Out of an abundance of caution for our pet families as well as our team members, our general practices will be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. Our emergency clinic will be closed on Wednesday and will be open Thursday night. To ensure your family receives the care it needs, any changes will communicated as soon as possible. If you are in need of immediate assistance while we are closed, please call Veterinary Healthcare Associates at (863) 324-3340. To help you prepare, here are 5 tips to ensure you are ready for the storm: - Perishable food? A cooler will keep your pets’ food fresh even if the power goes out - Ensure your pets have a safe space to remain during the storm and have a carrier on hand just in case - Comfort items like toys and treats are a great de-stressor in the event that your pet gets anxious during the storm - Don’t forget to include your pet in your evacuation plan. Locate your pet-friendly evacuation center so you can keep your family together in the event that you need to leave your home - Create a list. A checklist of important items like medications and food can make all the difference when you need to think quickly Stay safe, and we look forward to serving you and your family again soon! 🐾 #hurricaneian #petsafety #veterinarycare #floridasafety #centralflorida

We all love spending the long, sunny days of summer outdoors with our furry companions, but being overeager in hot weather can spell danger. To prevent your pet from overheating, take these simple precautions when spending time outdoors this summer: * Visit your local vet for a spring or early-summer checkup. This is also a good time to check for heartworms. * Pets can get dehydrated quickly while enjoying the summer sun. Be sure to give them plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. * Make sure your pets have a shady place to get out of the sun and be careful not to over-exercise them. Keep them indoors when it’s extremely hot. * Know the symptoms of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, mild weakness, stupor, or even collapse. Symptoms can also include seizures, bloody diarrhea, and vomit along with an elevated body temperature of over 104 degrees. * Never leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Not only can it lead to fatal heat stroke, but it is also illegal in several states! * Contrary to popular belief, not all dogs are good swimmers. Introduce your pets to water gradually and make sure they wear flotation devices when on boats. Rinse your dog off after swimming to remove chlorine or salt from his fur, and try to keep your dog from drinking pool water, which contains chlorine and other chemicals. * Remember that food and drinks commonly found at barbeques can be poisonous to pets. Keep alcoholic beverages away from animals, as they can cause intoxication, depression, and comas. Similarly, remember that the snacks enjoyed by your human friends may not be the best treat for your pet. Looking for more ways to keep your four-legged friend safe this summer fun? Schedule your pet’s Summer check-up at one of our locations to learn more about the dangers your pets may face as things heat up this summer. ☀️
