Excellent post
A year ago I posted this on my personal page. It still holds true today:
After reading some posts I feel compelled to talk about manners in the bunny world. The old saying “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is severely lacking in some people.
Here are some thoughts, do with them what you wish and remember the Thumper Rule (if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all):
1. Be kind. Especially to kids. The adorable girl holding her bunny (Steven’s Dalton) is my granddaughter. Please treat her and every child like they were yours. I’ve heard too many parents bad mouthing kids who win claiming the show was rigged. Seriously people, these kids work so hard to put a good rabbit on the table. Applaud them, don’t tear them down. Be the adult and teach your kid(s) to be a good sport.
2. Say thank you. Thank FFA/4H leaders who invest in kids, show secretaries who spend countless unpaid hours to deliver a good show, judges (even when your bun doesn’t win), other breeders/competitors that help put others rabbits on the table, write for the judges, or just make the day fun (we need fun people).
3. Help. A good friend (Patricia Carroll) wrote a great post reminding me that we are all one life event away from losing our herd. Help new breeders and our youth. Teach them show etiquette and the rules. Help them build a great herd even if that means letting go of that winning rabbit. Shows where the same person wins all the time suck. Judges, give meaningful comments that help breeders understand their rabbit’s faults and good points.
4. Encourage. This world is cruel enough. Don’t let it seep into the rabbit world. Be the light that encourages breeders who get discouraged and want to quit. Rabbits are hard but so worth it.
5. Give credit. Give credit to breeders and their Rabbitry for their rabbits that win for you and/or make great babies. You are reaping the benefits of their hard work. Give credit to people who help and encourage you for they took the time to invest in you. The REW Graysen is holding was bred by Steven Henderson.
6. Do not let someone walk into a mine field. This is part of help others but, I thought warranted it’s own rule. The rules (written and unwritten) of the rabbit world can be confusing. If someone is doing something that violates the rules, show etiquette, or just creates a disturbance in the Force, TELL THEM. Don’t let them walk into the mine field. If they ignore you, then let Darwin take over.
7. Right of first refusal. Credit to Sandy Campbell. If you decide to move a rabbit on that you got from another breeder, give that breeder the right of first refusal before you sell it to someone else.
I have been fortunate to have a village that has done these things for me: Lisa Smoker Lester, Alan Tamie Kerr File, Sandy Campbell, Kayla Campbell, Pat Carroll, Steve Kitts, Steven Henderson, John Scheiwe, Kim Scheiwe, Fernando Clark, Tina Dailey, Deborah Thorpe, Janeen Skipper, Alden Garrett, Kathy Marie, Susan Boivin, Bruce Ford, Michael Garner, Jim Rowland, Pam Schipani Jones, Rusty Westhoff, Paul Dvorak Jr., Piper Elizabeth Debruler, Josh Humphries, Ashley Sweeney, Ethan Harvill
THANK YOU for all you have done to help me and the rabbit community overall. You are simply the best.
