Hammond Man Crashes Into Crown Point Home

At approximately 12:27 AM, Sunday, December 8, Crown Point police officers at the police station heard a vehicle crash in the 400 block of East Clark Street.

Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle crashed into a home. No one inside the home was injured. The driver fled from the scene on foot heading southbound, witnesses told police.

K-9 Blitz began tracking the driver behind the residence where the vehicle crashed. Police
apprehended the driver after he attempted to break into a homeowner’s garage in the 100 block of Nichols Street.

The driver was later identified as Deonta Tyrone Allen, 27, of Hammond. Officers arrested Allen without further incident. He was later transported to a nearby hospital for
treatment. Medical staff treated Allen for a hand injury.

Officers observed a moderate odor of alcohol coming from Allen and bloodshot eyes. He refused to submit to field sobriety testing and results were inconclusive for portable breathalyzer testing. A warrant was obtained to draw Allen’s blood to determine his blood alcohol content. Results are pending lab review by the Indiana State Police.

Allen told police he was thinking about his grandmother before the crash, causing him to run off the road. Allen admitted to stealing the vehicle he was driving from a family member.

Allen was transported to the Lake County Jail without incident and remains in custody. At the time of his arrest, he had two active warrants, one for criminal mischief and another for intimidation. He also has prior convictions.

Allen is being preliminarily charged with theft of a motor vehicle, a level 6 felony; failure of duty, class A misdemeanor; driving while suspended prior, class A misdemeanor;
criminal trespass, class A misdemeanor; and two counts of operating while intoxicated, pending lab results.

Charges have been presented to the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office and are pending.
