Photos from a winter walk around the farm today. I saw tracks from deer, squirrels, rabbits, and a river otter family. Signs of beaver were also evident and hundreds of wild birds and ducks.

During these times when all of us soft-hearted people are feeling bad for the wildlife who were not prepared for this weather any more than we were it is important to remember that wild birds and animals can carry lice and mites that are only too happy to enjoy the much larger hosts our chickens offer. I know flocks of blackbirds, sparrows, and other native songbirds are flocking to my chicken pens for both the fresh water I’m bringing them as well as the food stuffs I’m offering them. At night they are sleeping in the barn in the rafters and even alongside the chickens in the perches. As soon as the weather permits, they will all be sprayed with a permethrin based insecticide to control these tiny pests.

Please, please do not treat your birds with DE (diatomaceous earth). It can be very harmful to you and then.

Obligatory “the world is ending” post from Texas. Winter temperatures and snow are making this a rough week. Remember there is beauty even amidst these troubling times.

We’ve had power and water most of the time very consistently. Day-old chicks are staying warm in the house. If you need assistance, please reach out and let us know if we can help.

We have experienced some severe losses outside. White Orpingtons will be unavailable for intentional order as I have lost my male. The hens are in with the Silver-laced males, one of whom is split to White. So white chicks will still be produced and hopefully I can raise up several new males. Seramas will also have a *very* limited availability as they have not handled the temps well at all and many of the breeders haven’t made it.

Farm fresh eggs will be available to those in need in a limited quantity as I’m sure the stores will be out. With temperatures this low eggs are freezing and splitting/exploding in the nests if they aren’t gathered within the hour.

We’re taking water out multiple times a day to give the birds a drink and hoping they are nibbling snow in between water visits. Everyone be safe and know that once we can start hatching we’ll help people to replace birds they have lost.
