✨Peonies✨These lovely flowers are a prized possession in any garden, thriving with minimal care and capable of blooming for decades or even centuries. Despite their brief season, the flowers are elegant, fragrant and visually stunning. Most individuals plant peonies in the spring, but the ideal planting time is actually in the fall, from September to December. This allows the plant to develop a strong root system, crucial for maintaining optimal health. You can plant in the spring however it can lead to difficulties in root establishment, resulting in plant stress and reduced blooming. Additionally, peonies are deer-resistant, allowing gardeners to cultivate these beautiful flowers without worrying about deer damage.

Sunflowers🌻 These vibrant blooms exhibit bright and cheerful characteristics. They serve as a symbol of happiness, positivity, and friendship, but it is lesser-known that sunflowers possess a remarkable ability. Sunflowers are hyperaccumulators, meaning they can absorb toxins and heavy metals into their tissue. Notably, fields of sunflowers were planted around Chernobyl and Fukushima to aid in the cleanup of radiation. Furthermore, they are also planted in areas with high lead levels in the soil. Gives you even more reason to love this simple flower.

Let’s discuss roses. While I am not a rose expert by any means, I have acquired knowledge on maintaining their health in our rugged climate, primarily through proper planting techniques. When planting a rose, it is essential to position the crown, where new canes emerge, 4-6 inches below the soil surface. I typically plant 6 inches or more below the surface to safeguard against freezing temperatures. Additionally, applying a layer of leaf mulch during winter provides protection for the rose, and as the leaves decompose, they create a rich, healthy soil environment – a highly beneficial outcome. I have successfully cultivated several David Austin roses using this method. This straightforward approach allows my roses to thrive with minimal maintenance.

Did you know that you can plant your poppy seeds in the fall? September through November is a great time to sprinkle your seeds on top of the soil where you’d like them to come up. Poppies are great because they need light to germinate, so you don’t need to bury them. They will start to emerge in early spring, and there are many varieties to choose from. If you plant your poppies in the spring, make sure you leave them in the fridge or freezer for a couple of weeks before planting. The cold will help them germinate.

Just fyi, I scattered poppy seeds today and can’t wait to see them in the spring 🌸

Not only do we cultivate flowers on the farm, but we also grow and sell raspberries. This year, we experienced a remarkable bumper crop, enabling me to freeze a substantial quantity for jam production this winter. Raspberry jam is one of my favorite gifts to present to family and friends during the holiday season. Its bright and refreshing flavor profile is essentially summer in a jar. Next season, look for our fresh raspberries in the farm stand. The jam also pairs well with locally crafted cards from .smith.art making for a thoughtful gift.

My favorite part of the day is my morning walks through the gardens. We are going to have a gorgeous tulip crop this year and I love checking the perennial flowers that are starting to emerge from the ground. I can’t forget to watch my step as Pickles and Parsley are always underfoot as they join me on my walks. I’m going to collect chicken and duck eggs before checking all the plants in the tunnels and the seedling room. Hey folks, sorry I’ve been MIA for the last couple days, but we are busy busy here at Cranky Goose. Even though it’s early, it feels like spring is in full swing and we’ve been planting out the tunnels, starting even more seeds and adding a third tunnel to the front garden! This summer we are going to be putting on quite the show with even more flowers and some new varieties 💐 I also want to thank our good friends @ashley.r.thompson for helping us set up the new tunnel.
