DarkHorse Cane Corso was established in 2008. We are a show/working kennel of Cane Corso. As our time in the military comes to an end a new beginning arises.

DarkHorse Cane Corso Kennels, Obedience and Specialty Training are Paula & Andrew Zaro, along with the littles Conner and Olivia and our canine pack. We are originally from Chicago and Boston, but being in the military for the last 8 years has taken us all over the world. DarkHorse Cane Corso is the call sign used for Andrew's unit in Iraq during one of his deployments in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Due to all our travels over the last 7.5 years, it was very difficult to establish a kennel, name or an ongoing obedience training business, and we hope to change that very soon with a permanent move coming next year in the Fall of 2016. Our current kennel is small, and our dogs are first and foremost our pets, though we strive to compete in different levels of obedience, performance and working dog events, at the end of the day, they are our FAMILY. We do not have an outdoor kennel system, nor do we ever plan to. All our dogs past and present live inside with us.

Breeder friends. I need some ideas. My young male whom I planned to sell several months ago will not maintain weight. He is an active dog, when the females went into heat in September he dropped weight. I’ve had blood, urinalysis, f***l, deworming, everything done. Nothing to show. Until this point he was a good weight. He is on a 50/50 split of high quality kibble and raw diet. Anything else I can possibly do? I’m at a loss. It’s been an uphill battle getting weighing back on him where he needs to be since October after the girls heat cycles were over. I just cannot in good faith place him till he’s at a more appropriate weight.

Update:
Some questions I’ll answer so it’s not redundant:

He’s currently eating Mike Ritlan’s Team Dog Elite Blend which is a working dog food. It is 577 calories per cup. He eats 4 cups plus two lbs of raw diet per day.
He does not have diarrhea. Stool is normal, no issues with bowl movements, no constipation.
He is not excessively drinking water or anything of the sort.
He was tested for EPI @ everything was normal.
As were his kidney and liver values. No issues with his red/white blood cells.
F***l smear and float were negative but we treated/dewormed preventatively.
I have tried satin balls and that did not settle well with his stomach, I think it was too rich.

He is excellent with children, good with dogs with proper introduction, raised with cats. Crate trained, house broken. Knows basic commands. Off leash trained. Located in Massachusetts. High prey drive with a decent amount of defense. High food drive. Nice hunt drive for an off-breed. Nice off switch.

He is not free. So if you are looking to adopt this is not the dog for you.

Sire is a now retired show dog, has been titled in sport and is trained in personal protection.

Dam is currently in training to obtain her PSA titles.

Both parents are health tested and have genetic testing via Embark.

Would be a great dog as an intro into protection sports as he already has all of his foundational work for someone looking to compete with an offbreed and get their toes wet in the sport.

He is a serious dog. Working dog thru and thruS this is not a couch potato or a dog you can cuddle with on the couch.

Our Story

DarkHorse Cane Corso is located 55 minutes south of Boston in Plymouth County Massachusetts. Myself(Paula) and Andrew have been involved with the breed since 2008, when we obtained our original male Enzo. Since that time we have grown our kennel and imported some amazing dogs from Serbia and Croatia as well as having bred a few Champions and Grand Champions ourselves. Our current kennel is small, and our dogs are first and foremost our pets, though we strive to compete in different levels of obedience, performance and working dog events, at the end of the day, they are our FAMILY. We do not have an outdoor kennel system, nor do we ever plan to. All our dogs past and present live inside with us. Our puppies are raised inside of our home, whelped(delivered) in our living room where they stay until they are 3 weeks old. They are then moved to the puppy nursery which is a 14 foot by 14 foot indoor enclosure that has matted flooring, toys, a kuranda bed for them to snuggle up on, a 14 foot long by 3 foot wide potty box where the puppies begin litter training. All our puppies are raised with other dogs, chickens and our children. They are socialized with strangers from 3 weeks onwards(family and close friends). Our puppies receive their vaccines at 9 weeks of age and are able to be picked up at 10 weeks old. All puppies are cropped and docked(no exceptions). We health test all breeding stock and work or show them in various dog sports. All our breeding dogs are temperament tested thru the AKC Canine Good Citizen program or other equivalency(Delta Society or American Temperament Testing Society). Most of our dogs used in our breeding program are conformation champions or working on their Championships and may have other titles to include but not limited to Awards of Merit or Excellence, Lure Coursing Titles, Achiever Dog Titles(dogs titled in 3 or more disciplines/fields), Barn Hunt, Farm Dog Certifications, Obedience and Tracking. We strive to maintain proper temperament, health, type and working ability as well as loving family companions and protectors.
