Meet Tom, one of our newest permanent residents. Sometimes he identifies as an orange spotted cobra, but we all know he's really a toffeebelly hognose. He's full of curiosity and personality which makes him a great fit with us.

Ever wondered how we s*x tarantulas? Utilizing the molts we look for a spermetheca (female reproductive organs) between the top two book lungs. Obviously the smaller the tarantula = the harder it is to examine. We start by moistening the molt with warm water. Then gently opening it with tweezers, toothpicks, or paintbrushes. Females have spermetheca. Males do not. This video demonstrates a very clear obvious female. For size reference, those are needle point tweezers.

Xenesthis immanis also known as the Columbian lesser black tarantula known for their striking coloring and fairly large size. Today we are pairing these two again. Last pairing didn't go so well. In contrast, today's pairing was fast and smooth.
