FERAL CAT TRAP-NEUTER-RETURN PROJECT SCHEDULED FOR JERSEY CITY LAFAYETTE NEIGHBORHOOD

City of Jersey City to Provide Funding

(Jersey City, NJ) April 7, 2016 – Commencing May, 2016, Companion Animal Trust, the Jersey City non-profit animal rescue, will initiate a targeted feral cat Trap Neuter Return project in the Lafayette neighborhood of Jersey City, NJ. Funding for the project is being prov

ided by The City of Jersey City to cover costs for the spaying and neutering of 90 feral cats. In the Lafayette area there could be anywhere from 600 – 1,600 community cats living on the streets. Feral cats are free-roaming cats that are untamed and unsuitable for adoption. If left alone, they keep reproducing and can become a neighborhood nuisance prompting well-meaning community members to call animal control to take care of them. However, this just means that the cats are removed and killed, prompting new cats to take over the territory. In the process of Trap-Neuter-Return the cat is humanely trapped, then transported to a vet where it is spayed or neutered, ear tipped and rabies vaccinated. Then the cat is released back to its original outdoor location and managed by a caregiver. If you know where there are community cats living in the Lafayette area, please contact Companion Animal Trust at 201 884 9649 or email [email protected].
