I posted this on IG last month and received some negative feedback. We desperately need a change in perspective with regard to retired K9’s. There is no excuse for what’s happening. I’m not picking on vest fundraising! There is definitely a need for quality gear and most PDs are forced to fundraise to get it. It’s a worthwhile effort and I fully support it. The dogs are valuable members of the force and deserve the best protection money can buy. 👉BUT, The value of a dogs life does not end with the job! Here’s the problem. If the dog doesn’t get to retire with its handler, it has nowhere to go. Options are extremely limited for bite trained dogs. Euthanized/indefinite confinement or a rescue with appropriate skilled staff. VOLUNTEERS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE HERE! WELL MEANING AND GOOD INTENTIONS ALONE ARE A RECIPE FOR DISASTER. The risk of negative affecting interactions is incredibly high. Not just a bad bite but inadvertently reinforced behaviors and the stress levels can and will affect all the dogs and the entire staff. If you’ve ever been around one that wasn’t happy, you know what I’m talking about. They will make sure you know. We need the same kind of passion for new dog gear working towards retired dogs care. We need a network of people working together. The entire industry needs to be involved. An army working to protect these dogs just like they protected us.
