A 25-year-old Hilo man who pleaded not guilty Friday to second-degree murder and fi****ms offenses for the Feb. 19, 2025, shooting death of 36-year-old Brandon Castillias in Waiakea Uka was already sitting in jail when indicted last week, unable to make $1.06 million bail for a separate but apparently unrelated attempted murder charge.

Joe Rogan endorsed Donald Trump in 2024. This week, on the biggest podcast in the country, he kept asking the same question about the president: how is this legal?

What set him off sounds invented. Trump is charging up to $100,000 a month to let people read his official government announcements before the rest of the country can.

His guest, comedian Shane Gillis, said it in three words: "literally insider trading." Rogan just stared. "Who's telling him this is a good idea?"

Here's what they were reacting to. Trump Media, the company Trump owns a bigger piece of than anyone else, built a product called Truth API that sells a head start on his Truth Social posts.

And his posts are not lunch photos. They move markets. Tariffs, firings, military strikes, threats to the Fed. He's put out between 9,000 and 11,000 of them since taking office, and often there's no White House announcement to match. His feed is the news.

So follow the money. Wire the fee and you learn what the president is about to do to the economy a beat before everyone else, then trade on it. Can't afford it, and you find out after your 401(k) already moved.

That's the whole rot. A president is supposed to answer to every citizen the same way. This one turned advance notice of his own decisions into a subscription and pointed the payments at his own company.

Then people with names did something about it.

On Wednesday, The Intercept and the Freedom of the Press Foundation walked into federal court in Manhattan and sued to kill the scheme, arguing the Constitution doesn't let a president paywall equal access to his public words.

Congressman Jamie Raskin, who'd already opened an investigation, put it cleaner than any headline: "the depraved essence of insider trading."

And remember what this actually is. Truth Social reported a $238 million loss last quarter. Selling the country's most sensitive advance information isn't a flex of power. It's a failing company strip-mining the one asset a sitting president should never be able to sell.

The reply from Trump's camp to getting sued for this? They called the lawsuit an attempt to "weaponize the courts to censor him."

Even the man who put him in office wanted to know who talked him into it.
