Attention Educational Post
Mounting behaviors aren’t always what they seem to be.
In this video, you will observe two year-old Romeo mounting Cowboy, a much larger older pony. Romeo is a jack (intact male donkey) and has lots of testosterone that causes him to be aggressive during hormonal spikes. Prior to coming to Safari Farm, Romeo was not handled properly by his human companions. Often being chased, doing the chasing and wrestled with. His owners meant no harm and thought this was adorable play with a baby donkey.
Because of this Romeo was not taught proper boundaries and as he got older and hormones kicked in he became aggressive with his older, calmer donkey friends. He has been temporarily relocated with our horses so that they could teach Romeo how to be better behaved.
In many animals species females will mount other females and males will mount other males as a display of dominance (can also be normal healthy play). This dominance can be very mild or become very aggressive and cause serious injury to the other animal.
As Romeo mounts Cowboy to display his dominance, Cowboy gives him the lightest double kick to teach him this is not appropriate.
This “teaching” can only be done by gentle, patient geldings (castrated horses).
Romeo will soon become a gelding and as his hormones level out so will his behavior.
So what could happen if we left Romeo intact?
His behavior would become more aggressive, not only towards other animals, but possibly towards his human companions. His surge of testosterone would take over and he would not be a mentally happy donkey.
Animals that are not in a proper breeding program should never be left intact.

It is with a broken heart that we have to announce the passing of our Chino.
Chino developed debilitating arthritis that became unmanageable with medication. We made the very difficult decision to let him pass peacefully at the loving hand of his veterinarian and surrounded by the love of his caretakers.
He will forever be in our hearts.

Guess what day it is? No not that day, it’s alpaca shearing day!
Enjoy the day with whatever you’re doing.
For those of you that have seen Bob you probably saw his head, waddle and snood (the horn looking thing above his beak) bright red and much larger and looser than in the video.
What has caused Bob to shrink up and turn white? He’s excited for dinner, of course!
The spacing between the collagen fibers changes when the blood vessels swell or contract, depending upon whether the turkey is excited, angry or showing off.

Cookie and Cannoli are out with the herd!
Y’all, I’m not going to lie I get major anxiety when I have to introduce my precious babies to the rest of the herd. Mostly because many of my animals are obsessed with me and so jealous of new animals that they relentlessly pick on them when I’m there.
So how do we introduce babies to the adults? I ask zookeeper Shannon to do it and then I leave. 😆 Magically when I return everybody is getting along.
PS: Cupcake, please do not pummel your brother and sister.

Sometimes those of us that are experienced with handling camels, or other large livestock or exotics, can forget that we have all had our first moments and lessons to be learned.
Keeper, Leigh Ann is learning how to deal with Chino’s naughty behavior not wanting his halter on or the dewormer I have in my hand.
With a raised hand she was trying to show Chino she was wanting to pet and comfort him… but camels are intelligent and he knew he wasn’t getting pets. Her movement and hesitation encouraged him to bark and foam at her. This can be extremely intimidating to someone that has not dealt with this type of behavior before.
It’s important to allow people to safely realize that what they are doing isn’t working so that they can figure out what does. It took a few tries but eventually Leigh Ann was victorious, and Chino took his medicine!
Thanks for trusting me Leigh Ann!
