On 10/20/2025, we stepped up to help a rescue partner we’ve worked with for years. They reached out specifically about Zina—a heavily pregnant, incredibly sweet dog who had been surrendered simply for being pregnant. We had the space, and it had been some time since we’d taken in an expectant mom - we knew we could give her the care she deserved!

Caring for a pregnant dog is never simple. We don’t know how many puppies she will have, whether they’ll be born healthy, or if Zina herself might need medical support during delivery. But the uncertainty is always worth it. Zina needed us, and her unborn puppies deserved a safe, stable environment where they could begin life healthy and protected.

Thankfully, our amazing kennel manager opened her home to give Zina a quiet, peaceful place to nest and deliver. Once the puppies are old enough, they’ll come to the sanctuary, where our dedicated staff and wonderful volunteers will help socialize them as they grow. We’re also fully equipped to provide any medical intervention Zina or the puppies may need—from prenatal care to puppy vaccines—and each one will be spayed or neutered to help break the cycle of unwanted litters before heading to their forever homes.

Helping a fellow rescue in need, helping Zina, and helping her babies was simply the right thing to do. This is why we’re here—to give dogs in need the chance at the healthy, loving future they deserve.

Momma Zina has officially outdone herself — she gave birth to a whopping 11 healthy puppies! That’s 6 boys and 5 girls filling the nursery with tiny paws, puppy snores, and the sweetest little squeaks you’ve ever heard!
We’re now accepting adoption applications for these adorable babies so that when they’re weaned from Mom and ready to spread their wings, they can head straight into the loving forever homes they deserve. (Please note: Zina and the puppies will not be ready for adoption until the end of December)

Don’t tell Kenai he’s a senior — he’s far too busy chasing tennis balls and living life to the fullest! 🎾 This handsome guy is a playtime professional who will happily fetch from dawn until dusk if you’re up for it. Whether it’s a long hike, a dip in the water, or one more round of “just one more throw,” Kenai is always game. 🐾

He might be a little older, but his energy and enthusiasm say otherwise. Kenai’s the kind of dog who reminds you that age is just a number — and adventure doesn’t have an expiration date. 🌲💦

He’s looking for a home that loves to stay active and appreciates a good game of fetch as much as he does (which is saying something!).

Mistletoe & Birdie had an absolute BLAST together — zoomies, play bows, the whole package!
And even more exciting news… Birdie is headed home today! 🏡💛

Meet Averie, self-proclaimed Squeak Destroyer Extraordinaire! 🧸🎶 While other pups nap, she’s busy conducting a one-dog symphony of squeaks — every note a reminder that no toy squeaks forever. 😆

Don’t let the name fool you — Stone might sound tough, but he’s really a big-hearted softie underneath it all. ❤️ This handsome senior gent has weathered a few bumps along the way, but he’s proven that even the most resilient souls have plenty of love left to give.

Stone enjoys the simple things in life — a game of fetch, a good walk, and a comfy spot to relax with his favorite people. He’s got a few health quirks that require a little extra care, but that just makes him even more special. His gentle nature and goofy charm have made him a staff favorite, and we can’t help but think his perfect home is out there just waiting for him.

Bitzy is living her best life already — she got a full-blown welcome home party, complete with endless toys, belly rubs, and all the love a pup could dream of. 🎈🧸

Her dad may not have planned on adopting when he first started volunteering… but sometimes love sneaks up, sits in your lap, and refuses to give the toy back. 😉💞

Our Mission: is to find loving homes for abused, abandoned and neglected dogs… to spay/neuter our rescued dogs to stop the cycle of unwanted litters… to assist in public education for the betterment of our local animal community… Maintain the highest standards of care for our dogs, including general and extensive veterinary care, assist with one-on-one training & behavioral needs… Provide housing, love, tenderness and compassion all dogs deserve. Truly giving them ‘A home along the way’, for as long as they need.

Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary is recognized federally as a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose primary goal; is to place homeless dogs into loving, lifelong homes. Mackenzie’s is funded solely by private donations and fundraisers and does not receive any state, local or federal funding. Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary is Michigan’s largest no-kill facility dedicated to providing ‘A home along the way’ for dogs in transition, founded in August of 1999. **Please note that our facility is not open to the public and all visits to the sanctuary are by appointment only.
