‼️FOSTERS STILL NEEDED‼️
We are still in need of more dog foster homes! Dogs often find shelter life stressful as it is so much more different than a traditional home. Foster care benefits our animals so much; they relax, they sleep better, they have better manners, and we can see their true personalities helping us better match our dogs to their new families.

Meet Sassy! Sassy came to us as a very scared and timid stray 4-month-old puppy. The shelter, everything & everyone trying to help her terrified her, so much that she was growling and nippy. She was scared all the time and had some major trust issues. Fast forward a few weeks and now in her foster home (with the help of her foster brother Tank) she is opening up, playing, meeting and trusting new people and sleeping soundly all night.

Say hello to Carter! Carter is a senior dog that finds shelter life to be too hard on his nap schedule. At 11 years old, he has spent most of his life in a home, so being at the shelter is confusing, noisy and extremely stressful for him for long periods of time. Carter was in a temporary foster home to help him get out of the shelter for a bit when we were at our fullest. He was able to nap and play and get some much-needed alone time, allowing him to decompress. Although his time was temporary, any time in a foster home is beneficial for our animals. It’s like a vacation for humans; it gives their mind and body time to relax and reset.

Did you know when you foster for HSSW, there is no cost to you at all?? We provide all the food, bedding, care needs and support. All you need to provide is love and space. The dogs … well they provide the kisses!

📣 We are in major need of Pill Pockets for the animals in our care!
Pill Pockets help us give much needed medications to our dogs, wrapped up in a delicious treat. Medications such as preventatives, antibiotics and treatments for illness & injuries, pain medicine after spay & neuter surgeries and more.

Last week we helped 42 pets find new loving homes! This included 18 dogs and 24 cats. 11 lost pets were also reunited with their families.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, we’re hosting an adoption special all week long!! And over the weekend!! Starting TOMORROW (February 10th), you can come in, fall in love with a new furry friend, and then choose a candy heart. The color of candy heart you choose will determine the adoption fee you pay to bring your new furry friend home (ranging from $0-$25)! This special will go through February 16th, but don’t be afraid to come in right away and give love a chance at HSSW. We also have the lobby decorated for some really cute photo ops post-adoption!

This is already all pretty exciting, but ON TOP OF these special adoption rates, our friends at The Diamond Center are offering $50 gift cards to anyone who adopts from HSSW between February 10th and February 14th as part of their Love the Shines Forever event. This means that you can both adopt a new love into your life AND spoil yourself (or someone else) with some beautiful jewelry.

Additional fees beyond the adoption fee: City of Janesville licensing (if applicable), cat carrier (if not provided), leash and collar (if not provided). During this adoption event, adopters are still required to complete a standard adoption application as if it were a normal day. This adoption special pricing excludes Adoption Guaranteed pets. Special adoption prices do not apply to off-site adoption centers, like Petco.

We're shouting a huge THANK YOU to Greater Good Charities for helping Bruzer through their Emergency Animal Medical Grant Program!! With this support, we have now been able to cover virtually ALL of Bruzer's extensive medical care!

Do you remember Bruzer's story? If not, here goes nothing. Bruzer was adopted into a loving family this summer and at first everything was going well. However, as their time together went on, his family noticed that Bruzer was not doing so hot. They exhausted all of their resources trying to get him well again, but ultimately decided that his medical needs were more than they could take on and brought him back to HSSW this fall.

As soon as Bruzer arrived back at HSSW, the team here recognized that he needed to get to an ER as soon as possible and that's what we did. Once at the ER, he went into surgery pretty quickly. The ER team found that he had a sliding hiatal hernia that essentially created a pocket in his diaphragm which allowed his liver to slip up into the pocket. The portion of his liver that slid into that pocket did die and stuck itself to the diaphragm. The surgery removed the necrotic portion of the liver, unadhered the tissues that needed to be removed, tacked his stomach, repaired the original hernia, and set his esophagus back in place. WHEW - that was a lot!!

After his surgery, he came back to HSSW and we began a new feeding and healing regiment for him. This included eating his meals sitting up like a person - in our case, we sat with him on our laps or in a Bailey Chair. This also included keeping his activity level low, keeping him relaxed, and giving him his daily medications. Bruzer was a great patient and is doing SO well now!! So well in fact, that he has graduated from his Bailey Chair and now eats on all fours now AND is available for adoption ❤

We had a few new faces come to HSSW late last night! These pups arrived on a Greater Good Charities flight from the Louisiana area yesterday and we are so happy they are here! These six dogs will all be heading into foster care today, but will also be available for adoption today as well. This means that they will not be at HSSW to be met with, but you can coordinate a meet and greet with our staff that works for both you and their foster. Keep an eye on our website for more information about Cupid, Cuddles, Cookie, Scout, Bella Mae, & Pipsqueak! Thank you so much to the whole team at Greater Good & for the shelters that cared for these pups before they made their way north ❤

Meet Rogue! Rogue came to us back in August with a bit of plastic wrapped VERY tightly around her back leg. This plastic caused her leg to become very swollen and painful for her. Ultimately, her leg needed to be amputated. After her surgery, she went to a foster home to heal up. And as you can see from the video - she's doing GREAT! Rogue enjoys the company of her human and feline housemates, but would love a more permanent home to call her own. We just want to take a minute to brag up our animal services team and give them a huge round of applause. 👏 Today 20 (that's right 20) of our shelter dogs got to get out of their kennels and jump into a doggie playgroup. 😍 Not only are playgroups a ton of fun, they also provide essential benefits. Playing can be a dog's most natural form of positive interaction and communication with both humans and other dogs. They are essential in helping decrease stress and promote a better quality of life while here at the shelter. In addition to exercise and social interaction, playgroups provide opportunity for enrichment, assessment, training and behavior modification. We want to send a huge THANK YOU to Dogs Playing for Life for teaching us the importance of these playgroups as well as how to conduct them. Happy dogs = more adoptable dogs! ❤❤
