Hello everyone! I’ve been seeing a post circulating around of a person who starved their dog and kept water away because they fell upon hard times. I just want to say that if you ever fall on hard times to where you can’t even provide water for your animals please surrender them or rehome them to someone else (even a temporary foster) until you can get back on your feet. An animal should not have to go through months of neglect because we’re unable to provide for that responsibility we took on.
If you ever do fall on hard times here’s a few pointers to help keep your pets bellies full:
- Dollar stores have cheap dog food, it’s not the best but at least it’s something.
- There are dog food pantries, and discounted dog food warehouses.. see if there is any in your area.
- If you’re making your own meals, split them in half with your dog. Share.
- Some pet stores will have discounted food bags due to expiration or are “destroyed” ask about these.
- Go dumpster diving if your state allows it and it’s not on private property. (Keep away from one’s that say no trespassing).
- Reach out to local animal shelters/rescues and see if they can help.
- Join FB groups strictly for helping people/pets in need.
Water:
- 5 Gallon water jugs range between $5 - $14, invest in one and refill it whenever you can at restaurant/gas station bathrooms. It’s free.
- A gallon water jug costs between $.98 - $2. Invest in one and refill everyday in public bathrooms.
(Water Fountains are free at public parks too)
There are so so sooooo many steps you can take before your pet reaches the stage of starvation/dehydration. If you can not do any of the things listed above after falling on hard times then it is time to find a temporary foster or rehome to someone who can provide for the dog(s).
If you ever need help, it is definitely okay to reach out and ask for help. Please do not neglect/abuse your animals.
