Onaqui, you had me at hello💜 We work so hard for the wild ones that have lost their freedom that sometimes I forget to enjoy why we started all of this in the first place🥰

So yesterday I went all in and from sunrise to sunset had one of the most magical days ever🥳

Of course I already have favorites⚡️ And at one point my emotions feeling their true wild brought me to tears😭 Both happy and sad🥺 Some things should never be tamed😱

And once again the humans the horses bring into my life are just the best🙌 Friends become family and one more joins us today💚

Oh, and I may have tried to learn how to photograph these incredible beings with so much help and actually had fun🤩

Here’s to the people, horses and places that allow us to be completely free to be ourselves and remembering why we should never forget how important this fight is🩵

It may have taken me five years to get here but it will not be anywhere near that long before I get back😍

As my friend KIMERLEE says, “may wild things stay forever free”🖤🩶🤍🤎

💕Five Dollar Friday💕

From Madison yesterday-

Oh, Emmy. The toughest little orphan foal around!
Today, she took her first trailer ride to see a vet. She’s okay, no one panic!

Baby horses have some seriously wonky legs, and we have been monitoring the angle of one of her front legs with vet and farrier correspondence as well. It was time for x-rays, so that’s what we did!

There are many growth plates in their gangly legs as you can imagine, and there are critical periods of growth in which we want to make sure that a baby horse is growing symmetrically and at appropriate angles.

For Emmy- her left leg is just fine. Regarding her right leg- the outside of her right fetlock is growing faster than the inside causing her hoof to angle inward (think pigeon-toed).

Today the vet recommended several non-invasive procedures including rasping her hoof flat on the bottom as well as shock wave therapy to stimulate the tissues on the inside of her leg to grow- which we did! You can see that in the footage I grabbed for you.

Now, we wait. She has a small window of time in which the vet is comfortable to give her a chance to straighten out. If she doesn’t, we have to put her down. JUST KIDDING! Bad joke.
If she doesn’t straighten out, there is a same day surgery procedure where the vet places a screw through the growth plate and then will remove the hardware later on. She would recover at home on the farm and live her normal little life as if nothing happened!

Little one is giving us a run for our money (literally- we need you to donate haaaa), and she is so worth it! Let me know in the comments if you want the play-by-play process as things are unfolding! Stay tuned!

🤍🤎Why Wednesday🤎🤍

Several of you have commented that our stunning Stuart looked so good and wondered why we had to let him go so I thought I would take this time to tell you what I know about how looks can be so deceiving💔 And how stoic horses actually are and how often they silently suffer because they don’t always show their pain😭

But back to Stuart first🩵 Stuart was a highly bred quarter horse who was born with several issues and came to us because of a caring trainer when his owner wanted to let him go when he received a diagnosis at age 3 that would mean he could not show in the Western Pleasure world. One that meant he needed a lot of gentle movement but not hard work. We were a rescue but we also had a lesson program for people of all abilities at the time. This was exactly what Stuart needed. And we unexpectedly got a unicorn🦄 We managed all of his issues for 5 years that were not only costly but keeping him healthy was a constant rehab and we loved doing it! Two years ago he was diagnosed with eye cancer, not uncommon in grey horses with pink eyes so we did the treatment needed and kept him okay there as well. Then last winter, everything got worse and he had a rough winter😔 He was lame and lost a lot of weight. So why didn’t we let him go then? He wasn’t ready🩵 So we went all in to get him healthy again and it worked until early summer when he started having increased pain just being a horse and his eye stopped responding to treatment. So we gave him one last summer of green grass and friends🥳 We commited to not letting him have another bad winter🥶 And he enjoyed every minute while on pain meds and getting extensive hoof care, chiro and acupuncture!! And like many horses who know this is their last summer, his body started looking better and of course we questioned our decision. So Stuart showed us in no uncertain terms it was time and honestly that was gut wrenching as we wondered if we were a day too late😢 We have only had one horse who left in an emergency instead of a “good day” and once you experience it, you will always be more careful😭 So we fulfilled Stuart’s “bucket list” over the last few months, we took forever photos and gave his friend Tucker time to say goodbye and we have no doubt we did the right but hardest thing🤍

I could write a book on how stoic horses are after doing rehab for so long and so much rescue but the most important thing I want you to hear is, they can look okay on the outside and be a mess on the inside😩 So always ask the questions and get more information when you have any concerns!! So many don’t want to know what their horse is really dealing with and we need to change that narrative. Letting horses suffer in silence because you don’t want to know is not okay!! There is always a reason, always!!

Huge thank you to Dr. Whitton at Iron Horse Equine Medical and Surgical Services for always walking us through this journey where we can have the honest conversations so we can always honor the horse🩵💜

Thank you Stacy Cushing McClure for always giving us images of a lifetime to remember our best friends🥺

Our Story

Rehabilitation of any equine, not only involves extensive amounts of time, but also money. We believe that rescue and EAAT (Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies) horses and the organizations that support them deserve a team of people to provide this intensive care. We also believe that team should be compensated for their valuable care. With this in mind we have started a nonprofit to do both. Our goal is to partner with these organizations to help alleviate the extensive vet bills, extra training and complimentary care costs that come along with providing the best chance at full recovery and wellness. Every horse deserves this chance but when it is a nonprofit supporting these special equines it often limits how many services can be provided. Likewise providing these services at no cost limits how much a practitioner can provide. This is where we come in. We will not only be able to provide care at our facility but at the rescue or EAAT center where the equine lives.

Our name comes from the first rescue horse we cared for with the trust of Terolyn Horse Rescue, inc.. Aria was only with us for a few days before she crossed the rainbow bridge and we were all in love with her already. This sweet horse not only gave hugs, she loved to be with people and being in her presence helped us be present and soak in every minute of how lucky we are to work with these amazing creatures. Along with Teri, her staff and volunteers, we all believe Aria came into our lives for a reason and we hope to carry on her legacy by helping other horses like her.
