— LET’S TALK ABOUT PARVOVIRUS —

🛑 What is parvo? Canine parvovirus is a HIGHLY contagious virus that commonly causes GI disease in young, unvaccinated dogs.

⚠️ What are the signs and symptoms of parvo?
Signs and symptoms include anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea. Current intestinal parasites, enteric pathogen infection, and/or stress (from weaning, overcrowding, malnutrition, etc) are contributing factors of more severe clinical illness. Clinical signs of parvo generally develop within 5–7 days of infection/exposure, but can take up to 14 days. This period of 5-7 days is also called the incubation period.

✅ How is it diagnosed?
Diagnosis is typically based on exposure history, physical examination findings, and f***l antigen testing (parvovirus snap test). False-negative results can be seen early in the course of the disease — before peak viral shedding — because of the diluted f***s due to large volume diarrhea. A false-negative can also result from the rapid decline in viral shedding that tends to occur within 10–12 days of infection (3-4 days after development of clinical signs).

🔵 How does it spread?
Parvovirus is a transmitted by contact and is shed in the f***s of infected dogs within 3-7 days of exposure (often before clinical signs ever develop). An infected dog that has recovered will still pass the virus through f***s for up to 14 days. Crowded living conditions, lack of proper disinfection products and processes, and failure to quarantine and isolate (separate infected dogs from other dogs) are primary causes of cross-contamination. Keep the puppy indoors until they have at least two parvo vaccinations. Parvo is a very hardy virus that can live in the environment for several years. Do not take a puppy less than 6 months old to dog parks and do not allow other puppy visitors until your puppy is fully vaccinated. Proper isolation and disinfection are critical to prevent the spread of parvo. Stacking of cages (typically seen with various breeding evironments) that are not properly scrubbed with disinfectant specifically designed for killing parvo, lack of isolation, and lack of proper PPE create prolific and rapid spread of not just parvo, but many other diseases.

🟫 Is there a cure?
Treatment is largely supportive on an inpatient or outpatient basis because specific therapies are not available. The main goals of treatment include restoration of fluid, electrolyte, and metabolic abnormalities and prevention of secondary bacterial infection. Parvovirus is not what causes the death of the dog, but it is the secondary infection. With early, rapid, and appropriate supportive veterinary care, 70%–90% of dogs with parvo will survive. Dogs that recover develop longterm immunity. Elanco has a new Canine Parvovirus Monoclonal Antibody (CPMA) that may shorten the course of the disease and improve outcomes if recognized early. It is one dose administered via IV and is well tolerated in puppies as young as 6 weeks of age.

🟣 How to prevent parvo?
To prevent parvovirus, vaccination with a modified-live vaccine is recommended at 6–8, 10–12, and 14–16 weeks of age, followed by a booster administered at 1 year old. Puppies need a minimum of four parvovirus/distemper vaccines to be fully protected. Exposure to parvo can be greatly reduced by not allowing the puppy on the ground outside until they have been fully vaccinated.

♥️ What now?
The BEST way to keep them healthy and protected from deadly viruses and diseases is to get ALL of their puppy vaccinations beginning at 6 weeks of age. Keep in mind, puppies should not leave their mother or siblings until they are 8 weeks of age, but their shots must begin at 6 weeks when maternal immunity has begun waning.

Think of it this way….vaccinations are much more cost-effective (at about $20 each) when compared to the hundreds or thousands of dollars you would spend trying to save your puppy when they get sick from this very preventable disease. By preventing disease, you can save yourself the heartbreak of watching your puppy suffer to death because you couldn’t afford the cost of treatment at the veterinary hospital.
