We took sparrow out on his very first ride outside of a fence or rail. My four yearold little stud is forever impressing me. He did the whole Hancock trail without having a hiccup, ba****ck. Here’s some highlights!
- He lays down on command in hand and under saddle, so I got down and up as I wanted too lol
- he splashed in the water and laid down
- he blew bubbles
- I saw the biggest honey bee nest I’ve ever seen
- encountered a coachwhip, not close but close enough 😂
He got looots of time to just stand in the water and relax, he loved the water.

It’s a good day when the farrier comes out!

04/30/2023

I don’t know who needs to hear this but:
People are talking about you. Whispering about your new job. Questioning whether you can win that race. Taking screenshots of your posts. Downplaying your weight loss. Saying you shouldn’t have married that man. Wondering why you’re still with that woman. Saying nobody listens to your podcast or wants what you’re selling. Telling folks you can’t afford that new house, car or baby.

Remember Noah? They laughed and talked about him, too.

Listen baby, God is ordering your steps. Not Facebook.

KEEP BUILDING.

Last Saturday we had the easily one of the best camps I’ve ever orchestrated!
American Heritage Girls Troop Tx0323 came out for their Horsemanship Badges, and let me tell you these young ladies were nothing short of pleasant to instruct. Such an amazingly behaved group of young women. We had so much fun! From learning how to feed and what it takes to own a horse all the way to each young lady demonstrating how to tack, mount, ride and dismount! I also can’t stress enough the group of ladies that were helping me from my own program to ensure the safety above all for the sweet girls, My intern Heidi, one of my older girls Audrey, and my sweet Abigail who already had her badge and came along to ensure we were on track and to cheer her friends on! I thoroughly enjoyed our day together sharing the knowledge I’ve attained through the years and watching these girls just light up whilst interacting with my babies. Watching others love the horses as much as we do had to have been the highlight of my month.
Bring your children out for an experience I promise they won’t forget, kindness they can model after and friendships that will last a lifetime.

CONSIGNMENT ALERT
Toby
Grade
2009 model
Up to date on EVERYTHING.
Coggins, Teeth, Shots, Farrier.

Toby is such a loving gentleman. With a fantastic handle on this guy, he is every bit of a high caliber barrel prospect. Toby has been introduced to the barrel pattern, he has yet to clock an official time, his price reflects this. We do have recent videos upon request. Toby walks, trots, lopes all at a one hand handle during basic arena work, he also has phenomenal leg cues. He has a decent spin as well, his shoulders are easily moved around with a great response time. I cant say enough about how soft he is. Toby has a gas pedal similar to a Ferrari, He is quick to the muscle and will be one to hunt his first barrel. Complimenting this massive gas pedal is a beautiful stop. If his owners had the room for an extra barrel horse they would be keeping him for their 13 year old daughter, but she has her plate full with a few horses so this guy is at sale due to no fault of his own. We do not recommend timid riders or beginners or trail only homes, as this boy loves having a job and could live off of adrenaline alone.

Upkeep:
Toby is easily maintained. He currently gets fed about 3 pounds of dry Alfalfa pellets in the morning. Hes gets 1&1/2 pounds of Bluebonnet Pro Care mixed with 1&1/2 pounds of Omolene 200 with additional Simplifly in the evenings. Going more in depth of his regular maintenance he has been on a regular trimming schedule for over a year now, recently all of our horses bumped up to a four week schedule. In regards of his shots he has ALL of them common core and at risk. He has a new coggins, and we have a folder of all his medical known history tracking from prior to his last transfer of ownership. We are more than welcoming to a Pre Purchase Exam with our vet or yours, at buyers expense.

Toby is a phenomenal barrel and rope prospect, he’s nothing short of an athlete. He was sold to a family as kid safe, while we’re sure he has great intentions he’s to quick to the muscle for me to slap that title to him. If your kids a hand and can handle some speed, you’re welcome to try them out together.

Toby’s basic handling currently includes
- Direct reining
- A beautiful loose neck rein
- yields with intent off leg pressure, a very large Yes maam/sir attitude here.
- A great stop
- backs nicely
- lunges like a dream and again, a very large yes ma’am/sir attitude here. He’s a thinker.
- stand to be mounted and dismounted, you can hang all over him and trust he’s gonna stand there.
- He’s got the start of a spin
- he stands for everything, and he allows you to do anything on the ground, he’s a phenomenal catch.
————————————
ETA- upkeep, he’s thriving off of roundbale access, soaked alfalfa cubes, omelene 100, and Gut-X, he’s already on a fed fly guard. He’s a very easy keeper. Super easy to keep feeling great!
————————————
His price starts at 6,### and will go up as he’s started on the pattern. Get him now while he’s cheap or compete against him in a few months.

Horses sleep in three different positions: standing, semi-recumbent, and fully recumbent.

Each of these positions allow the horse to reach different levels of sleep.

1. Standing, which is the safest position for a prey animal, offers the lightest level of sleep.

This allows the horse to wake and run away quickly if in danger.

2. Semi-recumbent, as shown in the picture, is where the horse lays down, but with their legs underneath them.

This allows for a deeper sleep than standing, but their legs are still underneath them for a quick stand up and run away.

3. Fully recumbent is where a horse is laid flat out on their sides. This is the only position in which a horse can get to REM sleep - deep, restful sleep.

However due to the horse's body size, they can only lay fully out for 45 minutes a time or risk crushing internal organs.

In total, horses need anywhere from 30 min to 3 hours of REM sleep a day.

What happens if a horse doesn't get enough sleep? In the next post we'll go over common symptoms of a sleep-deprived horse.

Everyone loves American Quarter Horse foals, but it takes a lot more than a sire and dam to get a foal registration in the works. One of our most frequently asked questions by AQHA members is, “How do I register my foal?”

Kota is a phenomenal dun gelding! He’s honestly got it all size, color, age, disposition and a really sweet résumé for such a young guy. He’s trailed down busy highways, the average street and in some not so relaxing woods. He LOVES water. Any excuse he can use to be in it or stand in it he’ll use, super fun to take swimming! Here his job is the babysitting lesson horse, everyone gets on him to establish themselves. He’s had toddlers, grandmas and the occasional husband who has no idea what’s going on enjoy his company for a ride. He packs children on the trail like their eggs. When we bring in client horses, yes we have a contract with you as the owner to love, nourish and evolve your horse; that being said we mostly consider it a contract to the horse. Here at Roe Performance Horses, we don’t take this lightly. We’re not gonna just jump on and ride the stress out of them. We take the time to prep them to have the smallest amount of pressure on their brains. We want them LESS emotional. After all that’s where every single problem we face besides pain typically stems from, a horse who can’t focus and leave their emotions at the hitching post. We spend lots of time with them just eating and getting to know them! The easiest lessons for them are the first week, we ask they divert their attention from the hustle, strangeness and new horses around them. We can’t stress this enough. A horse isn’t going to retain the entirety of their session if their focused on everything but you. You can’t ride the stress off a prey animal. You can certainly tire them out and make them hate their jobs, sure. You can do that. When suddenly the more common emotional issues like gate sourness, barn sour, buddy sour, and emotionally shutting down start surfacing you’re gonna wish you invested in the time to send your fur baby to a reputable trainer, or you’re gonna kick yourself for the lack of research on your behalf. To unlock the fullest potential of your horse, they need time, love and patience. To be shown the kindness of being allowed time to process and function without being micromanaged is in my opinion, the most respectful method you could show a horse. When the time is taken to ALLOW them to attempt to be your partner and excel in your hands, That’s where you start making memories and winning those performances with your horses, when you make them truly and forever, a partner. Rather than tool.

The last few months for us have been fairly stressful! With our lesson program, rehab program and client program we’ve been juggling to get the ball moving. We now have a wait list! Which is super exciting! Our lesson programs are nearly capped off, and we’re discussing rehabs for open wounds and neurological issues. Our plate is full, we have plenty of referral barns and trainers if it’s our opinion you’re searching for, if you have time to wait and want to get on our list don’t hesitate to message me! We’re still accepting immediate rehabs and some lesson students.

We accept studs, problem horses and mare and foal pairs.

After some decompressing I wanted to pick at Smokey’s brain and he needed a good fifteen minute reminder and he was golden. We have some under saddle work to be done but he’s gonna catch on quickly. Literally a big puppy dog! Huge thanks to AK Horsemanship for jumping on the new guys! She’s one of my favorite trainers to outsource and hang out with for some discussion and ideas!

Snickers update!
Once feral, now the sweetest mare. She loves scratches, brushing, and thrives in sessions! Crazy to think this mare was hunting people in malice a few months ago. We’re getting her trimmed up soon as feet manners are better and then she’s ready for her first steps into her cow career!

Super long but super accurate:

Here's a horse business public service announcement.

Let me preface this by saying the main topic of discussion among horse professionals these days is a complete lack of qualified help. We're fully staffed, with a good staff (and if you try to poach them, I'll hurt you. I'm kidding. Maybe.) but it's been the most challenging year ever to maintain that. So many trainers -- some of the most recognizable names out there -- are challenged more than ever to be fully staffed. And the revolving door it takes to get to the "right" people

Horse professionals never have extra time and usually not a fantastic amount of extra money. Hiring people that interview enthusiastically only to have them not work out because they didn't think the job through is worse than not hiring anyone at all. So if you're considering a job in the horse industry, let me educate you on a few things that might save you and your future employer some frustration.

First, if you want a job with specific hours and regular time off, the horse business isn't the career for you. If you show up on your first day or first week with a long list of days and weekends you need off, don't waste our time or yours. It doesn't work that way. If you can't handle working insanely long days seven days a week during the busy show season, you will hate this job.

If you can watch hard working people work hard while you work at half their speed, or if you hide on a remote part of the facility to get out of work, you're team mates will not respect you in a nanosecond. And they will know. Once you've lost the respect, it's hard to get it back. And if employers keep slackers around, it's the most demoralizing thing for good employees. You won't last.

If you don't think you "signed up" to clean stalls or wash boots or other necessities to keeping horses healthy and sound, here's a news flash for you: actually, you did sign up for just that. It was part of the job description you applied for. What you don't do or don't do conscientiously, someone else with a full plate of responsibilities has to do instead. Not cool. The most successful trainers you can think of cleaned stalls far longer into their career than you can imagine. Cleaning stalls builds character and those who think they are above stall cleaning need character building most of all.

If blistered hands, blistered butts, illnesses that don't require hospitalization, or mental anguish because it's the anniversary of your pet's death 3 years ago keep you from working at 100 percent, start exploring other careers. Livestock always need to be cared for and shows don't stop because you're tired and sore. Clients have made tremendous investments in getting their horse to that show, and not having it properly prepared because you're not physically or mentally 100 percent isn't how this game works. This is a game of suck it up buttercup. It's about sacrifice. I know trainers who were so sick they've gone in to the emergency room for IV fluids between classes and come back for their set and won it all. It takes grit and strength. If you want to be in this industry, you better be prepared to have that type of commitment.

If you think everyone and everything has to be perfect in order for you to be happy, not only is the horse business not for you, but neither is any other industry where you have coworkers or customers. Sometimes you don't get along with everyone you work with because not all personalities mesh. Put on your adult pants and realize that that is life. You're probably not their favorite person either. You don't have to be friends with the people you work with. But as long as they are doing their job and you are doing yours, and no one is being inappropriate, trust me, your boss doesn't want to hear about how that person bugs the hell out of you by simply existing. The same goes for clients. You might not like each and everyone that walks through the barn but you better respect that it is because of them that the business exists and be a part of providing the cheerful excellent customer service they deserve.

Here's another earth shocking reality: your horse job is not just about riding horses. There's ranch maintenance that has to be done and sometimes that means all hands are on deck tackling a big project. Like filling stalls. Or building/repairing fence. Or reorganizing the tack room. Or cleaning tack. Also interruptions happen. If a semi of hay arrives and everyone else is at show, unloading it is part of your job. If you're attitude tanks on the days your riding is interrupted in big or small ways, you have a utopian view of what it's like to be in the horse business and should probably find something more predictable.

If you aren't willing to care for the animals in your care in all types of elements and put their needs before yours, please don't apply.

If you aren't willing to take direction and accommodate a program's style -- and they are all different -- you will last about 5 minutes. The same goes if you think you know it all. The most successful accomplished trainers I know are great because they continue to learn from others throughout their entire career.

At the end of the day, there's a major difference between liking horses and being a horseman.

Horsemen make sure horses are fed and watered and blanketed and doctored before they are.

Horsemen make sure very single wet spot is cleaned out of every single stall instead of just putting shavings on top of wet. Because they realize that clean stalls keep horses healthy, and that's critically important.

Horsemen never forget a medicine dose administration, to skip wrapping a horse, to miss doctoring an injury or administering a therapeutic.

Horsemen don't quit when their body is wore out. They quit when all the work is done, when the last horse is cared for, when the last client has shown.

Horsemen recognize that all horses are individuals and treat them as such. They train different according to each's unique needs. They don't just trot circles to warm them up, they feel the horse, get to know the horse, and take pride in tailoring their preparing them exactly as that particular horse requires.

Equally important is that horsemen respect their team, their clients and their peers in the same way they respect their horses. They have too much pride to watch another work or pull more than their fair share.

Being successful in the horse business isn't about perfection. We're not perfect. No one is perfect. It is, however, about excellence. Approaching every task, every human or equine interaction, every event with a commitment to showing up in excellence. And that starts with your very first horse job. If you can't commit to doing that, then the best thing to realize is that as much as you might like horses, it should be your hobby not your career. No one is entitled to taking a shortcut to the top. There are no shortcuts at any stage of this game.

This career is not for everyone, and that's ok. No career is. That's what makes the world go round. But before you apply for that horse position, think through if you're ready for the lifestyle and to be a horseman, not just a job.
