and just like that it’s all over

we’ve been at this for long enough now that we’re starting to lose some of the four-legged friends that started it all at our side.

We lost Buzz earlier this year; and yesterday we lost another OG, Hank, to cancer and age.

2023 is shaping up to be a year of closing old doors and opening new ones, As the canine companions that started it all begin to slow down and one by one depart, we’re slowly scaling back training in pursuit of other endeavors.

Our condolences to Hank’s owner, Stephen in Kansas City.

“For me, the e-collar is a forever thing 💞✨ Do my dogs wear their e-collars all day in the house? No. But if they are off leash, they will always wear them. Why? Because there is always a WHAT IF. What if one day my dog decides to blow off my recall and chases a bird towards a road? Cause that’s totally something Finley would do 😂 I have two hard-headed high drive dogs who love to run, so I need some sort of leverage over them for those just-in-case moments. I have peace of mind knowing they are running free but I could still get their attention even at half a mile away. Don’t be in such a hurry to get rid of the tools. If they are working, keep it up 💞☺️”

Dane here has turned out to be a great addition to our Lodge & Learn family. We took him on at a particularly busy time but he’s made it easy to work with him anyway by being a flexible learner. It’s his last week here and we are sure going to miss him when he graduates.

we lost one of the OG Dogs Listen To Us canines recently. Buzz helped to found this company as right hand mutt to his owner David King. The life of a trainer’s dog is a little different than that of an ordinary pet. Buzz helped to positively influence countless other dogs during his lifetime, including service animals for armed forces veterans. He was always good for a laugh. If you worked with David while he was with our company, or later through his own outfit King Canine, you know how much Buzz meant to him. He meant a lot to us all.

We’re seeing a lot of ads for daycare and boarding franchise opportunities. While franchises aren’t always bad, they warrant a little extra caution. These ads are appealing to people looking for a path to successful business ownership and there’s a good chance the owners know little about dog care. Nor will many of them care to. Just play it safe and research where you’re sending your dogs. Pet ownership increased dramatically during the height of the pandemic, but now that people are traveling and going back to work, the market is answering the call for more boarding/daycare options. That’s good, but it’s also going to mean that some bad choices will pop up to capitalize.

Rufus officially graduated from Lodge & Learn last week and went home to his owner. Now that he’s trained he’ll get to join his owner at work both in her campus office and her office on the outer banks. Trained dogs have more rules but because they know they they also get to have more fun.

Rufus has been training in our Lodge & Learn program for three and half weeks. Since she was going to need to board him while she traveled anyway, his owner made the smart choice to feed two birds with one scone, and went ahead and pulled the trigger on some training she’d been hoping to get done for a while. He goes home in just a few days so we’ve visited his owner twice since she returned from Hong Kong this week. One more visit, then a go-home lesson and a follow-up!

there’s no better feedback than a repeat customer. the actual customer I mean. the ones opening up their wallets. it’s maybe not such a great sign if you have a repeat canine pupil. but that’s a thought for another day.

Kreme here is the third pup from her family to start her training straight away with our Lodge & Learn program. Her oldest “sister” Kookie was one of our first canine cadets here in NC, back when we started in durham. Then when we shifted operations to Mebane, her other sister Krisp was one of our first pups there. Now, as we settle into and a new year, we’re joined by this spunky husky. that kind of loyalty from our clients is the lifeblood of this small family business.

All that to say: to all of you who’ve come back to us when you add your pack, we appreciate you mofos

Sean here is a spunky boy from the triangle. He’s taking a working vacation from the ‘burbs for basic training here at our country kennel. We love working with him and can’t wait to get our hands on his sister next!

these two bozos are doing our on-site private lessons. their owners were sure we’d say that Lodge & Learn was the only way. Actually though, if you’ve got the time and commitment, private lessons are a really great option. Especially if you have more than one dog that needs training.

several months ago we got a referral inquiry.
Lauren had endeavored a great deal of diy training with her golden-aussie, Benelli; but she wanted to tighten things up before her wedding to which Beni was to be party.
We created a custom day training program for her and over the course of a couple of months we cleaned up leash walking and her basic “stay” commands.
Benelli graduated as an American Kennel Club
Today we finally got our hands on the beautiful professional photos from the ceremony and we just had to share.

Belated Baloo and fam graduation photo!

Speaking of graduates: we’re opening up our kennel for past clients needing boarding for Christmas/New Years. $35/night. If you’re dog graduated any of our programs, (s)he is eligible for alumni boarding. We have relocated to Tarboro, NC so you’ll have a commute to drop-off and pick-up your pet pal, but we think it’s worth it.
