DFW Pack Leader Dog Behaviorist We are driven by a passion to establish harmony, and strengthen the companionship between us and our dogs. You lead...They Want to Follow.

Behavioral training educates and equips us with the ability to be a healthy leader, effectively communicate, and cultivate lasting companionship. It is through our healthy leadership and positive reinforcement, that we nurture within our dogs, a want to follow and be free within the boundaries we define.

In Pack Leader, we teach that mental stimulation can create physical fatigue. Teaching our pups how to healthily walk on the leash brings harmony to the mental and physical. Harley experienced this while learning how to walk with her mom.
She was thinking so hard, she couldn’t wait to take a nap.😂
Great job Harley!

Say hello to the newest member of the pack Sammy! Sammy gets pretty anxious with being outside with all of the noises and activity, so we worked on not worrying about trucks, lawn mowers, w**d eaters, other dogs, people, and squirrels. Instead we focused on being calm and confident while following leadership. I think I Sammy liked his first session. Strong work Sammy!😊

Sleep is so important and it tells us so much about our dogs. It’s also an essential part of the process of memorizing training and moving it into their long term memory. It’s one reason why we suggest letting your dog take a nap after sessions. 😁

🐕🐾 Dogs, much like humans, need quality sleep for their health and well-being. Here are some interesting facts about dogs and their sleeping habits:

💤On average, adult dogs sleep from 12 to 14 hours per day, while puppies, older dogs, or larger breeds can require even more sleep, sometimes up to 18 hours a day.

💤Dogs experience similar stages of sleep as humans, including the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage, which is associated with dreaming. However, their sleep cycles are shorter. This means they wake up more frequently than humans do throughout the night.

💤Dogs do dream! If you've ever noticed your dog twitching, whining, or moving their paws while sleeping, they're likely in the REM stage of sleep, possibly chasing squirrels in their dreams.

💤Dogs' sleeping positions can reveal a lot about their personality and comfort level. For example, a dog sleeping on their back with their belly exposed feels very safe and comfortable, as this position is the most vulnerable. A dog curled up in a ball might be trying to conserve warmth or protect themselves.

💤Like humans, dogs can snore, especially those with short nasal passages like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Boston Terriers. While often normal, excessive snoring can sometimes indicate a health issue and might warrant a vet visit.

💤Changes in a dog's sleeping patterns can be an indicator of health issues. Sleeping more than usual could signal problems such as depression, diabetes, or hypothyroidism, whereas sleeping less could indicate issues like discomfort, pain, or anxiety.

Happy Monday Pack Leader!
You know somtimes our dogs can be pretty sneaky in order to get what they want. Some times it’s cute and other times not so much. For example, when getting in the car, sometimes Pax will act like needs he to go to the bathroom and smell all over the yard just to procrastinate loading up. 😂
In the spirit of April Fools, we’d love to hear about tone when your pup has tricked you.
Don’t worry. It happens to all of us!😂

Good morning Pack Leader!
I meant to post this yesterday but you know…squirrel!
Something to think about this week.
Our dogs thrive on consistency and reward. When they consistently get away with a misbehavior, they still experience a reward. Often our frustration is still processed as attention put towards them and any attention can be seen as good attention. In
those moments stress hormones like serotonin and dopamine make our dogs feel good. Unfortunately, the hormones are attached to only what our dogs did for themselves.

When they consistently follow through with behaviors that we appreciate, they also experience a reward. However, the stress hormones are now attached to what our dogs did WITH us. In those moments we are also producing serotonin, dopamine, AND oxytocin WITH our dogs. The result is an experience of companionship. Instead of working against us, for reward, they begin to more naturally want to work with us. This is another reason why being able to work for our affection is so important.

As you love on your pups this week ask yourself this question. Does my type of consistency teach my pup to feel good working against me or to feel good working with me?
Have a great week and remember, if you lead, they will want to follow!

How important is our dog’s nose?
Our dogs use their nose first, then eyes, then ears. Every time our dogs take a breath, 85-90% of the volume of air the nose takes in, is dedicated to defining their reality. The moisture on the nose is there so that stray particles can be absorbed through the skin and aid in quantifying and defining their world.
If we constantly speak to them like they are humans, then we push them to use their ears over their nose. The result is they take in a very small portion of the information they need and miscommunication is inevitable.

Training tip:
In the beginning of training, use fewer words and use the slip leash inside your home.
Let the leash do the talking!😁

In Pack Leader we define patience in 3 words. Calm, assertive, and persistent. To our pups impatience smells like we are not in control of ourselves and can’t provide their survival. I encourage us all to practice patience.

02/13/2024

It’s important that our pups respect the leash. It’s an extension of our leadership, so respect of the leash is often paired with respecting us as well.

02/13/2024

Building the foundation of healthy companionship often begins with teaching our pups
to sit, stay, come, and heel.
Which part of the foundation do you need help with?

02/09/2024

It can be very frustrating and dangerous when our pups counter surf. When they are hyper focused on food, then our leadership is non existent in their minds. It’s vital to teach them how to follow our leadership versus the food being the leader.
Great job Cash!

This pic makes us smile from ear to ear.😁
A few years ago Whiskey(right), went through behavioral training and now he is helping us to teach his sister Bluey(left), how to build companionship with the family. We are so excited to see how well Bluey does!

It’s so rewarding for us to come back years later and see that healthy behavior is still in place and being passed down to the new family members. Strong work to Whiskey and the family!

Good Monday morning! We love what we do and we love to start the week off with a great review!
Hobie and his PLs became new students this past weekend. We are so excited to be a part of their journey. Welcome to the pack!

If you need help with behavior and building companionship with your pup, we would love to be a part of your journey as well. We offer virtual and in home sessions. Let’s talk!

It’s been roughly 10 years since Julia McKinney and I first met at her first dog resort. She hired Pack Leader and we worked together in creating a safe environment for the dogs and people, trained her employees in how to lead the dogs healthily, and built in processes that helped to make daily business operations smooth and efficient. Fast forward to now and we’re back at it again!
One of the things we love about Pack Leader is that over the years so many of Pack Leader’s clients become more like family. Once again thank you Julia for letting us be a part of the Canine & Co. Dog Resort family and thank you
For being a part of the Pack Leader family!

Play mode is so important for healthy psychology and strong companionship. As long as there is trust and respect in place it can be turned on and off pretty quickly. 😁

This is the first time Lauri Blum Adams and Chief have practiced an off leash heel in the Ronald McDonald House Fort Worth. We love the way Chief checks in with Lauri as they walk. Y’all have come so far and we couldn’t be more proud of y’all!😁

If you’re looking for some help with your pup’s behavior, then please call, text, email, or message us. We are more than happy to help!

New student alert!
Say hello to Millie everyone! She’s new to Pack Leader and will be learning how to walk on a leash, socialization, sit, stay, come, and heel, reduce anxiety, build confidence with environmental stimulants, improve her recall, and strengthen her companionship with her Pack Leaders. We are so excited to be working with she and her family. She’s so adorable and rumor has it she loves snuggles.😂

One of the things we believe in, is that it’s important that our dogs see our kids as leaders as well. Depending on how you teach, even an infant can be seen as a leader. Regardless of age we encourage you to let your kids be involved with training your dogs and let your dogs be involved with “training” your kids. 😆

If you’d like some, tips, ideas or exercises don’t hesitate to reach out to us directly, or check out our Pack Leader 101 Ebook on the website.

08/18/2023

In our experience one of the major causes of misbehavior in our dogs comes from our own mindset. Just about every dog owner we’ve worked with loves, their dogs but struggles with “obedience”. The two are often separated both in the owners mind and in the rhythms, routines, and overall quality of life in the home.
I’d like to introduce a thought reversal. Instead of thinking along the lines of obedience and love, let’s weave them into leadership and companionship. In this space love, trust, and respect is a 2 way street which results in long term behavior, versus short term obedience.
For years Pack leader has been developing and shaping these behavioral concepts into the creation of our Pack leader 101 Ebook. It’s a fantastic tool that will help you to know and understand how your dog sees their world, shape healthy behavior, and build lasting companionship.

We believe it’s a game changer and we highly encourage you to go to dfwpackleader.com and check it out.

Thank you DFW DogWatch Hidden fences for the reminder!

Heat stroke, or hyperthermia, happens when your dog’s internal temperature rises above their normal 103°. A temperature of 106° results in heat stroke and anything over 107° can mean organ failure and even death.

Here are the common signs of heat stroke and how to prevent it. Share with you fellow pet parents! 🐾

Much of what we do in Pack Leader comes down to building and strengthening companionship with our dogs.
Unfortunately, I can get so “busy” sometimes, that I don’t think about the overall impact that healthy companionship can have. It’s in these little “Easter egg” moments that I am reminded how equally important it is for both us and our dogs.
