YHSSPCA Volunteer of the Month September 2024, Dottie Mazzarella

Every day, kind-hearted individuals help our shelter care for animals in need of a loving home. This September, our Volunteer of the Month we are celebrating is one very special team member who helps us honor our mission, Dottie Mazzarella. Without people like her, we wouldn’t be able to save the lives of the many homeless animals across our community.

Dottie is a 3rd generation of Dorothies who loves animals. It showed by the many pets she recalls in a family she describes as “always crazy about cats” in her upbringing in Niskayuna, NY. Dottie’s list wasn’t even complete when she shot off many names such as Sara, Pricilla, Moochie, Sgt. Pepper, Daisy, Ophelia and Ebony. Then once she lived on her own, she had Tyler, Lyla, Skyler, Chester, Tabitha and we couldn’t forget the special standout canine, her “very cool for cats” dog Bailey. Today, Dottie is the proud cat mom of Clara, Anthony, Gino and Annabelle, each with their own special history and personality.

Clara, her beautiful 10-year-old Maine C**n was found as a lucky kitten hiding in a car engine and as Dottie explains “thankfully someone heard her meow and rescued her before starting their car!” Her colleagues have become accustomed to seeing Clara assisting Dottie at her desk when working remotely and “she is in the office with me from the moment I sit down until I shut the light at night.” Having a devoted assistant is always a great thing!

Anthony, another of Dottie’s cats fondly named after her grandfather, is a handsome long-haired 9-year-old who resembles a rare Nebelung. Dottie hasn’t done a DNA test to see what his actual bloodlines are because to her, Anthony is more importantly a special survivor from difficult days as a kitten. Rescued off the streets of Troy, NY with critical wounds that required skin grafting, he miraculously survived and became a stunning cat with a beautiful coat. Dottie is sure he knows how special he is as “he rules the roost. I have never seen such adoration to another cat as Gino and Annabelle show to Anthony.” We learned how Anthony adores Dottie too as he is always in her presence and no matter how she sleeps, he must always be directly facing her keeping a loving watchful eye on her.

Before moving to Florida, when Dottie lived in NY, one of the shelters she used to help in Schenectady, had a rescued young cat, Gino, who initially lived in a local colony but was so affectionate, they believed he could become a pet. Their local CBS TV affiliate provided pet adoption segments with visiting shelter cats and dogs who nearly always were soon adopted. As the holidays were approaching, Dottie noticed how Gino didn’t receive any interest from his TV spot for two weeks, and that’s when her good heart stepped up to make his Christmas wish come true. She admits that coming from a colony probably impacted his behavior as “he is a bit odd. I can cuddle him all night long but once I am up, he becomes timid. He is often on my desk with Clara or Anthony, if I am sitting, however, once I get up, he is instantly shy. I am sure it is because he only grew up surrounded by cats. Thankfully each year he trusts me more!” We’re grateful Gino has his own small colony at home that keeps him happy and an owner who gives him unconditional love.

Lastly, and just as special, is Annabelle, adopted during the peak of the COVID pandemic where NY animal shelters were closed to volunteers. Dottie shared that “Annabelle already had stolen my heart, so when I called the Volunteer Coordinator and inquired about her, I learned that I was the only one who could pet her, she is aggressive to anyone else. And in the week that I didn’t work my volunteer shift, she regressed.” The shelter kindly made an exception to help Annabelle, allowing Dottie to see her. You can guess how this turned out with Dottie’s good heart. She saw how Annabelle needed her, so Dottie’s furry family grew once more. Annabelle’s job is to sound the dinner bell alarm and let Dottie sneak in a quick scratch behind the ears when supper is served.

Dottie’s career requires her to travel frequently and work long hours, yet when time is her own, she gives her treasured day off to our shelter’s cats. This is her quiet time with no cell phone, focusing on them. “I absolutely love them all. It inspires and energizes me for the week ahead. I also love the staff and appreciate their hard work and dedication to a wonderful organization.” Dottie’s enthusiasm about volunteering is contagious as she shares that “anyone who loves cats and dogs should volunteer at YOUR Humane Society SPCA! Even after a hard week when everything seemed to go wrong, I walk through the Catty Shack door and instantly feel better. There is always a beautiful cat that needs some love, which suddenly makes me forget whatever problems or stress I was thinking about.”

Wonderful memorable experiences are plentiful when shy pets gain confidence, injured ones heal, and lonely ones find a loving family. Dottie mentioned one such time when she helped one of our shelter’s campus cats find a loving home as she said “there is nothing better than seeing a cat get adopted. It is what makes it all worthwhile one kitty at a time – but better yet when someone adopts at least two at a time!” And to add to the great memories, she also helped one of our shelter cats, Asher, find a home with her mom.

While feeding the cats, cleaning litter boxes, sweeping and mopping are not the favorite parts of her time with the cats, they are her labors of love followed by fun cuddling, brushing and playing with them. As if she’s not busy enough, Dottie also helps at various fundraising events including being one of the Co-Chairs of our shelter’s 1st Annual “Fore Paws Golf Classic” Tournament (go.YHSSPCA.org/ForePaws) on Nov. 15th at Harbor Hills Country Club.

Thank you to all our volunteers and a special “thanks” to our September 2024 Volunteer of the Month, Dottie Mazzarella! We always welcome more animal loving members to help with a range of needs such as animal care, administrative help, fundraising, Humane Education for local youth, and more. If you, or your friends and family, are interested in volunteering, complete an application at yhsspca.org/apply-to-volunteer/ or contact us at [email protected].

Hi everyone, remember me. My name is Maui . I was the office dog last week and I was so excited and I had such a great time. When I was leaving I heard someone say I would be on social media. I went back to my kennel and thought about that and I went oh that means Facebook and Instagram. I wanted to impress everyone that I’m a great dog and I’m a big lover. I decided to try to make my tongue into a heart so I could send kisses to everyone and find a new family.
I practiced and practiced and I was very happy at the outcome because my tongue looks like a heart. So here I am again please think of me as a new family member !!!

love and kisses

I was chosen to be the office dog for the day. I was so excited I could hardy contain myself. I was assigned the following tasks:

SNACK INSPECTOR : When ever someone opened a snack I would immediately go to their desk for a taste to make sure it was safe.

OFFICE CHAIR TAKEOVER: I needed to claim the comfiest chair.

CUDDLE BREAKS: To help the staff enjoy their day when things were getting tough. I love to cuddle.

With my playful spirt and endless fun antics I can have my new family laughing and bringing joy everyday.

If you are free this weekend let's plan for you to come visit me at YOUR Humane Society SPCA . I am so anxious for a family.

Love, Maui

P.S. In one of the comments below, you can click and watch a video of me playing with some of my friends in playgroup!

A story of human faith and a dog who would not give up hope !!!!!

Hi,my name is Honey Bear and I’m 8 years old. When I was a few months old, I was found as a stray and taken to the Camden County (GA) shelter in the summer of 2016. I was in very rough shape, because someone had poured something on me that hurt a lot. It left me confused and scared about what was happening around me. Thankfully, I found help and love at the shelter, and I was ready to move forward and find my forever home! However, the shelter was always full, and due to my condition, I was always at risk of being put to sleep. Because of this threat, another shelter agreed to take me in.

In August of 2016, I was transferred to Nassau County Humane Society (FL) and lived there until July 21, 2019. During that time, a nice lady from Camden County came to visit me. She made sure I was okay, and seeing her brought me so much happiness. She understood how hurt and confused I was when she first saw me, and her kindness meant the world to me. It felt like a little light in some dark times.

There was a storm brewing, and Nassau County had to evacuate, which is how I ended up at YOUR Humane Society in Sumter County on July 22nd. It was a big change, but I held onto the hope that I would find a loving home. Each new place has brought me closer to that dream! When I arrived, I was, of course, confused and scared. I wasn't very friendly at first because I didn’t know how to protect myself. But then in June of 2021 there was this guy with a beard who kept looking out for me and watching me. Gradually, he earned my trust, and eventually, I could have fun with him. It felt so good to let my guard down and enjoy some playtime! I learned his name was Tom.

I then had to have knee surgery, and Tom, that guy with the beard fostered me while I healed. He took such good care of me during my recovery, and having his support made all the difference. I felt safe and loved, which helped me get back on my paws in no time!

On March 24, 2023, I went to a place called (DPFL) Dogs Playing for Life to get some training, and it turned out to be a lot of fun! I met new dogs there, and I did really well. It helped me build my confidence and learn new skills, making me feel so much better about myself. I loved every moment of it!

Tom and Joan fostered me again through another surgery, and we’re still working on my recovery today. Tom has been right by my side, helping me through every step. His care and support mean so much to me, and I’m grateful to have him in my corner as I continue to heal!

And then something amazing happened! Tom's wife said I could come live with them. She is so compassionate. Today is my gotcha day, and I’m officially adopted! After roughly 2,920 days (eight years) in the shelter system, I finally have a forever home. Thank you Tom Diss for giving me this chance and for never giving up on me. I can’t wait to start this new chapter of my life with you!

YOUR Humane Society SPCA Reminds Animal Lovers that August is National “Make-A-Will” Month

Making a will is something no one wants to think about. At the same time, no one wants their assets to go to the State or to get tied up in court. Unfortunately, life can change in an instant. A prepared will or trust can provide peace of mind, having your assets distributed exactly as you instructed, including to those people or local charities that mean something significant to you.

A local supporter and happy adopter, Sandra, a Sumter County resident, mentioned why she prepared her estate planning with YOUR Humane Society SPCA as a beneficiary. “I included YOUR Humane Society SPCA in my will because, having adopted my dog from them, I have witnessed their compassion and dedication first hand. I support their mission to provide a no-kill shelter and other vital services. I also recognize the urgent need for those services in our community. I can give donations now to help and by giving through my will, I can help assure that those services continue into the future.”

YOUR Humane Society SPCA offers a pamphlet as a guideline of valuable information to those interested in not only assisting our shelter in our lifesaving work but also to ensure the future welfare of their own surviving pets. Interested donors should take this guideline with them when meeting with their independent financial and legal counsel to execute wills, trusts, contracts or other agreements.

Also, Florida Statute §736.0408 allows a PET TRUST as part of an individual’s estate planning, which is enforceable in court, and allows part of said estate to go towards care of a pet(s). Pet owners are encouraged to include a PET TRUST. It is best to assign a pet caregiver, provide funding for the pet’s lifetime care and have the trustee maintain asset control according to the owner’s wishes. In the case of a will, a temporary pet caretaker should be selected for the time between the owner's death and the admission of the will to probate. A charitable organization can be considered to care for and/or place your pet companion if no friend or relative can take on your pet.

If you want to help save lives by “Leaving a Legacy of Compassion,” please contact Cindi Mainer, Director of Development for YOUR Humane Society SPCA at 352-355-8740 or [email protected] to request a copy mailed to you right away.

All her puppies have been adopted and now it's Belle's turn. She's finished her heartworm treatment, but we continue to limit her activity. She is now allowed to be off leash in a play yard and to do her favorite thing, which is to fetch a ball., but only for a short time for now. YHSSPCA Volunteer of the Month Cheryl Licari, August 2024

Every month we highlight our incredible volunteers who donate their time and good hearts to YOUR Humane Society SPCA. We are truly fortunate to team up with the best people who help our shelter pets find forever homes. This month, we congratulate our August 2024 Volunteer of the Month, Cheryl Licari!

As the dog days of summer continue, our team of lifesavers endure it because they know what an impact their participation has in lifesaving of precious deserving pets. Without people like Cheryl, we would not be able to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome the animals who land in our care. We are privileged to have many transplants from across our country who make Florida their next home and take time in their retirement to help in their new community. Cheryl, once a Detroit suburbanite who relocated here, is one of those compassionate community-driven people.

Cheryl’s memories of her youth are filled with cherished high-energy dogs such as German Shepherds, St. Bernards, many active hunting dog breeds plus many lucky cats and kittens. When she and her husband Ken moved to Florida though, they had no pets. Through the grapevine, Cheryl repeatedly heard about our well-regarded shelter so she came to learn more about us and she was convinced that this would be a great place to make a positive impact. Cheryl explained “I have always loved animals and since our local HSSPCA is a no-kill shelter, it seemed like the right choice.”

After volunteering for six months, Cheryl also made a difference in a little dog’s life by adopting Button, a sweet cuddly Maltese, who was being fostered by one of our volunteers and was waiting for its own loving family. While Cheryl and all our volunteers are often asked “how I can walk dogs and not want to take them home. Playing with them, hugging them, and giving them love is a win-win for both of us.” Additionally, she explains how our team of volunteers work together to make the most for the animals during each visit. “The other walkers who are there on the same shift as me, have become good teammates. We share ideas and suggestions and help each other. Each staff member is friendly and accommodating and there to help if needed.”

Memorable experiences are shared by many shelter volunteers and staff who are involved directly with their care Cheryl shared that “one of the most memorable experiences for me since I’ve been there is fostering three puppies, part of a litter. I had never fostered before and having three puppies was a lot of work but also very fulfilling knowing that I had an impact on their early development. I tried not getting attached but of course I did.” Cheryl demonstrated how important volunteer foster homes are, whether for vulnerable young animals, a more fragile senior pet who needs time to adjust or one who is recovering medically. Foster homes allow these animals a safe space to heal and destress along with opening the limited space at the shelter for animals who may require the skilled care and supervision of staff. Foster home volunteers also act as ambassadors who promote these pets across their own social circles, helping network them to potential adopters. Another win-win as Cheryl described how she helped two of the three puppies in her care. “Before I took them back to the shelter to be fixed so they could be adopted, I took pictures of them and posted them on Facebook that they would be adoptable soon. I know that at least two were adopted that way. One I still get to see pictures of since I know the owner.”

Many of YOUR Humane Society SPCA volunteers show their support in other areas and Cheryl is one of those who goes the extra mile. Over the years, she has been to several fundraising and adoption events as a volunteer or as an attendee. She shared that she “purchased some of our amazing T-shirts or paintings that the dogs participated in making. There are also fundraisers like the fashion show that I attended. There are so many ways to help this organization and help these animals to find their fur-ever homes.”

We are so grateful for our volunteers who give of themselves to care for our adoptable cats and dogs, and we are proud to highlight Cheryl Licari as our Volunteer of the Month for August 2024. Congratulations! We thank you for your hard work, dedication, and the support you give the animals to find happy futures with families they can call their own.
