NYSHC is having a Membership Drive!

Horses (and carriages) were allowed to use the trails at Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area until late in 2022 when the trails were deemed off limits to horses, and reinforced by Park staff. The reason given was that the list of users did not include horses. NYSHC President Pauline Burnes started communication with the Park Manager, who also manages Stony Brook State Park in February of 2023. I was told that a study of existing trails, and Master Plan for the trail system was in development and that he would keep me apprised of the progress.
The NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has completed a trail system inventory and assessment at Harriet Hollister Spencer State Recreation Area. Parks staff have been evaluating options to create a sustainable trail network based on the inventory and assessment to balance the needs of management and demands of multi-use recreation. Proposed changes to the trail system and consideration of new user groups will be discussed at a public information meeting to be scheduled in late spring 2025.
The New York State Horse Council, Inc. (NYSHC) will be contacted by the Park Manager when the public meeting is formally announced in early 2025. Please complete the linked survey by January 17, 2025 so members of the Trail Committee of the NYSHC can represent the concerns and needs of equestrian trail users.
