Golden Peacock Bass are stunning and powerful freshwater fish that make an impressive addition to large home aquariums. Native to South America, these fish are known for their vibrant yellow-gold coloration, sleek torpedo-shaped bodies, and aggressive hunting behavior. They require a spacious tank—at least 180 gallons for juveniles and much larger for adults, as they can grow over two feet long. Because of their predatory nature, they do best in species-only setups or with other large, robust fish that can handle their dominance. A strong filtration system is essential to maintain water quality, as Peacock Bass produce a significant amount of waste.

Keeping Golden Peacock Bass requires commitment, as they have specialized dietary needs and a long lifespan of over ten years. In the wild, they feed on live fish and invertebrates, so in captivity, they should be offered high-quality meaty foods such as shrimp, fish fillets, and protein-rich pellets. They are intelligent and can recognize their owners, often displaying interactive behavior at feeding times. However, due to their large size and predatory instincts, they are not ideal for beginner aquarists. If provided with the right environment, a balanced diet, and proper care, Golden Peacock Bass can be a striking and rewarding centerpiece fish for experienced fishkeepers. (Fish shown located at Dunn Ave location).

The Amphiacanthoides uaru, commonly known as the Uaru cichlid, is a captivating species of freshwater fish native to the slow-moving rivers and tributaries of the Amazon Basin in South America. Known for their distinct appearance, Uaru cichlids have a deep, laterally compressed body with large, roundish shape and vibrant, golden-brown coloration, often highlighted by darker vertical stripes. These cichlids are peaceful and social compared to other cichlid species, making them a suitable choice for community aquariums, though they still require ample space and carefully chosen tankmates to avoid aggression. They thrive in warm, slightly acidic to neutral water with temperatures between 74-82°F (23-28°C). Uaru cichlids are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a variety of plant material such as algae, fruits, and aquatic plants, though they may occasionally accept protein-rich foods. As they grow larger, reaching up to 12 inches in length, it’s important to provide them with a spacious tank that offers plenty of hiding spots and a soft substrate. With proper care and attention, Uaru cichlids make a peaceful and beautiful addition to aquariums, appreciated for both their graceful movements and vibrant colors.

Water Wisteria (Hygrophila difformis) is a popular and versatile aquatic plant commonly found in freshwater aquariums and ponds. Known for its lush, green foliage and fast-growing nature, Water Wisteria makes an excellent addition to any aquatic setup, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits. The plant features delicate, feathery leaves that can take on a slightly different appearance depending on whether it is grown submerged or emersed. Under water, the leaves appear finely divided and are often a vibrant green, creating a soft, bushy appearance. Water Wisteria thrives in nutrient-rich, well-lit environments, and its rapid growth helps maintain a healthy aquarium by absorbing excess nutrients and providing natural filtration. It is relatively easy to care for, tolerating a range of water conditions, though it grows best in temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C). As a hardy and adaptable plant, Water Wisteria is ideal for beginners and experienced aquarists alike, providing shelter for fish and improving water quality while enhancing the beauty of aquatic landscapes.

Neon Pothos (Epipremnum aureum), also known as “Neon Devil’s Ivy,” is a vibrant and low-maintenance houseplant that stands out due to its striking chartreuse or neon yellow-green foliage. This trailing vine is popular for both its aesthetic appeal and its easy-care nature, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those with a busy lifestyle. The plant is adaptable to a wide range of light conditions, though it thrives best in bright, indirect light, where its leaves retain their brilliant color. Neon Pothos can tolerate low light but may lose some of its vibrancy. It is also known for its air-purifying qualities, as it helps remove toxins from indoor environments. The plant is resilient to occasional neglect, requiring only occasional watering when the soil feels dry to the touch. Neon Pothos can be grown in hanging baskets, pots, or as a trailing vine along shelves, making it a versatile addition to any indoor space. It’s important to note that like other pothos varieties, Neon Pothos is toxic to pets if ingested, so it should be kept out of reach of animals.

Available at Dunn Ave- The Leporinus fasciatus, commonly known as the banded leporinus, is a striking freshwater fish known for its bold black and yellow vertical stripes. Native to the rivers and tributaries of South America, particularly the Amazon and Orinoco basins, this species thrives in fast-moving waters with plenty of hiding spots among submerged wood and vegetation. Growing up to 12 inches in captivity, the banded leporinus is an active swimmer that requires a spacious tank with strong filtration. It is a hardy fish but prefers slightly acidic to neutral water conditions, with temperatures ranging from 72°F to 82°F. Due to its semi-aggressive nature and tendency to nip at the fins of slower-moving fish, it is best housed with similarly sized tankmates that can hold their own.

Despite its peaceful appearance, the Leporinus fasciatus can be a challenging species to keep due to its dietary needs and behavioral tendencies. It is an omnivore with a strong preference for plant-based foods, which means aquarists must provide a mix of vegetables, high-quality pellets, and occasional protein sources to maintain its health. However, this also makes it notorious for nibbling on live plants, so aquascaping with hardy species or artificial plants is often recommended. Additionally, it is known for its impressive jumping ability, making a secure lid essential for its aquarium. With proper care and a well-maintained environment, the banded leporinus can be a fascinating and long-lived addition to a large community tank, often living up to 10 years in captivity.

Filigree Myrio, scientifically known as Myriophyllum aquaticum, is a visually stunning aquatic plant commonly found in ponds and freshwater aquariums. Known for its finely divided, feathery leaves that resemble delicate lace, Filigree Myrio adds a soft, elegant touch to aquatic environments. The plant can grow both submerged and partially emergent, with its bright green foliage providing excellent coverage and oxygenation in the water. It thrives in moderate to high light conditions and prefers nutrient-rich water, making it an effective natural filter for keeping water clear and healthy. Filigree Myrio can grow rapidly, spreading through its branching stems, which makes it a great choice for aquascaping or providing shelter for fish and invertebrates. However, it does require regular maintenance to control its growth and prevent overcrowding in smaller aquariums. Additionally, this plant prefers a temperature range of 68–82°F (20–28°C), making it ideal for most freshwater setups.

CyroPro™ is a ready-to-use liquid concentrate developed by Hikari to effectively control diseases caused by anchor worms (Lernaea) and fish lice (Argulidae) in ponds, freshwater, and marine aquariums. Its formulation is highly effective yet safe for aquatic life, including scaleless fish, and does not negatively impact biological filtration systems. Additionally, CyroPro™ contains vitamin B12 to promote healing and a slime-coat replacer to speed recovery and reduce the risk of further infections. For optimal results, it’s recommended to start treatment with a significant water change (approximately 90%) or by using new water, conditioned with Hikari’s Ultimate® or a combination of ClorAm-X® and Stress-X™ to remove ammonia, chlorine, and chloramines. The treatment involves removing activated carbon filtration, ceasing protein skimming, and dosing CyroPro™ at one teaspoon per 50 gallons of water, repeating every seven days for a minimum of three consecutive weeks.

02/28/2025

Seachem Catappa Leaves are a popular aquarium addition, often used by aquarists for their numerous benefits in both freshwater and marine setups. Derived from the Indian almond tree (Terminalia catappa), these leaves are rich in natural compounds like tannins, which help lower pH and promote a more natural, acidic environment. They are known for their ability to enhance water quality by releasing beneficial substances that can reduce stress in fish, support breeding, and even have mild antibacterial and antifungal properties. The leaves also provide shelter and hiding places for fish, particularly small or shy species, and are often used to mimic the natural habitat of fish like bettas and shrimps. Over time, the leaves decompose in the aquarium, creating a soft, brownish tint in the water that many aquarists appreciate for its aesthetic and its soothing effects on fish. Additionally, they can be a food source for some species, with certain fish nibbling on the decomposing leaves.

Getting some hairy eyeball from our Hairy Puffer on Dunn Ave!!
The Hairy Pufferfish (Tetraodon baileyi) is a fascinating but challenging pet best suited for experienced aquarists. Native to fast-flowing freshwater rivers in Southeast Asia, this ambush predator is known for its unique bristle-like skin, giving it a “hairy” appearance that helps it blend into its environment. Unlike many other puffers, the Hairy Puffer prefers a more sedentary lifestyle, often lying in wait for prey rather than actively swimming. It requires a spacious tank with excellent filtration, as these fish are sensitive to water quality. A strong current mimicking their natural habitat is also beneficial. Since they are highly aggressive and territorial, they should be housed alone, as they will attack tankmates, including other puffers.

Feeding a Hairy Pufferfish is another key consideration, as they are strict carnivores with a strong preference for live or frozen foods. A diet of earthworms, shrimp, snails, and other meaty foods is essential to keep them healthy and maintain their sharp beak-like teeth. They are not community fish and can be quite reclusive, often hiding under rocks or burrowing into the substrate. Despite their somewhat sedentary nature, they have a lot of personality, recognizing their owners and even exhibiting interactive behaviors. However, their specific care requirements, aggressive temperament, and relatively short lifespan of about five years make them a pet best suited for dedicated aquarists who can provide the specialized environment and diet they need to thrive.
