I'm Brie, and I moved to Klamath Falls when I was 11 in 2004 but my dad grew up here and my Nana was born at the old hospital on Pine Street (which is now the downtown Klamath Open Door) in 1933 so I consider myself a Klamath native. I was in the last 6th grade class at Fairview, and graduated from KU in 2011. I enlisted following graduation and committed to six years in the US Navy, 3 1/2 of whic

h were spent on USS Makin Island as a Fire Controlman. I returned to Klamath Falls at the beginning of COVID to be closer to family, and I've been here ever since. I've wanted to get started in self-sufficiency and when the opportunity landed in my lap to take in 33 5-week-old Coturnix quail, I took the chance. I have learned to raise and process them, and now I am sharing this with all of you to give you access to these quirky little birds and see what fun they can bring to you, either as laying hens or in your frying pan.

I have so many chicks hatching out in the next two weeks and more eggs going into the incubator every day! All 75 eggs currently in the incubator (ignore the chicken eggs) are hatching between the 19th and Sept 1st.

For first time chick owners:

Babies *need* a heat lamp. They need their brooder to be 100° and the heat must gradually be reduced until they're old enough to have their full feathers and survive the outdoor weather. Babies will cuddle up to conserve heat but if you've only got one or two, you absolutely must make sure they are warm.

You also need chick food. If you're only owning a couple of babies, buying a whole bag of feed is overkill. I can provide a gallon bag of chick starter for $5 with your purchase.

You also need a waterer they can't fall into and drown. Coastal and Grange here in town both sell the correct type. You can get the mason jar style, or the plastic quart jar style. They're both safe.

For feeders, I've used the chick feeders, and I've also put down a bowl with food. They like to sleep cuddled up in the bowls and feeders and kick the feed everywhere, so make your choice depending on the amount of mess you can tolerate.

Two 1-day old chicks are going to their new home today and the whole mess of 3 week old chicks are almost ready for their home. 4 have been claimed, I'm keeping all of the remaining white ones but the browns are all available as egg layers, meat birds, and pets!

I'll be offering fresh and frozen meat birds here shortly, stay tuned!

I don't even know what to think about this egg 😯 it came out of the quail coop but it makes the jumbo eggs look like mini eggs!

Keep your fingers crossed it hatches out, maybe I'll have a giant jumbo quail!

One of my girls has spent the afternoon burrowed under the straw bedding. Quail are cute little weirdos, I can't get enough of watching them do their thing!

I can also bring meat roosters but these will need to be picked up around 9 AM so I don't have to listen to them yell all day at work.
