Our resident ravens, Edgar & Mrs. Poe … I haven’t been coming here for the nine years. I have been here… I know they’re the same ones because it has a limp… One year he had an injured and we kept him in our rehab cage two weeks while he healed, we fed him chunks of raw steak and hamburger, we had to feed the whole family because they didn’t go far and that included Mrs. Poe and at that time 3 young’uns 💘

This is why we do what we do
We push ourselves, our energy, our resources, and our finances to the limits - the tragedies of dogs in shelters only illustrates a minute part of the tragedies - so many horses are neglected and emaciated and sent to slaughter, shelters are euthanizing pigs that rescues committed to and many more are in horrid situations waiting to be rescued, the cat rescues are also overwhelmed - humanity is almost a token word with all the s**t happening to animals - we are doing our best to keep up - can you do your part? Any little effort will help.🥺🥺

GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN. Sadly, these dogs were euthanized by OC Animal Care in April/May 2024. These are not the severely injured or ill dogs, or those that had been declared dangerous or vicious. The dogs pictured here were healthy but mostly scared and confused. Most were waiting to see a familiar face who would bring them home but that never happened. They listened to other dogs crying, howling, and barking day and night. Many were never allowed outside of their kennels for exercise or just to obtain a break from their noisy kennels. How could they ever relax and acclimate to this unfamiliar and scary environment? But nevertheless, all dogs are expected to toe the line and become tail wagging friendly in a matter of days. It only takes a side eye glance, a growl, a bark, to land them on the shelter euthanasia list. If they were brought to the shelter 'kicking and screaming" or biting their catch pole, those notations were always written in their behavior notes and held against them. Some were rescued from tragic living conditions only to be brought to the shelter and killed. Each dog had their own, often sad, background story.
We honor each one of these dogs. RIP

OC Animal Care recently promoted from within a new shelter director, Monica Schmidt. “My career has been all about helping animals in need, and that’s what this team at OC Animal Care does best,” said Monica Schmidt. “I look forward to this next chapter as Director of OC Animal Care and what we can achieve as a municipal shelter, working together with the community, toward the shared goal of improving the lives of people and pets in Orange County.”

We are still waiting to see a positive change in the running of OC Animal Care.

RIP our very special girl MISSY - my favorite feisty girl - we were given the privilege of caring for her when Ironwood Pig Sanctuary took her out of a a bad living condition and added her to our IW fosters - we believe she prob had extensive cancer - we kept her comfortable in her last days — we miss her and will think of her always 🥺 - thank you Ironwood Pig Sanctuary

MEDICAL FUNDRAISER - goal $1000:
Our little 7 y/o pot belly, Johnny, needs a dental - one rear tooth is bad and needs to come out and the 2 bottom tusks keep growing up into the roof of his mouth - we get them trimmed, but they grow faster than the farrier gets here sometimes so they need to come out 🤦🏻‍♀️

Our little PeeWee was in a shelter from the age of 3 yrs to 8 yrs because bc he was a biter…he’s been doing great since I’ve had him for 2 years after a few incidents early on, but he had to have another bath and nail trim this past weekend …I think the Xanax (from the vet) used to calm him for that backfired - he was muzzled but prior to muzzle and bath and I got nailed… I guess he is still pi**ed because tonight I accidentally startled him and got totally nailed… I still love him lots and he’s not going anywhere… this is not meant to toot my horn, but you cannot condemn the animals, for what’s happened to them in the past… He’s usually a very good boy, somehow, I triggered something… We will repair it and go on… moral of the story is don’t dump your animals, you’ve made a commitment for life…

Wish me luck - I’ve got 4 roosters (luck of the draw from the chicks we got) in a coop and now they are fighting - esp picking on one and drawing blood - I’m going out to move the one getting picked on and the biggest trouble maker now that it’s dark and they are roosting - wish me luck!!!

RUDY is coming home - I adopted him from Susan Olszewski Callahan who rescued him from a terrible situation and I placed him on loan as a companion horse in a home 3 yrs ago where one of 2 older horses died and the remaining horse was lonely and depressed…he has done great, but unfortunately, the other horse died at about 35 yrs old….RUDY is about 26 yrs old now and a very sweet guy - he will be here with us at Red Feather Ranch Sanctuary permanently now….
