Safe sleep is SO important when you have a dog and a baby. It's so easy to fall into old habits, but it's unsafe to have a loose dog in the same space as parents and a baby who are asleep. It's impossible to adequately watch your dog or baby when you are asleep.

In this photo, the dog is safely contained in a crate in the parent's room for sleep time. This way, the whole family can be together, but everyone will be safe. Note - this dog has been crate trained and is not worried about the noises that baby makes.

Edited to add: crate training is a process and takes time. If it is an absolute no go for your dog (or you), there are options. If your dog is stressed by baby or the crate, then we don’t want the dog to feel trapped. You could also have the dog sleep outside the bedroom where pup can take the space he needs to feel comfortable. The point remains the same - a dog should have NO access to a sleeping baby. Also, this photo does not demonstrate safe sleep for the baby. The bassinet should be 1 foot away from the bed.

Bodine is looking for her new furever home as she has retired. She has her 4th birthday today! She is spayed, house broken and good with other large dogs. She is about as sweet as the day is long. Let me know if you’re interested.

We first posted Rob here well over a month ago and we are shocked he didn't get more interest in this handsome young man! Rob's ideal home would have another large dog for him to play with. Older kids would be just fine. This boy is a snuggler! Click the link to read more about him. Please message with any questions, it's too easy to miss those in the comments.

Let the dog come to you

🛇 Use your Manners! 🛇
The Sniff test - Stop doing that!
The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of what they're actually doing.

🚩When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions.

🚩If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed.

🚩People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you.

🚩Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction.

🤔 If you are meeting a dog, what should you do?
⚠Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again.
⚠Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side.
⚠Ignore the dog & talk to the owner.
⚠Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats.

🐶This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.

"Heads Up Pet Parents if You're Feeding Your Pets Store-bought Jerky Treats!!⚠️

( )

A new veterinary study published in the journal of Tierärztliche Praxis found that dogs are still developing a kidney disorder called Fanconi-like syndrome when fed pet jerky treats.

Fanconi is a disorder of kidney function that results in excess excretion of glucose, electrolytes and amino acids in urine. Signs of the illness included decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, polydipsia and polyuria.

This new study isn't actually new news to veterinarians, in 2007, veterinarians became aware of Fanconi-like signs in multiple other dog breeds without a recognized genetic predisposition, and alerted the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, prompting an investigation. The chief suspect then was found to be commercial jerky treats.

As of today, the FDA has received approximately 5,200 complaints of illnesses associated with consumption of chicken🍗, duck🦆, or sweet potato🍠 jerky treats. The reports involve more than 6,200 dogs, 26 cats, three people, and include more than 1,140 canine deaths." - Rodney Habib

What type of dog water bowl do you use? 🐶💧

The dog water bowl has previously been identified as the third most contaminated🦠 item within the household and can be a breeding ground for dangerous germs & life-threatening bacteria🧫 that can put the entire house at risk, researchers at University Centre Hartpury have revealed.

So, which dish is best to use for a dog water bowl? The bowl that grows the least amount of life-threatening bacteria!

In the first study of its’ kind, Hartpury scientists found stainless steel grew the least amount of bacteria and over time, plastic bowls grew the highest amount, but the shocking part was the most harmful bacterial species (including salmonella, E. coli and MRSA) were most frequently identified in CERAMIC bowls!

Lead can also be a problem when using ceramic bowls, and the endocrine disrupting chemicals found in plastic bowls are a no-go! Also be aware plastic bowls🥣 can cause Plastic Dish Nasal Dermatitis🙀: Chemicals in plastic absorb through the skin and inhibit the synthesis of melanin, leaving the nose👃🏼 and adjacent areas with pink blotches.

So stainless steel🍴 bowls are the safest, right?

Well not so fast…. there’s even been recalls on stainless bowls😫. In our upcoming The Forever Dog book, in the chapter titled Environmental Impact and the section labelled “Toxic Toys, Chews, and Beds", we cover how to choose the best chemical-free bowls🚫 that won’t leach contaminants over time. They are super stressed by their e-collars. Every tool can be used wrong even a regular collar and leash. Not ever dog needs a e-collar and they must have a strong obedience foundation before one is ever put on them.

Without E-Collars for Jack and Clover they would be on a leash anytime they went outside, but with it they are allowed freedom to truly run and be dogs

Got on my soap box this morning about ecollars for dogs. Here is my comment below, this is where I stand after talking to dozens of trainers, reading ALOT of research, and books, seeing good and bad techniques and the dogs that they were used on.

"And these thought processes, and people using ecollars incorrectly are why they have such a bad reputation, getting banned, etc... Even a collar and leash isnt force free and can be used incorrectly and cause harm (throat damage, cherry eyes). Good trainers will tell you they actual hardly use them, they allow the dog freedom to be a dog and it is used like someone tapping you on the shoulder to get your attention at 100 yards away. Is it fair and just to have a dog that is breed to run, sniff, hunt on a leash 24/7? The answer is NO if your wondering. A dog fully trained in obedience before a ecollar ever goes on it is a happier dog that enjoys way more freedom than your dog on a leash or a backyard. People need to educate themselves, don't rely on social media, information from 10 years ago, or even 5 years ago. I used to be against them, thought all these things people are saying until I went to experts, saw alot of dogs good and bad. If your dog doesn't have a solid obedience foundation, DO NOT PUT a ecollar on it, a dog under 6 to 9 months of age (depends on each individual dog) has no business with a e collar on it. And some dogs do great and are wonderful and will never need that tap on a shoulder. If you are thinking of using a ecollar for a reactive dog, seek professional help, there are techniques that can be used only by the right trainers. I highly recommend people learn dog body language as well it will save you so much in vet bills and you can stop problems before they start. I will get off my soap box, and you can put sad, mad faces or whatever, I do not need your approval in my life."
