I thought it had become very “still” in the last 15 minutes…

Darla’s playmates are exhausted! Now, to just get this little babe to nod off before they wake up. 🙏🏼

PS: Darla is a foster and looking for her new home. She’s ADORABLE and wicked smart. (Woodburn, Oregon) Solid hybrid. We are guessing boxer and German Shorthaired Pointer. Maybe? So fast! So cute!

Oh, I’m a sucker for a sweet “we’re not sure what he is” cattle dog with a white tail tip. The physical manifestation of love and joy. Meet Axle. He’s awesome!

He’s all played out, but keeping those favorite toys close just in case he catches that second wind.

Amidst the disgust of people calling us every day to leave their dog at the shelter, how much beauty is there in an 80-year-old lady who asked us to adopt a dog of her age!!! And so an elderly dog that was thrown out of a car on the highway 15 days ago is now a life partner to a very nice grandma!

Live happily together!

I am honored that this beauty’s mom and dad have entrusted her anxious heart to me. Peaches is a rescue who has “people issues.” She’s slow to trust and hates direct eye contact. The first thing we did after her humans left? We took a nap together. This gives her a chance to see that I’m not a threat and that I trust her. I was told she wouldn’t sleep with me, but I woke up with her head on the next pillow over. She did some sniffs while I pretended to sleep. Apparently, we’re going to be just fine. ❤️

The leaving them part is so hard. ❤️ ‘til next time, guys.

CRAZY STORY, GREAT ENDING!!!

Helena native Bob Gist is a hero! Bob, who now resides in Jonesboro and runs a successful State Farm insurance biz, headed down to Grenada, Ms to do some crappie fishing with a friend on Lake Grenada. Bob, his friend and their fishing guide shoved off in their boat to spend the day fishing on the huge lake which is close to a mile and a half or more wide at some points.

As they were heading across, they saw a bunch of dogs swimming in the lake. These dogs were so far out the three men figured they needed to check on them. Reaching the dogs they realized there were dogs everywhere. They could tell the dogs were in distress. Where the heck did all these dogs come from and how did they end up in the middle of the lake? Turns out the dogs were a part of a Fox Run being held at Lake Grenada. They all had large numbers painted on their sides and were wearing expensive E-collars.

Unfortunately, the dogs had jumped a deer while on the fox run. The deer jumped into the lake and started to swim across. The dogs followed the deer. The dogs got so far out in the lake they lost sight of the shore line and didn’t know which way to swim. They were just paddling around in circles. That’s when Bob and his crew went to work and began pulling dogs out of the water. They loaded their boat with as many dogs as they could get and headed to the shore where their frantic owners were waiting. They went back and got as many of the dogs left in the lake as they could find and returned to the lake shore. They couldn’t see anymore dogs but an owner approached them and asked if he could get in the boat with them as he had GPS tracking that showed he still had four dogs out in the lake. So off they went.

By the time they got to the exhausted dogs, they could barely swim. Bob told me they grabbed the last four dogs as they were sinking under water.

Bob, his friend, and the fishing guide were able to save every dog! A grand total of 38 dogs. 38 DOGS! By the time they got the last dogs, the K-9s had been treading water for an hour.

I believe God puts people in the right place at the right time. Thank God Bob and his crew were there or this story could have had a tragic end. If you know Bob, reach out to him and tell him thanks for his heroic actions that day. Below is a picture of Bob bringing in a load of dogs. The pic was taken by one of the many grateful dog owners.

In the majority of cases, I see the animals I watch more than one time. Every once in a while, however, that doesn't work out.

Just yesterday I learned that good girl, Shelby, passed away on May 2. She was only 7 years old.

According to the message I received from her owner, they had relocated to the Houston, Texas area from Florida so that they had easier access to the cancer center while undergoing treatments. Shelby had been relocated and wasn't acclimating very well to her new (albeit temporary) surroundings and really hated the thunderstorms. On May 2nd there was a particularly violent storm that rolled through the area and one of the thunder explosions shook the house. She ran down the hall and into a closet she felt safe in. They found her later, dead of fear.

The owners did nothing wrong. She was loved. She was treated like a beloved child. When I watched her I did notice that she liked everything just a "certain way." The way we walked to the beach. (No deviations from the regular path, please.) Where and how she ate. (Do not be late, do not be early.) Where she slept, and which balcony was her favorite from which to heckle the golfers on the 9th hole.

If you have an animal that is similar in temperament, please consider visiting your veterinarian and obtaining supplements that help them to settle and "get out of their own head." In this case, it may have been the difference between life and death.

My preference is Zylkene. It is now available through Amazon and when used as directed, really helps pets and horses to rationalize the sounds and sights around them. Personally, I call it a deep breath for the brain. Instead of being sedated, they're removed from their flight instinct. It's an all-natural supplement made from casein - the component of doe and mare milk that makes the fawn or foal just go lay down and let mama graze. It doesn't make them groggy or make them sleep - it just relaxes them and makes them non-reactive. Great for "hot" horses that use up their energy overthinking things or being reactive to outside stimulus. With it, they are focused on the job at hand. It makes them safer without sedation! Another added bonus: animals on Zylkene retain what they learn while on the supplement, as opposed to sedated animals, who do not.

Finally - it is NOT a drug. Follow the directions on the package and you should have amazing results. With the 4th of July and all that goes with it coming up fast - now is the time to get Zylkene for your animals.

A little background:

I have been caring for, training, and loving animals now for the better part of 60 years!

Currently, I am 7 months (as of June) into my "Year of Voluntary Homelessness" journey. This doesn't mean I don't have places to land from time to time, no job, or that I'm living in my car. What it does mean is that I am fortunate to be so busy that I don't require a permanent address.

I started out last November when the home I was renting went up for sale and I started to consider where to land. The solution presented itself very quickly! Facing the potential of yet another rainy, cold and otherwise soggy and miserable winter in the Pacific Northwest - I opted out. I departed for southern California where I spent a couple of weeks caring for pets. Then, on to Phoenix to see my son and his family for about a week. From there, to Tucson to visit Genay and get some good horse time in. I headed to Texas to visit a few friends. I stopped in Pensacola, FL for a 10-day house and pet-sitting stay and then on to my final destination: Palm Coast, FL. Zero regrets!

I continued to work remotely and had successful house and pet sitting gigs in Ft. Lauderdale, St. Augustine, Palm Coast, and Daytona, FL as well as in Georgia, North and South Carolina, and Albama. My scheduled trip to Switzerland was postponed when the homeowner broke her leg and couldn't complete her anticipated trip to the US. That was saddening, but we are going to try to arrange it again for Spring 2025.

I am currently back in the Pacific Northwest for summer and fall 2024.

I haven't decided exactly where I'll be spending winter 2024/25, but my guess is it will be somewhere south and east again. Although I haven't ruled out somewhere in Portugal, Spain, or even Australia.

I LOVE animals. If you've been toying with the idea of a trip (long or short) and just can't do it because of your pets and / or livestock or requirements of your home - - let me help! You can rest assured your plants are watered, you mail is picked up, packages retrieved, house is kept clean and safe, and of course: that your animals are loved on, exercised, have eyeballs on them, and are fed properly, happy, and relaxed.

Yes, I do travel. Yes, I do get busy and booked-up in advance. However, it doesn't mean I don't have the random week or weekend here and there that I'm open. If your dates are flexible, I can probably get you on the books.

If your animals' happiness and well-being is a priority for you - it is for me as well. I don't currently have any animals of my own, so I am able to focus on yours without the distraction of my own. Old pets? Love 'em! Puppies? I'll help with their training! Cats? Purr-fect! Livestock? I got you covered! Horses need exercise? Let's chat about the specifics! Snakes or lizards? No, sorry. I just don't. No pets at all but want someone to caretake your home or property? You betcha!

I know not every caretaking fits neatly into a box, so let's work something out that is realistic for us both.

Thank you and I hope you'll let others know about my services.

Kelly
