CONNECTION VERSUS PROXIMITY

Something I hear from people a lot when they are asking about their horses is "We have a good connection, he's kind of a pocket horse, he follows me everywhere, but..." and they then go on to describe a problem that usually is a result from a lack of connection.

Proximity is not connection.

Clinginess is not connection.

Try not to get connection and physical closeness confused.

Connection is rooted in attunement, which is (as Sarah Schlote of Equusoma: Horse-Human Trauma Recovery puts it) 'the sense of being seen, being heard, feeling felt and getting gotten". It's about them trusting you, trusting you have their best interest at heart, and the feeling of safety you give them when you have proven that you are as aware as the rest of their heard members.

Clinginess is a juvenile behaviour that the mother (and other herd members) allows up until the age of weaning, then they start to work on collision avoidance (a term I picked up reading the works of British ethologist Lucy Rees). Installing collision avoidance is what allows a herd of horses to move safely together at speed like a school of fish or a flock of birds. It's also part of the mental maturation process, and if that process doesn't happen horses tend to retain a that and a lot of other juvenile behaviours.

So beware of the trap of thinking that you have connection because you have constant proximity. It may just be a juvenile behaviour in disguise.

❗️Important Announcement❗️

It saddens me to have to make this announcement but due to a shoulder injury that will likely entail surgery, I will not be able to take on client/training horses for the foreseeable future. As I work through recovery, I will post on my page when my schedule reopens.

Because of this, I will be reaching out to those on my wait list for riding and horsemanship lessons. This is not what I had planned for the future but life happens. I have to allow myself time to heal so I can continue to help horses to the best of my ability!

📣 Important Announcement 📣

Hi everyone! I have an important announcement to share with all my amazing followers, friends, and clients. SEA Horsemanship will be switching gears and focusing on the training of feral/unhandled equine and trauma cases (abuse and neglect). While I have enjoyed working with every horse that has come through my program, my heart lies in the gentling and mental rehabilitation side of this industry. Clients with horses that have training needs outside of gentling/rehabilitation will be considered on an individual basis. In the coming months, I will have a couple openings for feral horses or mental rehab cases. If you are interested in sending a horse to me, please reach out! The BLM is hosting an adoption event at Fall Creek Falls Equestrian end of July if you’re interested in having a mustang gentled!

In addition, I am currently working on implementing my “Horses Helping Humans” program. I look forward to sharing more details in the future!

A potential client asked for video of some of my training results so I made a before and after of Maverick! It’s been awhile since I’ve looked at the videos from when he first started training and oh my goodness has this horse changed for the better! So, I thought I’d share his before and now.

Maverick is still learning, he just turned 5 the other day so he’s still a baby. But he is so much more balanced, has an idea of bit acceptance, and is so much more confident and on the aids! I have just loved having this horse in my program!

Low quality photo, high quality horse 🤩

Maverick (JC: Legend in Disguise), a coming 5y/o OTTB in my program, killing it during his 2nd session over fences! This guy has such a promising career and could go in truly any direction! So excited to see where him and his owner go together!

Please excuse my equitation, it’s been a couple years since I’ve jumped consistently 🫣

So excited to share that Bobby officially has ride #1 under his belt! He was a little tense but relaxed with every step he took. So proud of Mr. Bobby!!

First sit for Bobby! Little victory 💗 we are a bit behind the curve in training but slow and steady wins the race. We’ve had a little bit of regression due to me not being consistent with him but today was a big step in the right direction! He’s not mentally ready for his first ride but it’ll happen on his time!

Meet Neyland, the cutest little Quarter cross pony. Neyland has been in my program for a couple months now, but only for one session a week. After talking with his owner, we decided it would be best to put him in my full training program. Neyland is a sweet boy but has quite a bit of anxiety and doesn’t know much under saddle. He knows leg means go, left rein means go left, right rein means go right, and how to stop… that’s about it 😅 As you can tell by the video, he simply doesn’t know how to use his body and carry himself properly. He also has zero bit acceptance but I do know that his previous owners rode him in a hackamore. Neyland a very smart and willing boy so I’m excited to see the horse he becomes after more training!

Bobby killing it on his first trip into the barn and indoor arena! He was a little skeptical going through the first door but after he figured out he could do it, the other doors were no problem! I love Bobby’s brain, when he does it once, it sticks and he remembers it! We went over the bridge, over some poles, and over a small jump one of my students had set up. So proud of Mr. Bobby! Don’t mind how nasty he is, we just got tons of rain in TN!

Tag #9086 is no longer a number… Everyone meet Heaven’s Swift Sailor “Bobby”.

Bobby is named in honor of my late grandfather, Robert Swift Adams. My grandfather and grandmother (who are now reunited in Heaven where they get to spend the rest of eternity together) lived on their sailboat and sailed together for years. This is where the name Heaven’s Swift Sailor came from!

I believe the gut feeling I had about this guy was my grandfather telling me he was the one. This one is for you, Grandpa. I hope we make you proud 💗

Meet Tag #9086, my draw for the 2024 Franklin, TN Mustang Heritage Spectacular! #9086 is a 7y/o, 14.2hh, grey gelding from Devil’s Garden.

#9086 was at the bottom of my top 10 picks prior to meeting the horses the day of selection. But, when I met him, there was just something about him that brought him to the top of my list. I just had a feeling he was the one.

If 2023 taught me anything, it was to listen to my gut… and my gut was telling me that #9086 was my partner for the Mustang Heritage Spectacular!

I am so excited for this journey and cannot wait to see where this guy and I are come June when we compete against so many amazing trainers!

A little before and after with Lucy, a client horse with a setting back problem. Setting back is a very dangerous behavior that can lead to serious injury to the horse and/or handler. Lucy now stands tied nicely and is learning some patience at the tie ring! She’s a lovely little mare overall and such a joy to work with.

Rebekah, a lesson student here at SEA Horsemanship, learning how to long line this weekend! Rebekah is taking lessons because she wants to own her own horse; she is doing it right by getting groundwork lessons before she does riding lessons! Rebekah has been a wonderful student and catches on to everything very quickly!

Last but certainly not least we have Freedom! Freedom is a 5 year old Quarter Pony. He was previously started under saddle but will probably need a full refresher. This guy is so sweet and has such a good mind, not much has phased him! I’m looking forward to working with him! He will be available following training, if you are interested in Freedom, please reach out!

Meet Pretty Girl! And boy is this one pretty girl!

Pretty Girl is a 8 year old Paint Horse mare! She is also skittish and hard to catch. She has a great mind and I’m so excited to watch her blossom. Pretty Girl will be available after she has gone through training. If you are interested in her, please reach out!
