Wayside Waifs needs foster families for shelter animals who need a break from shelter life. Shelter life can be stressful for the animals. Sadly, some animals are starting to exhibit signs of extreme shelter stress and need a change of environment to help ease their stress and anxiety.

About 15-21 dogs are housed in Wayside's Canine Behavior Center (CBC). The CBC is dedicated to behavioral rehabilitation for fearful/shy/under socialized dogs and high arousal/high energy dogs who are not quite ready to be available for adoption. To help meet their evolving needs, we have several CBC dogs that need a break from the shelter environment and are seeking a foster family. Could you fill this short-term foster need?

Foster families play an integral role with this unique population of dogs, providing a temporary, loving home to those who may have never experienced life with a family before. On average, dogs are in foster for 2-3 weeks. There are several benefits to fostering dogs in your home. It provides vital information on a dog's response to life in a home setting, which really helps us when finding permanent placement with an adoptive family.

Fosters can even help find an adopter for their foster dog, and fostering helps make more room at the CBC for new dogs to begin their own behavioral rehabilitation.

Engage in fun activities like touring the shelter, creating enrichment toys, and participating in interactive games that teach responsibility and compassion for pets.

This educational program not only helps you earn your badge but also gives you the chance to see shelter animals and make a positive impact through projects like reading to the animals and making treats or toys.

Interested in reading to our dogs and cats at Wayside Waifs? Join our Self-Guided Reading Program! After attending a Volunteer Information Session, sign up for a Reading Program Orientation to learn all about how you and your family can help our waifs relax and get comfortable with having people outside of their kennels by reading to them.

Bonus: kids also can work on their reading skills to a non-judgmental listener! Orientations are offered monthly.

Hi, I'm Kulina, and I love everything about life! I'm not only entertaining to my friends at Wayside Waifs, but I also find myself to be very entertaining - as long as stuffies are nearby, of course!
Besides being really fun (and amazing), I am also really smart. I know commands "sit," "touch," and "look."

Oh, and I'm housetrained! I've been told that I'm pretty great.
