Self Sufficiency Day 4: Homemade Clothes Washing Soap
1 Bar Fels-Naphta
1 Cup Washing Soda
1 Cup Borax
4 Cups Water-divided
1 reused ziplock, gallon
Hand blender
48 hours

Cut the soap bar into small pea sized pieces. Put into ziplock with 2 cups water and let sit for 48 hours to soften soap.
Put borax and washing soda into large bowl and add 2 cups boiling water. Stir to dissolve. Add soap and blend with hand blender. Texture and consistency will be just like mayonnaise. Keep in plastic container.
To use, add to washer when you would use detergent. About 3-4 heaping teaspoons is for a large wash.
I find the Fels Naphta, washing soda and borax on the lower shelf in the detergent area. Walmart has been consistent so far.

Self Sufficiency Day 3: Solar Powered Clothes Dryer
Use a clothesline for drying clothes instead of that electric gobbling dryer. At least one load will make a difference. All you need is some line, couple of eyebolts and a bowline knot.

Self Sufficiency Day 2: Turn Off The Electronics
Reduce our dependence on electricity for entertainment. Play cards, an instrument, write a journal or do some art. Whichever your choice, it's likely to give you more quality family time and brain activity.

Self Sufficiency Day 1: Making Dried Chili Pepper
Chili pepper is good for the garden and you. Most pests don't like chili pepper and will stay away, a natural insecticide for the garden. For you, it's known to increase metabolism, which is good for weight control. I know a good Luka uncle who says, "Cayenne Pepper will cure everything but stupidity." Sounds good to me! Here I picked peppers off my shrubs and dried on a plate in the window. When they were very shriveled I put them in a coffee grinder. (If they are really dry, the seeds will separate and you can store separately.) This batch wasn't so dry so I put them in a mason jar with a gauzy cloth as the cover so it wouldn't mold.

One of Friends of Honouliuli's goals is to popularize self sufficiency in order to empower our community to rely more on itself verses importing its needs from oceans away. Lets explore ways to keep things local or making things ourselves instead of purchasing from a big brand store. Starting today, 124 days of Self Sufficiency ideas. It takes us to the end of the year and then we'll see if we still have ideas!

NEW PROJECT - ELEPAIO SANCTUARY FENCE ENCLOSURE -
Week of 8/17-8/22 (Mon-Sat) and weekend 8/29 & 8/30 (Sat-Sun) 8:00am-4:00pm
Aloha Friends! If you have been looking to put your volunteer efforts into something FOR THE BIRDS...This is it!!! Rare birds, Intimate Forest, Physically Challenging, Free lunch...this ones got it all! We will be assisting in a concerted effort hosted by the Gill 'ohana (the landowners) in their efforts to improve the forest ecosystem here at Palehua.
During the week of 8/17-8/22 we will be clearing the way for the fence to be installed. This will mostly be with chainsaws and loppers. We are trying to see what days we can get the most volunteers on, so it won't be everyday. Please let me know if you are interested and what day(s) you are available. This is not a project for children or anyone who cannot work on slopes
On the weekend of 8/29 & 8/30 the actual fence will be installed, for this we are looking for individuals to help haul, stretch line, pound poles and clip wire to poles. Again, this is not a project for children or anyone who cannot work on slopes.
We are also looking for extra pole pounders to borrow. If you or anyone you know might be willing to let us borrow, please let me know. It would greatly help.
If you are interested, please let me know and I can give you more intimate details. Mahalo Mahalo Mahalo!
