Thanksgiving Survival Mindset

Thanksgiving is coming and you're already stressed about your dog's behavior.
But what if we shifted the goal?

Instead of "my dog needs to be perfect," what if it was "we all need to get through this peacefully"?

Perfect is exhausting. Peace is achievable.

Peace might look like your dog in another room and that's OKAY. Using management instead of training. Accepting "good enough." Choosing calm over performance.

Your relatives might not understand. They might make comments.

But you know what? Your dog's emotional wellbeing matters more than anyone's opinion.

This Thanksgiving, give yourself permission to do whatever keeps everyone safe and relatively calm.

That's success. Full stop.

Comment "PEACE" if you're lowering the bar and raising the calm this year.

🌿✨ Sniffari stroll with Luna! ✨🌿

Today’s adventure was all about exploring, sniffing, and soaking up every little scent the world had to offer. And you know what? Letting your dog sniff on walks is so wise — it gives them mental enrichment, reduces stress, and turns a simple outing into a full sensory experience. Luna absolutely lights up when she gets to lead with her nose!

🐾 A dog who gets to sniff is a dog whose needs are being met — and that’s when the magic happens. 💛

👉 Want your pup to enjoy enriching, Fear-Free walks too? Let’s chat!💚🐾

Charlie and I go way back with his leash-manner training, so kicking off our new routine of a couple reinforcement walks each week felt extra special today. 🐾💛

And he rocked it.

Loose leash, checking in, and moving through distractions like the smart, steady boy he is. Consistency really does pay off—and I’m so proud of how far he’s come!

Ready to help your dog learn (or brush up on) their leash manners, too? Let’s make your walks calmer, kinder, and more enjoyable for everyone.

🌤️ Morning stroll with my best little buddy, Bogey! 🐕‍🦺
He trotted along with his signature pep in his step, stopping for plenty of sniff breaks to check his pee-mail and soak up all the good morning scents. Sniffing is such an important part of a dog’s mental wellness, and Bogey takes that job very seriously. 🐾👃💛

Here’s to slow, joyful starts and happy pups. 🩵🐶

NILIF: NOTHING IN LIFE IS FREE

For those of you who may not have heard of this,
NILIF stands for "Nothing In Life Is Free". When following the NILIF protocol, the human controls all resources, and the dog, to the nth degree. This is based on the outdated and debunked dominance theory, rank reduction, pack leader way of thinking, which should have died a death a long time ago. Sadly, because of a lack of regulation in the dog training industry, dominance theory continues to be perpetuated, and has led to an increase in the use of punishment and aversive handling methods. A prime example of this is the ‘alpha roll,’ where the dog is physically forced into submission because the human believes that he needs to “be the boss”.

Here are some statements taken from the following document, which outlines how and why NILIF should be implemented: Microsoft Word - NILIFCampCanine.doc (campcaninect.com)

“N.I.L.I.F stands for ‘Nothing in life is free’. This means exactly what it says. As humans, we have to work for what we want and so should our four legged companions.”

“N.I.L.I.F………. creates a hierarchy within the house-hold and helps to assign the dog its place in the family. It helps to maintain order, and reduces conflict, and promotes cooperation among pack members.”

“Eventually, the dog will realize that it must obey your command to get what it wants.”

“ ‘Nothing in life is free’ communicates to the dog that the human is the top dog in its pack and that the human is in control.”

“Not all but some dogs may challenge their owners for dominance.”

“……… children (aged eight and over) should also learn and practice ‘nothing in life is free’ with the dog. So they too, are seen higher in the hierarchy chain over the dog.”

Unfortunately, there are trainers out there who still promote NILIF, with some even believing that the NILIF protocol can be implemented as part of a force-free approach to dog training. However, having seen first hand the emotional and psychological harm this can cause, I put forward in this blog why I believe there is no place for NILIF in this day and age, and why it deserves to be banished to the dark ages of dog training:

Senior cats still have a strong desire to explore, hunt, and connect; they just express it differently than they once did.

Play for older cats isn’t about speed — it’s about engagement, comfort, and connection. Gentle, thoughtful play helps maintain mobility, mental sharpness, and emotional well-being.

Ideas for Playing With a Geriatric Cat:

Keep it low-impact: Choose soft toys or lightweight wands that encourage swatting or light pouncing. Avoid jumping or quick turns that may strain joints.

Encourage natural movements: Slow, creeping motions with toys can mimic prey that’s easy to “catch,” allowing your cat to feel successful without frustration.

Use comfortable surfaces: Play on rugs, blankets, or bedding to cushion movement and support arthritic joints.

Short and sweet sessions: A few minutes of interactive play once or twice a day can keep your cat mentally and physically active without exhaustion.

Not much action: Engaged watching, a paw stretching out, or slow swat may not look like much — but to your cat, it’s meaningful engagement and movement.
