Our last day of Equitarian Initiative was in Choluteca, a major city in western Honduras. We started the day with a colic/neurologic horse. It had been in a cart accident and developed nerve inflammation, leading to loss of a**l and tail tone. Since it could not defecate, it began to colic. We treated with fluids, enemas and anti-inflammatories. By the end of the day it was passing some manure on its own so there is hope!
The rest of the day was filled with dentals, vaccines and a couple castrations. No one really wants to castrate as they feel the horses are weaker and won’t be able to pull the cart as well.
We had plenty of help from the local children and saw around 70 horses.
One note is that the horses we saw this day were in such better condition than we saw in February. It was amazing to see the change and to know that the work we are doing is actually helping!

Day 4 found us in San Lorenzo, a city community. It was dry and dusty, and shade was hard to Come by. We often see a lot of harness wounds in areas such as this as many of the horses work hauling carts. We were surprised to find most of the horses doing fairly well! Which means what we are doing is having an effect. Many people came and wanted the teeth checked with the rough forage, these horses often wear their teeth well and need limited intervention. That being said, we still had a couple extractions to do and some other dental work. Dr. Matt worked up a respiratory case and helped with an infected hoof that we had to travel a bit farther for. One more day of work coming up! Equitarian Initiative

Good morning! Day 3 was in another mountain community called Tapatoca. We got through 50 horses for vaccines, deworming, wound care and dentals and surgeries. Numbers are a bit down and we believe it’s because we were here in February. We’re still getting to treat a lot of horses, though!
We did get to see our screw worm cases from last year, which was a nasty wound over the hock joint. The area that we treated has healed completely. However she did contract vesicular stomatitis and is now lame in another foot. That too is healing and hopefully will recover soon.
Overall it was a very good day of treating horses. Equitarian Initiative

Day 2 in a community called Esquimay (Eh-ski-mai). It was more than 2 hrs drive up a winding dirt road. We saw over 40 horses for castration, dentistry, wounds and our first screw worm cases of the trip. (I’ll do another post on that later as there are some graphic images.) we also saw some hooves that were previously affected by vascular stomatitis. Dr. Matt got to play with the puppy, but don’t worry. He also did some work too. We ended the day with a long drive back but a beautiful sunset. Equitarian Initiative

Dr. Matt is back in Honduras and working in the same communities as back in February. The past couple of days have been travel days, but today was a field day. Back across the river and up the mountain. We had a limited number of equids today, but it was good to see a few people returning. We treated some sarcoids and wounds, but mainly vaccinated and dewormed. Tomorrow will likely be a busier day. Equitarian Initiative

Many of you know that Dr. Matt takes a special interest in equine dentistry, but did you know he's back in school for it? 📚

Dr. Matt is taking part in a 9 month course leading up to taking membership examinations in equine dentistry with the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists. (This is a certification that is not available in the US.) During and after the course, he will have access to some of the leading experts in the world on equine dentistry. Passing the exams will put him into an exclusive group of equine practitioners in the US.

This will expand Dr. Matt's capabilities in extractions, diastema and periodontal disease work, and more. If you're interested in learning more about our dentistry services, just ask!

(Here Dr. Matt can be seen doing an oral exam with an oral endoscope - a specialized camera that goes in the mouth for more complete visualization and documentation.)

One of our amazing employees has put together a free food pantry at the end of her driveway to help those in need during these uncertain times. We are incredibly proud of her initiative, and would like to help her spread the word! In addition, if you would like to donate any nonperishable food or toiletry items to the cause we will have a box at the office for easy collection. If you or someone you know is experiencing food scarcity, please don’t hesitate to reach out to either the food pantry directly or you can DM us here and we will get the message out.

The pantry is back out! Will be pulled in at dark ❤️
