How We Started
Glitter and Goats started in Christmas 2015 when we got a Nigerian dwarf mix Pygmy buckling as a pet who we named Blitzen. When we got our first goat we had no clue what to expect and what we we’re getting our selves into! I had always wanted one but I knew absolutely NOTHING about them! Over the course of 3 years I have learned SO much about goats in general! First thing I learned - Goats NEED companions, I can not stress that enough! When we got our first goat he seemed so happy and content until winter break ended, school started up again and we couldn’t be with him 24/7. He would sit there and cry until we would get back home, so we knew we needed to do something! Our solution - buy a mini pig as a friend.....(Ha, bad idea) He loved the mini pig since it was his only friend and would jump all over her, but eventually she got fed up after about 4 months, long story short he lost half of his ear. After having Rosie (the mini pig) and Blitzen for a while I was gifted a gorgeous polled (naturally hornless) purebred 8 month old Nigerian dwarf female! (Who we named Saige) Blitzen fell head over hooves for her and they we’re BEST friends! Finally Rosie had some peace ha ha! About 6 months later I came up with the idea that we should breed mini goats and sell them as pets! (We’ve tweaked our train of thought since then) We then got our second female who was a teeny tiny 8 week old nigerian dwarf mix pygmy named Paisley who was super sweet. We thought we were the best care takers ever! We had an awesome little herd, they all lived together in our garden and we’re “very content”. (Lesson learned, Please DO NOT keep your buck and does together 24/7, this will possibly result in does that are too young getting bred, abortions, kids getting injured, does getting bred back too soon and other possible problems..) Looking back now WE KNEW NOTHING. Yeesh i’m surprised our goats we’re still standing. After having some amazing people help us we’ve learned so much and I can not thank them enough, and I always try and do my best by being a mentor to others who need help or advice!!! We now have an awesome barn, they live in a pasture specifically fenced for there needs, we have an LGD (Livestock Guardian Dog), we give hoof trims every 2 months, we feed hay/grain/minerals daily, we try and give herbal supplements, copper bolus, deworm when needed, and annual CDT shots. Now I can say there pretty content lol. We certainly have come along way since we first started, unfortunately it wasn't easy though and we lost a few, but we are defiantly still learning and I’m proud to call Glitter and Goats my own!
