✨Third required post✨

What a ride these past almost 100 days have been! The ATFO competition is in less than a week and while I’m nervous, I’m also excited!

Ziti has come a long way the past 3 months but unfortunately she is just not a “100 day horse”. I plan to take the competition day by day with her and see what all she can handle without pushing her too far 🙂

She’s really started to open up and become more accepting of new things! With some more time I think she’ll be something special for sure!

In no way shape or form is Ziti a dangerous horse but she is not what would be considered as “safe”. She has her moments where she can be very reactive and spooky both in saddle and on the ground still . People are also still a big hurdle for her, trying to sway a horses opinion on humans after almost 7 years of being completely unhandled is not always the easiest 😂

If she’s pushed too hard, too fast she very quickly starts to mentally shut down. That’s why, compared to others, Ziti doesn’t seem as far along. I’ve tried my absolute hardest to go at her pace and only push her when I know she can handle it. Lots of groundwork and only asking for a walk both on a lunge line and under saddle. As of now, asking her to pick up speed seems to get her mind going in the wrong direction so I have occasionally only asked for a trot here and there for short periods of time to keep her relaxed.

We had a difficult time in terms of her health as well, seeing as she was sick for a couple weeks and I think stress when she first arrived and started beginning work played a role as well. She’s picked up a lot of weight in the past couple of weeks though and is slowly building some muscle tone as I’m able to add more work to her schedule!

Z’s adoption level as of now is an advanced rider only and it’s an absolute must that her training continue after the competition. If she doesn’t get adopted, she’ll be coming back home with me to continue her training ☺️

Her perfect future home consists of someone who is going to spend lots of time with her, wether that be riding, groundwork, or just hanging out. With continued consistent work I see this girl being able to go in any direction!

What an amazing night for Z!

One thing we’ve been focusing on is having all kinds of new people around her as she’s still very timid towards others, slowly but surely she’s opening up 🥰

To have my “sista from anotha mista” ride her around and actually enjoy her was such a heartwarming thing to watch ❤️

Had a relaxing little evening with Z after a long day at work! Sometimes I like to just simply spend time with her ❤️

✨Second required post✨

Just another boring riding video of Z, working on nose control and good brakes, with a few of my favorite pictures of her!

This horse really has come a long way looking back at some moments we had when we first started. Don’t get me wrong she still has her moments and has a ways to go but she has really started to trust me and open up rather than act so shut down…it’s an incredibly rewarding feeling.

We have a little over a month until the competition and while we’re not as far as other competitors, the progress and confidence this girl has built in herself beats any score or placing she’ll ever get 🫶

I’m going to continue taking things at her pace and making sure she’s ready and able to accept her forever person soon 🥰

✨Ziti✨

We still have some weight and muscle tone to gain but this girl is still absolutely gorgeous!

The past couple days have been amazing with her, she’s really started to calm down and use her thinking brain instead of her reactive brain 🤩

Getting closer and closer to that first ride!

has been such a gentleman helping me pony around Z! She does really good with another horse around and being able to pony her has started to get used to my movements above her and getting more nose control 🤩

Ziti update:

The past month has been nothing but groundwork with this girl. For being completely unhandled she’s taken everything really well but still super flighty and nervous. So, slow work it’s been, just trying to get her to be more trusting, calm and confident.

So far her biggest problem has been with her legs (hints as to why her tail isn’t tamed yet 😂) and she’s also super sensitive to quick movements and things lower to the ground.

She was a dream to halter break (she backs up so well and responds to the slightest pressure 🤩), taken to lunging phenomenally, stands tied and flag work has helped her a lot but she still tends to be watchy. I’ve had the saddle on her a couple times and ponied her around, slowly working our way to the first sit.

Z is a very smart girl and has caught on to everything very quickly! Her biggest hurdle is just understanding that not everything is as scary as she thinks it is! 😂

Hope to have at least some ponying videos soon!

I hope to have some videos put together soon of how well Z is doing! She’s a super quick learner for sure 🤩

We’re back for 2023!

Decided to apply to the Appalachian Trainer Face Off a little last minute this year but so excited that I did!

While she wasn’t my first pick, I’m still so happy with her. Ziti (Zee-T) is a 9 yr old Welsh/Arabian/Appaloosa who we’ll be calling Z for short! 🥰

While I’ve been away at work for a few days, Colby has so graciously been taking care of her for me and I’ve heard nothing but good things!

Can’t wait to start working with her and getting that tail straightened out 😂

Here is our technical from today! Some key notes:

• Brutus obviously doesn’t think trotting in hand is very important 😂
• OF COURSE I would be the one to almost lose my hat 🤦‍♀️
• He is still learning to side pass but he’ll get there with more work!
• I purposefully skipped the fly spray because that still makes Brutus extremely nervous and stresses him out to the point that anything else I pick up freaks him out for a minute and I didn’t want too ruin the whole technical because of it!
• Brutus knows how to step next to a mounting block but decided he didn’t want too this time 🙄😂
• Brutus just couldn’t get his feet on that platform but in his defense it was a little small 🤣
• As you can see Brutus gaits around very well but when it comes to his lope he’s hard to keep in a circle pattern and doesn’t stay as relaxed. This will continue to improve with more riding and training of course! 🥰 (let’s not forget that this horse refused to lope for the longest time lol)
• I made an extra lap around the pattern because I’ll admit that I lost my train of thought but I also wanted to calm Brutus down and bring his mind back to me

All in all, Brutus did very well and I let my nerves get the best of me which in turn probably made him a little nervous as well! For never being hauled to this type of environment, he’s handled everything like a champ 🤩

This is our third and final required post for the Appalachian Trainer Face Off which means we’ve hit 90 days!

In such a short amount of time Brutus has really blossomed and it’s been such an honor to be the one caring for him! 🥰

Brutus is what I like to call a trail horse deluxe! Way more woah than go! So far he can:

• Walk,trot/gait, canter (his trot/gait will need much more work)
• Stands to be saddled, mounted, and groomed
• Stands tied and even ground ties some (not perfect just yet)
• He picks up all 4 feet and does good for the farrier
• Trail ride all day long in the front, middle, or back of the pack
• Handles obstacles very well
• Stands to be bathed and loves his washes!
• He loads and unloads from a trailer just fine

Things that will need more work:

• Fly spraying (has made tremendous progress but still wants to side step away)
• ATITTUDE, this has been my biggest set back with Brutus as he lets you know that he does not want to get into his trot or canter, while he still does so he swishes his tail and tosses his head some and tries to go his own way
• Following his nose (sometimes he decides he’s going to make his own way but just needs some correction)

Maintenance:

• Brutus is a very easy keeper feed wise and isn’t on any special routine
• I would suggest that if he is rode regularly he also see a chiropractor regularly as he does get out in his back end with regular work

Other notes:

• Brutus does well with both mares and geldings but will stand up for himself if needed
• He is still wary of things behind him and may spook because of this
• Brutus prefers to do everything in turtle speed, if asked to do fast work he will have an attitude at first but begin to tire down and cooperate better
• Brutus does well with time off (the worst of his time off was excessive attitude afterwards 😂)
• At the beginning of a ride (depending on the day) Brutus will be ready to go but as you go on he slows right back down

As of now Brutus is at an advanced beginner/intermediate level because he does need a firm hand to keep him correct! He prefers a slow, laid back environment 🐢

He will make the most perfect trail companion or even family horse (under supervision) as he does well with children!

Lastly, I do suggest that Brutus continue training for a couple more months or at least be ridden regularly when taken home. He has excelled tremendously in 100 days but still has a long way to go before he’s “fancy” broke!

Today is the last day to get your applications in, check out the ATFO and Heart of Phoenix Equine Rescue, INC for more information!
