Dogs need daily exercise...but they don't need daily walks!
If taking your pup for a walk today isn't practical, here are 5 awesome alternatives (modelled by the very bouncy 🙂):
1) Play tug. If your pup isn't super keen, the trick here is to let them win! Release while they are pulling - just the first or second tug at first then build up how long you 'compete' for the toy before letting her pull it from your hand 😁
2) Play fetch! Retrieving games are a great way to exercise your pup if you aren't able to walk far yourself, or need to keep them restricted to a yard. You can even retrieve indoors. Carefully. 😉
3) Make a kibble trail. Take a handful of their daily kibble allowance and lay a trail for them to follow. Make sure they are shut somewhere else while you lay it! Keep it simple at first, and make it harder if they enjoy the game!
4) Teach them to quarter. This one is a little harder - and involves a bit of running for you, to start with. But teaching your dog to run long stretches from left to right 'across' your path, while you walk slowly forwards, is great fun. And really wears them out. Hunting breeds like spaniels take to this one especially well. ❤️
5) Do extra training sessions! Keep sessions short and positive, so they stay fun and stimulating for your pup. If you don't want to do more on the basics, use this time to teach tricks. It's entertaining for both of you - and a great way to practice you training skills too 😁
Have you got any other suggestions for ways to exercise a pup on a 'no walk' day? We'd love to hear them! ❤️
