the inside out," James, the medical director, said. Their emergency team placed a chest tube and began removing fluid.

When James checked on Luka, the dog was terrified and exhausted, and his future was uncertain. But as soon as James knelt beside him, he rested his head in his lap and fell asleep. 🥺 "This changed everything," James said. "I knew we had to try to save him."

It turns out that Luka had a serious bacterial infection. As a stray, though, there was no one to cover the tens of thousands of dollars needed for advanced imaging and surgery; unfortunately, our shelter isn't able to perform these procedures. We weren’t sure how to proceed. James told us that he asked himself the question: “What if Luka was relinquished to me? The surgery, which would typically cost up to $20,000, would be done at a discount by teams of vets and vet students."

This transfer was approved, and the team went straight to surgery. They were shocked to find that an 8 inch corndog stick had punctured THROUGH Luka's chest, pressing against his lungs and heart. Difficult to detect, “it had been there for who knows how long—silently causing infection, inflammation, and life-threatening damage.” 💔

Luka remained at VEG post-op for several days under intensive care, and with each passing day, he showed a little more spark—eating, wagging his tail, and finally, breathing on his own.

"Eventually, he was discharged—not back to a shelter, but home with ME," James said. "Miracle Max is now Luka, and he lives his best life with his two dog brothers, a big backyard, and more love than he’s ever known. Luka’s story is one of resilience, teamwork, and choosing to say yes—even when the odds say no." 😭 🥹

From a dumpster-diving stray who survived not one but TWO complex emergency surgeries, to a goofy, happy member of a loving family, Luka truly is a miracle. ❤️

Swipe through the photos to follow Luka's time at VEG! James asks that you share Luka’s journey to raise awareness about the critical work of city shelter veterinary teams, the life-saving power of emergency veterinary care, and the beautiful transformations that happen when a community comes together for an animal in need. We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. 🥰

Team ACPS wishes you a happy (and safe!) Fourth of July! 🇺🇸🎆

Remember to keep a collar with tags on your pets and keep them inside whenever possible, especially once the fireworks start. Our pups enjoyed their photo shoots well before the festivities started 😉

With the July 4th holiday—and the fireworks that accompany it—quickly approaching, we want to give our yearly reminder that fireworks can be extremely stressful for many dogs and cats. 😞 Luckily, there are easy ways to make your pets feel safe and secure if they have anxiety during storms or fireworks shows:

✨ Set them up with a cozy safe space in your home
✨ Give them enrichment (kongs, toys, frozen snacks, etc.) to keep their brains busy
✨ Let them use the bathroom outside early, before the festivities start
✨ Ask your vet about calming products like medication, scents, or thunder shirts

Fear can lead to your pet panicking and bolting, able to flee through an open door quickly, despite every effort to keep them safe and secure. To help reunite pets who become lost over the weekend, ACPS will be giving out FREE ID tags that you can attach to your pets' collars with your name and contact information. This can be the difference between frantically searching for your dog or cat for days, and getting a phone call just hours after they go missing.

We'll be open from 12:00 - 7:00 today and ‼️ 12:00 - 4:00 ‼️ on Friday. Come see us!

📣 We've got good news and bad news. The bad news? Our return-to-owner rate, or the percentage of owned pets that we are able to reunite with their families when they come to us as strays, is down significantly for cats compared to this time last year. Why might this be? It can be tougher to walk the neighborhood with a lost cat, the way we recommend folks to do with dogs. It can also be difficult to find a lost cat in the first place: maybe they blend in with a feral cat colony, or are terrified and making themselves as silent and hidden as possible.

But onto the good news: there are things you can do that can speed up a reunion. Grinch, the tiny kitten in the first photo, was reunited with his family last year thanks to an up-to-date microchip. As soon as our officer scanned the chip, she called Grinch's family, who had been worried sick. All of this without having to spend one minute in the shelter!

Since the July 4th holiday is quickly approaching, and fear and stress from the fireworks can cause pets to bolt from open doors and flee, ACPS will be giving out FREE ID tags that you can attach to your pets' collars with your name and contact information. This can be the difference between frantically searching for your dog or cat for days, and getting a phone call just hours after they go missing. Even if your pet is microchipped, we highly recommend an ID tag. It's quick and easy, not even requiring a trip to a vet or shelter to scan for a chip. ❤️

We'll be open from 12:00 - 7:00 today and 12:00 - 4:00 on Friday. Come see us—and let's get that RTO percentage up!

We just can’t get enough of our Mega adoption photos, so please enjoy just 20 of our faves out of the literal HUNDREDS of pets who found homes this weekend. 🥲 We are so thankful for every foster, adopter, and volunteer who made this year’s Mega amazing!

Happy endings like these happen every single day in our shelter, too—come be a part of them. ❤️
