The following is very good info provided by Amber Rose:
Why did you choose a tall cage? Was it with your pet in mind or to save space?
Chinchillas are commonly described as a squirrel/rabbit hybrid but to be fair, a Chinchilla is closer to a rabbit than a squirrel and needs more floor space than they do height. Chinchillas are in the same family as Viscachas and most information on Viscachas applies to Chinchillas, but many are unfamiliar with them, So we'll use rabbits as a reference, but rabbits are lagomorphs and not rodents like Chinchillas. Everyone can picture what a rabbit's habitat is.... a FIELD! Now imagine that field in a desert that is cold. That is where a chinchilla lives.
Like rabbits ( Viscachas ), Chinchillas are not tree climbers. Squirrels are, and they have a natural adaption to do so such as fingers and claws that allow them to grip trees. They also have specific joints in their body that allow them to rotate grip, hold, and change direction ( like going down ). Chinchillas do not have these features. That is why they fall. Anyone who's spent enough time with Chinchillas will realize that they don't have claws that would help them hold on. They have tiny short nails whose purpose is just to protect the tips of their toes/fingers. Like our own.
Instead, chinchillas share features with rabbits. Short stubby upper arms and huge back feet. Do you know why their feet are so large? They have big feet to help jump higher, dig faster, and fend off aggressive predators.
In the Andes, you'll see in our photo that there is not a lot of trees for a chinchilla to climb. Instead, they have a lot of wild grasses to eat, and rocks to jump on/hide under.
To be honest, the most fitting cage for a chinchilla would be one that is somewhat short but long. Accessorizing the enclosure would be better if it followed how Degu owners set up theirs. Rocky, sandy, and long!
( and yes, We're pointing our fingers at ourselves here. We also once had too-tall of cages. We're slowly changing to shorter and wider setups and hope to eventually have 3ft tall x 6ft long enclosures when we move! ) The popular cage on the market is a Ferret Nation cage, with pine shavings on the floor. This is fine for a chinchilla to live in, but it should not be confused with natural. If you could flip a double unit on it's side... it would be great!

The number of species of mountain viscachas was considered to be three by most authors: L. peruanum (northern or montane viscacha), L. viscacia (southern or mountain viscacha), and L. wolffsohni (Wolffsohn’s viscacha). However, taxonomy usually differs by authors (e.g. L. peruanum is included with...
