Tom & Desiree's Pet Sitting

Tom & Desiree's Pet Sitting The Johnstown area alternative to the traditional kennel, in your home & neighborhood! You'll be part of the family too. as well as be licensed, etc.
(4)

Since we were 7 years old, we've had and cared for cats, dogs, and birds. There's always more than one "furbaby" in our home. We both have years of experience caring for pets and have always been animal lovers. Currently we have 2 huskies (Kanan & Angel), a giant malamute (Steele), a Pitsky (B.B.), and 4 sassy cats (Dixie, Toralei, Boo, & Maize). In the past, we've had rabbits, a snake, and fish a

s well. We love the outdoors and walks with our pack (and maybe your pack soon, too!). We've trained all our dogs in regular obedience and some puppy training. In the past, we've also litter trained rabbits, as well as our cats. Our goal is to help you and your babies feel like family, give you peace of mind and comfort, as well as a much more personalized and warm pet care experience than traditional pet care services, while you have to be away. We hope to see you soon and have you become part of our "pack" as well! Pet care is very important to us and a large part of our schedule is dedicated to it. We strive to be very flexible to meet all your pet care needs! 😊

Pets are never left unattended indoors or out, while under our care. We have lots of different dog (and cat!) toys that we offer as needed to stimulate your pets mind and get them to have fun. We do play time and different activities to wear them out and get good exercise. Your pet will be treated like family (and royalty!) while they are cared for by us. We love all of our clients pets as if they were our very own. They will get a ton of attention and care, when they are under our watch! Your furbabies will experience much, much more personalized attention and care than traditional pet care services, when they are with us! They literally become "part of the family" with us. 😊

In order to book with us, we do require that your pets be up to date with all their required vaccinations (rabies, etc.) as applicable by law and have received current flea and tick treatment. We do not service any pets that are known to be aggressive or have hurt humans or other pets in the past. We also are insured and bonded through the Business Insurers of the Carolinas, have enhanced background checks and clearances, are certified in pet CPR/first aid, and have CPS-DW certification for extra peace of mind and to ensure you receive five star, expert pet care each time! We are also members of Pet Sitters International and are accredited with the BBB. Let us know ahead of time if your pet has any special needs or requirements, medical care needs, allergies, etc. and we will do everything in our power to accommodate you and your pet! We like to do an initial meet and greet and ask you some routine questions about you and your pet. I seek to make this experience as smooth as possible for you and your pets, as well as gain your trust and hopefully a lifelong friend!

While we often talk dental health for cats and dogs, other pet types aren't as frequently discussed. As PetMD notes, "Just like humans, dogs, and cats, routine dental care is essential to maintaining a horse’s health. Most veterinarians will recommend a dental exam once to twice yearly, depending on the age and lifestyle of the horse."

Dr. Jennifer Rice explains everything horse owners need to know about equine dental health, including recommended upkeep schedules and common dental problems.

21 items you need in your dog first aid kit!

Pet First Aid Awareness Month offers a good reminder to be prepared for situations that may require pet first aid. It's important that pet sitters—and pet parents—have a pet first aid kit fully stocked and readily available.

If you don't have a dog first aid kit, you can make one. Dr. Buzby lists her top 21 "must haves" and explains how to use each item.

🐾 April is also Stress Awareness Month, and we're dedicated to ensuring our furry friends stay calm, happy, and stress-free!

Animals can feel stress as much as their pet parents, whether it's due to separation anxiety, loud noises, or changes in routine.

Here are three ways pet sitters help reduce stress in animals:

⏰ Establishing a Consistent Routine: Animals thrive on routine, so maintaining consistency in feeding times, exercise schedules, and play sessions can help them feel secure and relaxed. Pet sitters should strive to replicate the pet's normal routine as closely as possible to minimize stress.

🤗 Provide Comfort and Reassurance: Spending quality time with pets, offering gentle petting, soothing words, and cuddles can provide comfort and reassurance, especially in the absence of their owners. This helps alleviate separation anxiety and promotes a sense of security.

🥎 Engage in Enrichment Activities: Mental stimulation and physical exercise are essential for reducing stress in pets. Pet sitters can engage animals in interactive games, puzzle toys, or short walks to keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Enrichment activities not only help alleviate stress but also prevent boredom and destructive behaviours.

We go the extra mile to provide a soothing and nurturing environment for your beloved pets. From comforting cuddles to engaging playtime, we tailor our care to meet the unique needs of each furry companion. 🐶🐱

National Scoop the P**p Week is observed from April 24 to 30 every year. It's a public awareness campaign that encourages pet owners to clean up after their dogs and promotes responsible pet ownership. The initiative aims to keep public spaces and environments clean, prevent the spread of diseases, and promote a positive image of dog ownership.

Remember, scooping the p**p is essential for maintaining a healthy and safe community for everyone!

Why you should not induce vomiting in cats...
While hydrogen peroxide is often included in dog first aid kits and may be used to induce vomiting in dogs at home (for specific situations), the latest protocols are that you should never induce vomiting in cats at home. This Pet Poison Helpline article shares why vomiting should not be induced in cats and explains why hydrogen peroxide is dangerous to cats.

Inducing vomiting in pets when hazardous substance is ingested can be a necessary way to extract the substance from your pet’s system. Only trained medical professionals should induce vomiting in your pet. Many people are familiar with this practice, but it is important to know the potential risks...

National Dog Fighting Awareness Day is a day to shed light on one of the cruelest forms of animal abuse - dog fighting. Although strides have been made to protect dogs legally from being used by malicious people there is still much to be done to stop dog fighting from occurring.

Spotting the signs of potential dog fighting could be key to saving countless animals’ lives and preventing future crimes. Look for signs such as:

- Mangled ears
- Docked tails
- Dogs on heavy chains or tethered up
- Dirt rings around where the dog is being kept
- Dogs chained inches apart from one another
- Facial scaring and puncture wounds around their face, head, neck, chest or limbs

If you suspect a dog is being used in dog fighting you can be their voice by contacting your local police department and animal control agency.

This week is National Dog Bite Prevention week, which is a project of the National Dog Bite Prevention Week Coalition.

As a pet parent, keep these tips in mind to help prevent dog bites this week—and all year long:

1. Share information about your dog’s history with your pet sitter. If you are using the services of a professional pet sitter or dog walker, remember they are tasked with keeping your pet safe and with trying to avoid problems when they encounter other people or pets. Let your pet sitter or dog walker know about any aggressive tendencies your dog has shown before, anything that stresses or freaks out the dog, and any other relevant information.

2. Do not interact with a dog without permission. Dog lovers may be tempted to pet any dog they encounter, but they should exercise restraint. Many pet sitters don’t allow interaction with the pets in their care, so ask before approaching any dog.

3. Keep your dog on a leash and stay alert. If you are walking your dog, make sure to obey all local leash laws, and understand that even where off-leash walking is permitted, it can be dangerous. Off-leash dogs can present a danger not only to a dog in a pet sitter’s care, but also to the pet sitter. The off-leash dog could even be the victim if it runs up to a dog that does not want to socialize.

As any pro pet sitter or dog walker will tell you, running a pet-care business is NO JOKE!

Here at PSI, we always say that pet sitting isn’t for the faint of heart🖤—and on a day that typically focuses on jokes, we want to stop and thank professional pet sitters and dog walkers for the serious work they do!

⭐For any who have ever wondered, “Is pet sitting (or dog walking) a real job?” The answer is ABSOLUTELY.✔

👉Professional pet sitters and dog walkers are small-business owners—vital contributors to their communities and local economy.

👉They have a business license (where required), pay taxes, are insured, bonded, and trained in pet care and pet first aid.

👉They work year-round to ensure pet parents can have the peace of mind offered by quality, reliable pet care when long work hours or travel keep them from their beloved pets.

⭐Being a professional pet-sitting or dog-walking business owner is more than dog walks and cat cuddles.

👉Ask any professional pet sitter who has missed holidays with their families, extended pet-sitting visits to ensure an ailing pet was comforted or felt the loss of a client’s pet passing.

👉Or better yet, ask one of the hundreds of thousands of pet parents who benefit from the services of professional pet sitters and dog walkers every year.

👉Ask the pet owner who was alerted by his professional pet sitter that his dog’s behavior was unusual and recommended an emergency vet visit—saving the dog from dying from canine bloat.

👉Ask the pet parent who was able to call her pet sitter at 2 a.m. when she learns that her mother—on the other side of the country—has been admitted to the hospital in critical condition and is able to secure pet care as she rushes to the airport.

👉Ask the family whose professional pet sitter has graciously agreed to sit with them as their 15-year-old cat with late-stage chronic renal failure has to be euthanized.

Spend a day with a pro pet sitter or dog walker and you’ll know what those of us at PSI know without question:

♥Pet sitting is no joke! It’s a career…a lifestyle…a passion.♥

THANK YOU to the pet sitters and dog walkers making the world a better place for pets and their people!
