❄️ Pupdate Alert! ❄️

Sweet Bitzy is living her best life up north and absolutely LOVING all the snow! ☃️🐾 She’s been zooming through snowdrifts, rolling in the fluff, and soaking up every chilly moment.

Bitzy even got to meet her grandma and has been busy spreading the love everywhere she goes! 💕 We’re so happy to see this little snow angel thriving in her forever home — where her heart (and tail) never stop wagging. 💙

Your generosity this Giving Tuesday helps ensure that Mackenzie’s remains “a home along the way” for dogs of every age — including those who may never find a home beyond our sanctuary walls. As our resident dogs grow older, and as more adult dogs arrive in our care, the work of our on-site veterinary clinic becomes even more essential.

Aging dogs often require ongoing medical support, from managing chronic conditions to ensuring daily comfort and quality of life. These long-term veterinary costs are significant, but they are absolutely vital. Your support allows us to provide the highest level of care for every dog, while giving our aging residents the dignity, comfort, and love they deserve in their golden years.

In a perfect world, no animal would spend the holidays waiting in a shelter for a family to call their own. Sadly, that’s not our reality—We have many dogs (6 years and older) hoping for a soft place to land, a warm lap to curl into, and a loving family to cherish them through their golden years.

Q: Why do older dogs get overlooked?

A: Older/senior dogs are often passed by for reasons that aren’t their fault. Some of the most common include:
• Age—Many adopters look for younger, more “active” dogs.
• Size - Smaller to medium sized dogs are often wanted, many dogs in rescues tend to be larger breeds
• Breed - The false stigmas around certain breeds can sometimes deter an adopter.
• Coat color—It sounds surprising, but certain colors are adopted less often.
• Compatibility concerns—Some seniors struggle with dog or cat aggression.
• Shyness or fearfulness—New environments, unfamiliar people, or loud homes can be overwhelming.
• Medical conditions—Existing health needs or potential medical costs can discourage adopters.
Many families are searching for a dog that easily fits into an active, social lifestyle. Because of this, older dogs in shelters can sometimes be overlooked — not because they lack potential, but because they may come with a few extra needs. Whether it’s managing arthritis, building confidence, or finding the right match, older dogs often face more hurdles on their path to adoption.
Yet their hearts, resilience, and capacity for love are nothing short of extraordinary. With a little patience and understanding, these wonderful dogs can become some of the most loyal, gentle, and grateful companions a family could ever hope to find.
(At Mackenzie’s, we are completely up front on everything we know about the dog and what that individual dog would need for you both to thrive together.)

Love truly has no age limit.
And for an older dog, a forever home isn’t just a dream—it’s a miracle!
If you're not ready to adopt, consider becoming a foster. Foster families are truly a blessing. Allowing a dog to relax away from the shelter in a home allows the dog’s true personality to shine through. Mackenzie’s will handle the medical care and all you have to do is share your heart and home for one of our older dogs in need.

Please help our efforts today, this Giving Tuesday, to help aging dogs in need at Mackenzie’s Animal Sanctuary! https://www.facebook.com/donate/833389685966553/
