Over 40 yrs ago Bob Barker was telling people to spay & neuter their pets at the end of every episode of The Price is Right, which I know we ALL watched at some point. And somehow we still have an overpopulation crisis where cats and dogs are euthanized daily in shelters due to lack of space ๐ข. Something has to change!

Pets are a lifelong commitment, not until you receive your next set of orders ๐ While we appreciate your sacrifices for our country, your fur baby didnโt get to choose. INSTEAD, go to the local shelter or rescue where youโre stationed and get involved in FOSTERING! This way you get your fur baby fix AND youโre helping to save lives by helping a shelter animal and making room to save another! WIN-WIN!! ๐
Guys, look at Porkchop (now Scooby)! From being a little puppy snuggled up with his sassy sister and mama to now a handsome big boy celebrating another thanksgiving with his forever family ๐งก. Iโm pretty sure heโs a good 20 lbs bigger than Mama was in that pic since thatโs right when we first got them and she hadnโt been fattened up yet ๐

A small glimpseโฆ
The shelter gets in a bunch of new dogs. That means Fido (used for example) who has been there the longest needs to leave. Since he is a pit mix and surrendered his only option is a rescue. The shelter shares what information they have - age, weight, dog friendly, cat friendly, medical or behavior concerns. And then the massive search for a rescue begins. Emailing, messenger, texting, FB posts, Instagram. Trying to find a rescue with one spot to take poor Fido before itโs too late. The responses of No space for a pit is almost instant or just no responses at all because rescues are so tired of saying no to so many. So it continues- keep reaching out hours and days on end, keep asking, keep begging. After days there is a small glimmer of hope that maybe a group could take if they can find a foster that would commit in a few weeks when the dog is ready. Another couple of days pass of waiting, hoping and praying that something works out. They finally say yes to Fido. The shelter gets told he has a rescue. Now he needs a local foster and so the process starts over with begging, pleading in messenger, texts, social media posts - can anyone save him by fostering for a few weeks? Days of pleading knowing the clock is ticking because the shelter cannot keep holding with all the new dogs that have came in. Finally a foster steps up if someone can hold him until they get off work tomorrow. Now the next process starts. A temporary foster to hold Fido for the afternoon has to be found. So more asking and begging. Once that person is found now plans to actually get Fido out of the shelter starts. Itโs been 7 days since the shelter said he needs to leave- time is critical. Only people on a small list are able to sign animals out of the shelter for rescue. Need to see which of those people can arrange to sign Fido out and meet the temporary foster. Once worked out and the temporary foster has him they can arrange getting to the foster that evening. Now Fido has a way out of the shelter. The next step is vetting. The rabies certificate and any other vetting information needs picked up from the shelter. The vet offices need called until a spot is found to get Fido in. Forms need completed and sent into the the vet ahead of the appointment. The foster needs told times for drop off and pick up and make plans for getting Fido there. If the foster needs help getting to and from, another volunteer will need to be found to help with this to make sure Fido gets his vetting done. All the vet records will be gathered and a packet created to send with him. Once Fido is almost ready, the foster will write up information and take a bunch of pictures of Fido to help find him the perfect forever home. The rescue taking him will post him and start their process. Now a transport needs arranged. So texts and messages to pilots to see when anyone might be able to fly sweet Fido to his rescue. If no pilots are able, the more messages to ground transporters to see if anyone has space. If a pilot is found, plans start being made for where to meet. If not local, a driver will need found to get Fido to the airport where the pilot can meet out. If weather is a problem, a back up plan needs to be started. When the flight happens and Fido leaves for his rescue all can take a deep breath and get ready to start over for the nextโฆright?
If only Fido was the only one. The problem is itโs never only one dog. This is what is going on for 40-50 dogs and 15-20 cats all the time. All are at different stages of the process. itโs nonstop and takes a huge Village. If the village is not big enough the volunteers burn out quickly and their hearts break knowing itโs not possible to save them all. And all the begging and pleading for help feels like it falls on deaf ears most of the time. The few who faithfully jump in to help have already committed to all they can and there is no one else willing to help. And the people giving their all to try to save these animals go to bed at night with overwhelming sadness and despair wondering how long they can go on.

โผ๏ธ - Nursing mamas can be spayed when her kittens are 4 weeks old. We will also perform surgery on pregnant cats.

*All cats will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ear-tipped.
This is a first come, first serve clinic. We do 70-ish cats on Saturday and 50-ish cats on Sunday. The Monday before the clinic we will open up a limited number of appointments here -> https://signup.com/go/YcCwbKk
Appointments open around 9am.
There is a limit of 3๏ธโฃ appointments per person and they fill up quickly! However, appointments will open up as cats decide they do not want to be trapped. If you have an appointment, please arrive by 7:30am with your ID or your appointment will be forfeited.

Drop off will start at 7:30am and go until 9am, or until we are full. You will pick up your cat(s) the same day between 5pm โ 6pm. If they are done early, we will contact you.

Trap rentals are available with a $40 cash deposit per trap. This deposit is returned once the cage is brought back. Trap rentals are no guaranteed at the shelter the day of the clinic, so please visit the shelter Monday from 10 am to 1 pm and Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm to rent your trap.

Since we donโt have any animal that will run around and play with Lady and thereโs just so much rough-housing I can do with her, I gave her her very first puzzle to try today! She did great! I think the extra pieces of kibble as โprizesโ were a happy bonus for her ๐.
Isabellaโs new mom works from home. I warned her that Isabella can get whiny sometimes. I got this video one day when she wasnโt giving Isabella the attention she wanted ๐คฃ

Ladybug ๐ has been having a tough time as the only dog in the house since Isabella & Billy came up to NY with me. No bestie to wrestle with and keep her company when she has to be crated when Jimmy isnโt home and her anxiety is noticeable โน๏ธ. I feel bad because she was doing sooooo awesome! Now that Isabella has found her forever home, itโs time to kick it in gear and find one for Lady!! The ideal home for Ladybug would be one that has another playful dog with someone that is home a majority of the time rather than a traditional work schedule where she would be without her human for most of the day. She does suffer from separation anxiety so a person that works from home or is in and out throughout the day like we are would be ideal. That also works best with her potty schedule ๐. Sheโs a FANTASTIC dog with a heart of gold and deserves her very own forever home ๐! If you or someone you know is interested in sweet Lady, please reach out. Sheโs scheduled for X-rays on Wednesday thankfully. Isabella is back in our presence and weโre about to head back home from NC with her. Major thanks to Renee for retrieving her from a frustrating situation and holding on to her until I could get back to her so we could ensure her safety. Oh and donโt mind my awful lack of voice ๐ฉ๐คฃ
As you can see, even in her sleep, Lady is quite the character! ๐ She went to the clinic this morning because she suddenly started with this terrible choking cough yesterday afternoon that causes her to throw up yellow/white foam. Sheโs already been on antibiotics for weeks for a cough and it had gotten much better but we think the intubation tube from her spay surgery Thursday may have aggravated it somehow? Anyway, we wanted her to get something more aggressive to treat it, like a steroid, and that required bloodwork. Oh boy. All of Ladyโs levels are elevated so sheโs fighting something! Prednisone, cough tablets, and canned wet food instead of dry food are what sheโs going to get for a bit. If this doesnโt improve it, weโre going to have to bring her in for X-rays to make sure thereโs not an issue with her trachea โน๏ธ. Weโve been super lucky that there was a generous foster taking care of Lady before she came to us and the cost of her spay surgery was covered also. People like that have been godsends because weโve been paying for all care out of our own pocket since we havenโt had rescue funds in many months. Except for a few donations here and there, Isabellaโs care has been on us. I know thatโs how it goes when youโre in rescue but itโs just not sustainable for us with all of these medical issues ๐. This is about the only time Isabella barks - when you have something she wants but sheโs trying to be โpoliteโ instead of forceful about getting it from you! ๐คฃ She sat there whining and talking to Koda for about 3 minutes before she finally took the bone by force ๐๐๐.
Isabella has been having a blast this weekend FINALLY having other dogs in the house that will PLAY with her! Sheโs enjoyed visits from first Jazz and now Koda ๐. Even Billy wanted in on the playtime this morning! As you can see, Isabella does well with dogs both big and small! She LOVES to play, although she can be a bit rough and mouthy at times. She would really love to find her forever home, preferably with another playful pup!
FINALLY, Isabella has another pup to play with! Jotunn is hanging out at the house with us today and sheโs happy to have someone to play with too ๐ They did such a great job playing together and being gentle but still got lots of energy out!
Isabella has the zoomies! ๐ This sweet pittie girl is nice and healthy now and ready to go to her forever home! Sheโs a little sad here because none of the cats, or cranky old Billy for that matter, will play with her and she needs that. Sheโs estimated to be about a year old but sheโs really like a puppy at heart and needs another playful dog to frolic with. Sheโs a total cuddle bug and I love snuggling with her but she deserves to be in the perfect kind of home for her. Can you help us find that for Isabella? Isabella has made HUGE improvements in how she interacts with the cats! Although she passed her cat test at the shelter, she was a little too curious about them upon arrival here so weโve had to work with her to show her that theyโre our babies and not walking steaks - think like the old cartoons where a character that a predator was watching would suddenly turn into a steak with shoes on ๐คฃ. Sheโs only ever around them while supervised of course but now her body language is completely different and now she tries to engage with them and play but I donโt think sheโs going to win them over with that ๐คท๐ปโโ๏ธ๐!
Isabella went to the vet today to get her booster shots and to make sure sheโs all done needing any dewormers because boy was she loaded with parasites! ๐ฃ Thatโs likely what had caused her prolapsed rectum, the parasites causing her to strain so badly going to the bathroom that they compared it to a person developing hemorrhoids. Luckily that issue is resolved and now itโs time to tackle the fact that sheโs super underweight โน๏ธ. Donโt worry baby girl, fattening up is a specialty in this house so we got you!! Hereโs a video of her playing with some puppies we were sitting by at the clinic. They were sooo cute but oh what a handful! Isabella did great with the babies and the two little girls we were near! ๐
