Helping Groom
Rotate Horses

Help with tidying horse trails
Routine fence checks

Just like you take your horses boots off after your ride so they don’t cause damage…
do the same with your thoughts at the end of the day.
Remove them from your brain.
Do not let them sit and cause you to overheat
Hang em’ up on God’s saddle and trust that he will take care of them and wash them clean when needed.
Give it to God and move onto to your next ride!

I've been watching the videos and clips from my two equine massages yesterday. I love how expressive horses are and how they each accept things differently.

Piglet was restless, danced around, and moved off the pressure a lot (sometimes that is a reaction to pain and sometimes it's because we spend a lot of time asking them to move off pressure). BUT Piglet is the one who wrapped his head around and gave me the sweetest show of gratitude as he came to accept that my touch was for him and his benefit.

Chubs was stoic and stood like standing was his job. I was surprised by how his muscles melted like butter under gentle pressure. His releases were obvious with big yawns, loud licks, and flatulence.

Have I mentioned that I love what I do?!

Because the love and healing and companionship horses offer has been a blessing from God and giving back to them brings me a deep sense of peace.

Fish is such a good boy and it was an honor to work with him. Here are some before and after shots. (I'm no pro with a camera.)
The change in him as I worked each section and progressed through the massage was obvious. I loved watching his nose wrinkles slowly fade until they disappeared.

I saw the benefits of equine massage firsthand when I was a teenager. I rode a little Palomino gelding - Dreamer. (More than rode, he was my best friend.) He was well-muscled from all the riding we did.

So well-muscled that we thought he was made of rock. (We rode up and down the mountains of Colorado, so we really thought he was just in top shape.)

He started seeing a chiropractor because he was struggling to catch a left lead, and through a process of elimination and professional help, we determined it was not (in this case) a training issue.

The trouble was, he wouldn't hold an adjustment for long. Sometimes not even 24 hours. Our chiropractor (there weren't as many equine practitioners so many years ago) was traveling over the mountains to come to treat our horses. So we could only get him adjusted weekly.

This is where massage came in. We had a certified equine massage therapist start coming once a week, too. I watched my horse visibly soften in the eye and in his body. He was no longer rock-hard. He was supple.

That equine massage therapist help work out places where he was bracing and sore, and because of her work, Dreamer's body was able to accept his chiropractic adjustment and hold it.

That was the first time I recognized that the body needs to be treated as a whole and that combining therapies maximize benefits. Now, I get to offer equine massage therapy so other horses can experience the relief that Dreamer received.

Unfortunately, in rural areas, there are too few providers to meet the demand of mental health needs. Sometimes it is due to a lack of funding, other times, areas may simply not have the facilities and trained professionals available for people to access.

Supporting programs incorporating horses for mental health services can be a solution. Many of these programs are located in rural areas because they take place on farms with horses. Additionally, involving horses can help reduce stigma and cultural barriers to mental health care.
