Happy New Year!

We want to provide an update on King and also ask for some help.

Late morning yesterday King was taken to a small, local animal clinic. He wasn't eating much and was lying down unless encouraged to move. They suspected an impaction and did for him what they were able. Once he got home, the problems did not resolve. We waited out the 6-8 hours recommended and then loaded him up to make the much longer trip to the nearest hospital, Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky, where he was admitted as an emergency around 12:30 am.

Their staff immediately did blood work, an ultrasound and began supportive medical treatment. He received IV fluids and additional pain medication throughout the night. There are several items on their differential diagnosis list, impaction remaining one of them, but the cause of his problems is still unknown. A second ultrasound this morning showed some positive changes but his small intestine is still inflamed and there has been no manure passed yet. His heart rate suddenly increased so they passed another tube to check on reflux which was minor. They are also treating him for hyperlipemia which happens quickly when a donkey doesn't eat.

There is a large required payment ($2,000) at this type of facility prior to arriving and the expenses mount up very quickly. The final bill will obviously continue to rise depending on King and the treatment he needs. A potential surgical intervention was mentioned as a possibility but we are taking things day to day based on the doctor's recommendation. If you are able to help, we would appreciate it. Small donations add up and we will need help with this unexpected situation.

King was rescued from the slaughter pipeline along with two other donkeys. One was adopted but the other, Prince, is very dependent on King. This is not easy for anyone, including our wonderful foster in Indiana who didn't arrive home until almost 3:00 in the morning after a stressful, exhausting transport experience. We are truly grateful. Please keep praying for King and his veterinary team.

A very good read.

A very good read.

What does it really mean to "let them go on a good day?"

It means it will be your hardest day. It won't matter if you've never done it before, or if you're gifted a dozen good days, each good day is always the hardest one.

It means they won't know what the fuss is about, why they're getting so many treats and extra belly scratches and hugs.

It means you will second guess your decision right up to the very last moment, the very last breath. You'll second guess yourself afterwards.

They'll knicker at you when you arrive, just like any other day.

The weather, perfect. They are content. They look sound today. They are breathing well, eating well, they get up easily enough from a nap in the sun....the list goes on. Whatever issue they struggle with, today they aren't.

Today you euthanize them.

This is what going on a good day means: sending them out while they are happy, while they are healthy, while they are eating well, walking well, etc. You make the choice to do it before an emergency takes the choice away from you, before your horse has to experience any more trauma or pain.

Their last memory will be filled with love.

It'll rip your heart out every time.

We can see the patterns and the increasing trends. We can predict it a little. We can obsess over the past and worry about the future.

Fortunately, horses, all animals, live in the moment. They don't worry about those things. They aren't worried about winter. They aren't worried about July, or allergies, or progressive diseases like cushings or dsld. They don't think about the close calls they've had before, and they certainly aren't thinking about the close calls that are destined to come, as their body continues to age and break down. They just are. They are happy and healthy, or fearful and in pain, on that day, in that moment.

It is the most difficult, most loving gift we are blessed to be able to give.

And that first ice storm will come, that first deep snow, that first heat wave....and you will find a little relief, no longer doubting the choice you made.

They were happy, and safe, and loved. That is all that matters.

It is never easy. ~Kelly Meister, author

Today is a day of giving! If you're looking to support a truly deserving cause, consider donating to The Farmette. This incredible charity is dedicated to helping lost and unwanted long ears, and it's all made possible by the selfless work of two amazing women and their team of devoted volunteers.

Our little tractor is small but not this small! Usually our Giving Tuesday focus is centered around hay because hay is a constant expense. But this year we would like to use any Giving Tuesday donations to start a new tractor fund.

We currently work with a small 2006 Kubota BX1850 that struggles to keep up with our unreasonable requests! It has a loader, but the tractor is underpowered for much of what we need it to do and we're wearing it out. It's had a ton of good years and gets annual servicing but it is starting to act its age. We've priced several models, both new and used, and there are, of course, several options to consider.

Buying even a small tractor now comes with an automobile price tag! With a few attachments that we would use regularly, the range for a dependable machine is $28,000 - $37,000 depending on the model. A tractor is a genuine need for a rescue that tries to do ourselves as much work as possible. We know that a high fundraising goal can discourage donations but they really do add up when people work as a team, and every single dollar is appreciated. If you'd like to help us start this new tractor fund, donations can be made through PayPal Giving Fund (they don't take a cut), mygivingcircle.org (they don't take a cut), this post, our regular PayPal account, Venmo or by check. Thanks for caring about donkeys!

An Invitation to our annual celebration: Christmas at the Farmette!

It's just about December and it's definitely very cold so it's time to get in the holiday spirit! Come meet the donkeys and horses at the sanctuary in Pipersville!

Join us on Sunday, December 8th at 6:00 PM (OR) Saturday, December 14th at 7:00 PM for a Christmas celebration in appreciation for you and what your support means to us.

Live Christmas music from the hay loft

A Christmas reflection in the barn

Space is limited and reservations are required. PM or email us ASAP with your preferred date, the number of people and the number of vehicles in your group. Car pooling is very much appreciated. The barn is "air-conditioned" -- dress warmly! Children are very welcome but sorry, no pets! Please make a reservation only when you are sure you are able to come. Once we are full, we have to turn people away, so "no shows" take up spaces that others would have liked to have.

This event is our gift to you. Donations will not be accepted on either evening. To make a reservation, please email us at [email protected] with the following:

-- your preferred date
-- the number of people in your party
-- the number of vehicles you need to park

We will confirm your reservation as long as we still have space. Looking forward to seeing you! And a very early Merry Christmas!
