Fergus and his mom came by this week to thank us for fixing his knee. He had a failed procedure done elsewhere that we revised with a combination TPLO and patella stabilization. He’s six weeks out from surgery and walking better than he has in months! Full recovery takes around 12 weeks and most dogs return to normal activity once healed.

Utah is a handsome boy that came in to show off how great he's doing and get his stitches removed two weeks after surgery. Unfortunately, he required an emergency amputation due to a tumor that caused his femur to fracture. While this can be a challenge, most dogs live a happy and comfortable life as a "tripawd".

This special dog is part of K9's for Warriors, which helps pair military veterans and service dogs with the goal of ending veteran su***de. At JVSO, part of our mission is giving back to our community and we're honored to work with organizations such as K9s For Warriors and appreciate that they put their trust in us.

Stress x-rays can help us evaluate the stability of joints. The first photo shows the hock joint (ankle) of a dog in a neutral and hyperflexed position, which demonstrates an instability at the proximal intertarsal joint, or one of the small foot joints just below the ankle. This required fusion of that joint called a partial tarsal arthrodesis. After 6-8 weeks of healing, most dogs are back to full function.

Juliette came to us through our friends at Florida Urgent Rescue. She was found as a stray with an old fractured femur that had healed like a "Z". Dr. Neihaus and his team were able to perform a corrective osteotomy to give her a straight leg again. Juliette came in today for her 6 week check-up and not only has the bone healed, but she's walking so well, you would never know anything had happened to her! We're all thrilled at such a great outcome and happy to help such a deserving dog and organization.

Moo Moo, the orange and white kitty with his heart shaped marking, came to us after breaking his femur at the growth plate just above the knee. Dr. Neihaus and team were able to successfully repair the fracture and get Moo Moo on the road to recovery. It will take about a month for him to heal up, but he should be good as new after that!

Our JVSO crew had a great time celebrating the holiday season with our first annual holiday party at the Jacksonville Icemen. It was the first hockey game for many of the staff and they got to see an Icemen winner! This is the best team in Jacksonville to take care of your pets on and off the ice.

Lucky is one lucky dog. He was rescued by a family in North Carolina while they were delivering supplies after Hurricane Helene. He was found with a broken leg and no collar or microchip. His new family brought him back to Florida to get his leg fixed. With some assistance from a local church and Dr. Neihaus, we were able to repair Lucky’s broken tibia and avoid an amputation. Now that he’s all healed up, he can live a normal, happy life with a great new family.

All creatures great and small. We see them all at JVSO. Today Dr. Neihaus and crew fixed a broken femur on Rollo, a tiny 1 pound kitten with an IM pin and external fixator. At this age, the bone will be healed in about 2 weeks then the hardware can be removed.

For reference- the pins are 1.1 mm in diameter, the same size as a paper clip!

CT imaging with 3-D reconstruction is only one of the state-of-the-art technologies we offer. This week we imaged the pelvis of a large breed dog after being hit by a car and sustaining a complex pelvic fracture. This was used to guide surgical decision making and repair. In this case, bilateral sacroiliac luxations were stabilized with a lag screw and transilial bolt.

He ate WHAT?!?!

Naughty little Jinx came in today for vomiting and not eating. Radiographs showed his stomach was filled with foreign material. Dr. Neihaus took him to surgery and removed 43 hair ties from his stomach! He should feel better quickly now that he has room for food again. Mom is now keeping her hair ties under lock and key!

Pepper is a sweet little rat terrier brought to us by New Rattitude Rat Terrier Rescue. She was found as a stray with a broken ulna that extended into her elbow joint. Since this is an articular fracture, it needed to be repaired perfectly to prevent arthritis later in life. Dr. Neihaus and team repaired the fracture with a locking bone plate and screws. And they did just before Hurricane Helene hit Jacksonville!
At Jacksonville Veterinary Surgery and Orthopedics, we are proud to partner with local rescue groups to help injured pets get the care they need so they can find their forever homes.

We LOVE hearing from our clients!

Christina S. messaged us today saying “Hi Dr. Neihaus, this is my dog Laguna. I wanted to send you a before and after photo of Laguna’s procedure. She is doing great and looks even more perfect! Thank you.”

Laguna was having a hard time breathing due to very stenotic nares, a common problem in brachycephalic (smoosh-faced) dogs. Dr. Neihaus removed the obstructive alar cartilage and now she can breath like a champ!

Pink Girl is a sweet Golden Retriever puppy adopted by a local veterinarian after they found out she had a congenital heart defect called a Patent Ductus Ateriosus (PDA). Without surgery, most dogs with PDA don’t survive beyond a year of age. Thankfully, Dr. Neihaus and crew were able to ligate the PDA and send Pink Girl home the same day! After a short recovery, she should live a normal, happy life.
