Dahlia is such a joyful, fun-loving gal! She took 30 minutes to eat her 1 frozen shrimp cause she played with it and savored it so long 🥰 she loves curling up on laps for a belly rub and is always down to go explore and meet new people, dogs, and places. Teaching the pups some impulse control as well as a release word. We’re in the beginning steps of this but they’re all doing great!
Reinforcing and practicing “stay” with Miss Darcy while little Maggie plays some frisbee. We roll the frisbee at this age to prevent pups from jumping and potentially injuring joints. Rainy day exposure! It may seem simple, but to the puppies, everything they encounter is brand new. It’s important to expose them to events and situations that they will encounter in their day to day life. One day their forever families will ask them to go potty in the rain, or go on a walk in the rain, etc and we want the pups to do so willingly and without a thought. Once they got their feet wet, the pups loved running around and later came inside wet, tired, and content.

Novelty: this can take many forms, a new toy, a new food/small or experience, etc. some days novelty is given to individual pups other days it’s a novelty as a collective. Novelty not only exposes them to newness and empowers them to be adventurous and love the unknown, it also helps them recover quickly when they are afraid and learn to cope with newness well.

We love hosting watch parties. It’s important that our pups are desensitized to sounds of everyday life which includes loud cheering and sudden movement during sporting events (similarly it could be a kid jumping up screaming and running). This type of event can be startling or even scary for pups if not properly introduced to it. Socializing a puppy is more than meeting other dogs and people, it includes exposure to aspects of life that will occur regularly in your life so they are comfortable and thriving within it too!

Puppy Weaning! ⬇️⬇️⬇️
We began weaning our pups slowly over the last week or so. We started with goats milk. The pups got to “experience” goats milk first as it’s easier for them to digest than cows milk.
I say experience because prior to this, their only understanding of “food” was mommas milk. Having something they can eat be in a bowl or on a plate is a crazy concept for them. They walk all over the bowl, slip in it, lick it off their siblings back, etc. it’s quite the show. We have to show them how to find it by putting a little on our finger and letting them lick it and slowly moving our hand to the bowl so they begin licking the milk.
After their first goats milk, we waited 24 hours to see how they digested it. We then added mashed potatoes. Just a little bit added to the goats milk. Enough for them to experience texture. We then waited another 24 hours for digestion. Following the same method we added other various small ingredients.
We’re intentionally giving them items for their gut to experience and later in life hope these pups will be less picky eaters, and have a much better gut biome. In this video the pups are getting meat for the first time. Beef is the easiest for them to digest first and is why we start with it.
Also we’re not overly concerned with giving them a balanced diet yet because Darcy is still nursing them and the primary source of their food (and her milk is balanced for her). We’re just focused on their new food experiences and setting their guys up for success!
