FAQ Friday: Is mass timber as strong as concrete? How does Mass Timber compare to concrete?

Answer: Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a building material that has several advantages over concrete masonry units (CMU), including:

Strength: CLT is as strong as concrete but is five times lighter. It's also resistant to compression, making it suitable for multi-story buildings.

Speed: CLT panels can be prefabricated offsite and installed quickly. For example, in one project, crews installed 10,000 sq ft of building surface in one day using CLT.

Fire resistance: CLT has outperformed concrete and steel in fire tests.
