Behind the scenes of owning a floral studio in Klamath Falls- thoughts & musings-
When I need to restock on supplies, vases and bulk flowers (outside of our growing season) I have to go to Portland! Yep! That’s our closest supply center! Many things are too bulky, expensive or fragile to have shipped.
When I had my floral studio in Idaho I could drive about 30minutes. It was the best! And they delivered too!
Now, it’s one day here. Hotel stay. Early morning shopping. Pack the car like a game of Tetris. Drive back home. Restock the studio.
Btw- suppliers aren’t open on the weekends. They also close by noon. Part of the reason we aren’t open on Monday is because we can’t even get fresh flowers for the week until Tuesday.
Every nook & cranny of my suburban is loaded up! Weeks like this are tough on me. I haven’t had a day off yet this month… I may not until we close for the holidays at the end of the year.
It’s strange to me that the biggest floral holidays don’t align with the nation’s local flower growing season. In fact- in the summer, when we have the largest abundance of US grown blooms, flower shops are slowest, so much so that many reduce their hours and some employees take summer off. Maybe we can rally to change these things…. Valentine’s day should happen in August when the flower farms are at their peak!!
I recently received a review from a customer that was surprised by pricing. I imagine she has no idea what it takes behind the scenes to get gorgeous blooms in her hands during winter in our very rural town.
Again- these are just thoughts and facts. A peak on the inside, if you will.
