The First Week Of A Corso 🐾

There is a lot that goes on before birth, to prep for the miracle but well start at birth.
Once a mother births her pups we change the bedding, weigh the pups and guarantee the cameras are still working. Weighing the pups shortly after birth is something that we find to be critical. We do this daily and if the pups aren’t gaining 5% of their body weight, we supplement. We check the temperature of the whelping room often to make sure the pups are maintaining a good temperature. We also check the umbilical cords. If they’re extra long, we will take care of them for her. On day 2-3 its time for tail docking. We load the pups up with a heating pad and take them to the vet to have their tails docked and their dew claws removed.
Fun fact: Some dogs can have front and back dew claws, and even double dew claws. Every Mama is different but if she allows it, we try our hardest to leave her on free feed and water throughout this time. We spend hours monitoring Mama and pups during the first week as we don’t want to lose any precious puppies.
